Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
On another forum I'm on, there's a member who repeatedly warns expectant parents about a possible link between a high number of ultrasounds and autism. This poster had 5 ultrasounds (which, IMO, is not even THAT many!) and regrets it now that her son has autism. I kind of think she's just looking for something to blame but who knows (I believe it's genetic since the child's father fully admits that he's likely on the spectrum!).
So basically, I'm just wondering if anyone else has heard of this link and if so, what do you know about it?
Thanks.

Never heard about this. I had 10+ sonograms and Andrew (knock on wood) is just fine.

Unfortunately I think these moms are looking for something to blame it on There is no proven medical research to back her....

Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
5 is on the low side, IMO. Every parent of a child without autism that I know has had 5 or more ultrasounds. If she wants to make a correlation, it would be that LESS ultrasounds cause autism.... except for the fact that that is easily disproved as well. While I feel really bad for parents of children with autism, I don't like seeing random fingers pointing in any possible direction. It takes away from real research for a cure/solution. If this rumor starts to spread, researchers will be redirected to looking at ultrasounds, and taken away from other solutions.

Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
while I haven't heard of any links to autism or any other disease/developmental condition, I did read articles when i was pregnant basically saying that they aren't sure how good it is for the baby to be exposed to the waves over and over from dopplers & ultrasounds. They even went further to say they *thought* it bothered the babies b/c during doppler/ultrasound, the babies try and move away from the waves. I have no idea if any of this is true- but I did try to minimize the exposure- I didn't rent a doppler, etc.... and only had the ultrasounds that doc prescribed- nothing 4-d at special sonogram boutique, etc. I had GD too, but I only had 4 sonograms total- 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 20 weeks and 36 weeks in hospital b/c I went early & they needed to check her lungs.

Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
She has a point in that ultrasounds have never been proven safe for developing fetuses, although they are widely used. There was a study that came out when I was preggo with DS questioning the safety of ultrasounds, although I don' think there was any mentoin of autism. Just remember x-rays were once widely used on pregnant women.
I tend to think it's a good idea to limit ultrasounds unless you have a real medical reason for them. I had 3 with DS (8 weeks, 12 weeks, 20 weeks) and I think I'll only have 2 with the next (12 weeks and 20 weeks) unless there are problems.

5 ultrascreens? Is this for high risk pregnancies or regular? In the UK we get 2.

No, I think it's fairly common here in the US to get several ultrasounds in a typical, healthy pregnancy. I think I had 5 probably, and had an easy pregnancy with no complications.
About the original topic: I would be interested in this other poster's research as well. I'm sure that when you are given a diagnosis for your child that breaks your heart, you try to analyze everything to find out the "cause"...I'd say that's human nature. But it's scary when people tell others their views as fact, because others are easily influenced and it could cause panic. Not saying this is what the other poster did on your other forum, just saying.

It depends on the dr. My friend had 2 her entire pregnancy. I had 7.
I believe the ultrasound theory more than vaccinations.

I only had 3-8 week, 12 week and 20 week. I think it varies from dr to dr.
As far as any link; I really don't know but I have to say that I find it odd that this woman is pointing fingers at ultrasounds when a much more likely source (genetics) is staring her right in the face.

Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
I actually did hear this from someone who's child has autism also and they kept telling me not to have to many ultrasounds. I had a whole bunch being that I worked in radiology at the time and I wanted to constantly sneak a peek. There is only a small amount of research about it. I am not worried.

Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
i was only scheduled to have 3, but they detected low amniotic fluid when i was 36 weeks and got about 5 in the last 4 weeks of my pregnancy.
I was under the impression that they didn't know how much the ultrasound waves bothered them, i never heard anything about autism.

Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
My doctor (Dr. Gomes) gave a sono every single time I visited. I must have had more than 30 for each of my boys. Knock on wood, they are both fine.
We as moms are looking for that magic "thing" that causes autism. So that once we know the "cause" we can end autism. I wish it were that easy.

I think it depends on your dr. I had 2 one at 10 weeks and one at 20. My SIL had one every visit and there was no GD or high risk involved. While it is so exciting to see your little one, I have always questioned the safety of Ultrasounds myself. I have never heard of anything linking Autism to Ultrasounds. If it isn't necessary I would choose to keep them to a minimum.

Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
my nephew as autism. parents need someone or something to blame. Vaccines, food dye, utrasounds, drugs given during pregnancy etc... Until we have real proof everything is a guess. It is mainly parents looking to "blame" something/someone. If it turns out to be genetic (which I believe it will) that is a lot harder to accept.

Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
I had at least 20 ultrasounds throughout my pregancy since I was high risk and my boys shared the same placenta. Honestly, i don't believe this for a minute. I felt much better with the doctors checking on them to make sure nothing was going wrong.
People should be careful about what they say. It makes me nervous because there is no research backing this up and it might make people stop getting ultrasounds, which can detect issues that need immediate care.
For my boys it was a ultrasound at 36 weeks that showed there was an issue arising and they needed to come out.

Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
I had about 10 ultrasounds done b/c of various issues and DS is not showing any signs of autism and is advanced in most areas.
While I think anyone should try and limit the amount of ultrasounds they get, I dont know that I would link ultrasounds to autism. It doesnt sound like a rational theory. I would be more concerned of ultrasounds causing physical deformities like x-rays.
ETA: I do not think that ultrasounds are linked to physical deformities...just trying to say it would make more sense than ultrasounds being linked to autism.

Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
My doctor's office believes in this theory as well and limited all my Ultrasounds. I had maybe 2 U/S throughout both pregnancies. Both my kids are healthy. I also had easy pregnancies.
Now, my friend had an U/S practically everytime she went to see the dr. I guess it does depend on the individual dr.
