Longshot: Anyone familiar with the area by Monroe, NY?

Have never lived there but i did go to college with about 10 people from this town. They all grew up to do fairly well and were all around good kids. They also frequented the city a lot since its not too far away.

My DH grew up around there, and still has friends in the area. PM with specific questions.

Re: Longshot: Anyone familiar with the area by Monroe, NY?

I would stay away from Monroe. It borders Kiryas Joel and they have a lot of Hasidics moving into Monroe causing the property taxes to go up drastically. Monroe actually recently annexed over 160 acres of land to Kiryas Joel so they can expand. We looked at a house there about 3 years ago and ended up staying down in Rockland County for this very reason. It's a big issue up there and a lot of people are moving out of the town because of it.

Yes, we are following this and its a great concern to us. I am hoping for an amicable outcome within the next year but if not we will be looking in the surrounding areas such as Chester, Blooming Grove.

The issue isn't really just the annex...it's more just the fact that because they border that area, they will always move into it. When we looked there years ago there were several Hasidic families already living on the street we were looking at...which is why the owners were selling. The more of them that move in, the more taxes you will pay because they don't pay taxes.

I only warn about it so much because we bought down in New City and we border Monsey/Wesley Hills which also has a huge Hasidic population and we are experiencing a very similar epidemic in North New City. It's a major major issue here and we see them moving into our neighborhoods and suddenly there are like 20 of them living in one house, not paying taxes, and making an absolute MESS of the neighborhoods.

My brother and SIL were just looking at Chester and were advised by several people who live there that the same thing is happening in that town as well.

I have heard good things about Goshen, Walden, and Middletown. I believe they are a little further North, but they have decent school districts and are located far enough from Kiryas Joel that they are not experiencing any overflow. I'm also a big fan of Sugarloaf and Warwick. DH and I would have moved there in a heartbeat if I was able to relocate my job.

In the Hasidic community it is seen as a (not sure of the word but will find something) "commandment" "jewish law" "edict" "duty" to have Jewish children. So you will see all these family's with a LOT of kids because you need to make more Jewish children.

So you will see a LOT of people crammed into one house.

Curious, why don't any of them pay taxes?

They claim their homes as places of worship in order to avoid paying property taxes. Many of them are also on some form of welfare or Medicare. There was a huge scandal just a few years ago where it was uncovered that almost the entire Kiryas Joel community was involved in tax fraud. Literally, close to 30,000 Hasidics were involved in it. It's a current investigation going on right now in Rockland County with the Hasidic community in New Square/Monsey/Spring Valley.

It's also a very big issue with voting in local elections as the Hasidic community is known to group vote. The entire community votes as a whole. So, in Kiryas Joel's case, that's 30,000 residents voting for 1 particular person. Which is why in Monroe they have successfully elected whichever candidate has been willing to negotiate with them. Which is exactly why the annex is even happening right now. During election time in Rockland county there have been similar scandals. It's honestly a sad mess.

My friends live in Monroe and have a beautiful house. But they're stressed and thinking of selling. Their house value is dropping by the day.

The majority (if not all) males in the Hasidic community are ordained as a Rabbi, so they are able to claim the property either as a temple or synagogue or as a Rabbi residence. They also claim their homes as private Yeshiva schools and as student residences or dormitories. All of which are tax exempt properties.

My concern is what happens if these residents keep moving into homes in the area. Who is making up the cost in taxes? How can this be allowed if it can cause major financial detriment to a community? I wonder if there is some sort of cap of how many can claim tax exemptions in a particular town for this reason.

Unfortunately, I don't believe there is a cap. Don't get me wrong, residents of the towns that this is happening in are up in arms about it, but they've been pretty unsuccessful about doing anything about it. And when elected officials or anyone else for that matter tries to do anything, they get thrown into the fire for anti-Semitism. Not to mention, again, since the population votes as a whole, and they make up a large population of the county, any politician would be stupid to do anything to stir the pot. The problem is that the Hasidics are getting elected to the school boards, the town councils, the County Legislative Boards...they're acquiring more land, buying out more buildings, etc.

The question of who is making up for the taxes...that would be the residents. Taxes in towns that the Hasidics live or border tend to have very high taxes comparably to other towns nearby. And they have re-assessments often and the taxes continue to rise. Not to mention that your property value is going to decrease significantly. Monroe is a perfect example. Property values are plummeting right now (well, really they have been for the last 5+ years as Kiryas Joel has slowly been trickling into Monroe Woodbury). The same holds true with areas of Suffern and Pomona where they are seeing an influx of Hasidim.

Don't forget about the Ramapo school district and the mess there (Monsey). I grew up in Rockland so I'm familiar with the issues. There have been so many budget cuts in the Ramapo school district because of the Hasidic control of the school district. They've cut just about every program in the district. I didn't realize that was going on in Monroe now too.
