My heart is aching for you. I know these types of details all too well and can almost feel this conversation as if it's happening to me. I'm so sorry they didn't give you at least the idea of both sides. I know what you mean when you say the doc was almost happy to be right. Again I'm so sorry and still think the promising rising beta wouldn't turn into something bad so quickly. I hope you get a good beta tomorrow and an awesome sono on Monday!Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm so sorry you're going through this.

It really could go either way at this point, and I think the dr just doesn't want to give you false hope. In his mind, it's probably better for you to be pleasantly surprised if it works out, than to have been given false hope if it goes the other way.

I know it's hard, but when I went through all this I appreciated hearing the truth, not sugar coated. As for not having anyone on staff for a sono? That sounds weird. Don't women have to come in for monitoring on the weekends? Perhaps this just isn't the right fit for you with this practice? Just give it a few more days and see what happens before you make any decisions.

Here is the thing though I did not want him to sugar coat but he went right for the bad things not once said well lets wait and see. I would expect some hope not zero. I have been through this, it is my 4th transfer thank god I have beautiful twin girls but I had 2 failed transfer before them and I know the statistics and know the odds here but to not have the doctor have any hope it sucks. I have brown blood with minimal. I wish I never called at all.

I said that to the nurse about monitoring and she didn't really answer me. I have had a great experience here so far and my nurse I normally deal with has been a pleasure but this is just crazy to me.

Im sorry they are being dbags..I know they dont want to be too positive but they could be a little nicer.

when the nurse at RMA called with my first beta and said it was 26 and obviously low, but she was very kind..she said it was low, but it was early and that they will support a pregnancy until they are told not to. your nurses and dr's there could be a tad more gentle, I think.

i would maybe consider finding a new practice going forward. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I decided to skip the beta tomorrow. They are over a half an hour away since the local office is closed over the weekend. I just do not have it in me to go for just a beta test. Thank you though.

Low Beta but rising UPDATE 2 10/30/2015

I'm sorry you are going through this. I've been there so I know where you are coming from. I had bleeding with both pregnancies, both started out with spotting and then turned heavy, in my case I had subchorionic hematomas each time. The first time I had zero cramping, the second time I cramped but I have two little ones. Both time my spotting stared the same time as where you are now. Not saying this is what is going on but just throwing out another reason why you could be spotting. Are you taking progesterone in shot form or suppositories? When I did suppositories i also spotted, once I switched to the shots I didn't have that issue any longer. Praying it's just some old blood and your beta keeps rising. Good luck Monday!

sorry to hear about your experience. Going through this process is such an emotional rollercoaster. We all want to wish for the best up until the very end. So hearing only the negative outcomes from the RE definitely hurts. Don't be satisfied with a BFN until AF is back for sure.

wishing you all the best

I agree with this. I had really low betas after my first IVF. But they kept doubling, trippling until my 4th or 5th beta. I started bleeding pretty badly and was concerned and my RE at the time kept telling me blood in a pregnancy is normal. I knew that the amount of bleeding I was having was NOT ok and I was getting so frustrated that they weren't being realistic with me.

Also, she's right about not seeing anything on a sono. I think you have to have at least a beta of 1000 to see something. I know it's easier said than done but hang in there and hopefully you have good news on Monday at your sono.

I'm so sorry. I've been there and it didn't turn out well. It's so agonizing going through what you're going through right now. But remember, if the pregnancy is healthy, it will continue no matter what the doctor says or doesn't say.

In my case, my first beta was also a 10 and doubled or quadrupled every 2 days but never really went anywhere. I spotted every day even on the progesterone. At 22 dpo, 5 weeks pregnant, my beta was 200 even though it should have been in the many-thousands. In my case, every nurse and doctor I spoke to insisted on keeping me on the progesterone so I wouldn't get my period. They kept saying they'd "seen stranger things." I had to keep going for blood tests until I was 6 and a half weeks pregnant, and every two days I'd get a phone call with a terrible (but doubling) beta and beg to stop the progesterone but they wouldn't let me. I actually wish my doctor had been more like yours.

I really am sorry for what you're going through. I wish you the best.

Low Beta but rising UPDATE 2 10/30/2015

I'm sorry you're going through this.

You may not like my response but coming to you as a nurse (former labor and delivery now working in Maternal Fetal Medicine) most doctors wouldn't want to tell you something if they don't honestly believe it based on what they see.

At 12dp5dt a beta of 10; realistically doesn't look good. He/she doesn't want to give you false hope. Nothing will show on a sonogram until your beta is 1000. If it was only 173 2 or 3 days ago they won't be able to see anything.

I hope things work out for you.

It's really sucky that they won't even do a sono on you and I agree maybe find a new practice.

With my last m/c my numbers started out very low.

15 at 9dp5dt

67?? at 11dp5dt

180?? at 13dp5dt

RMA told me the numbers were low but it could go either way. They were very compassionate and told me to remain cautiously optimistic even when I started bleeding before my first sono at 5w4d.
In my heart I knew it wasn't viable but of course you hold on to hope. When I went in for my sono all we saw was a sac and that day my beta was only 380ish so I knew it didn't look good but we were able to see something on the monitor even with that low beta. I hope they get you in to do a sono today.

Re: Low Beta but rising UPDATE 2 10/30/2015

Your beta started low but the important factor is how it's increasing and doubling. That's what most REs pay attention to, especially with IVF pregnancies bc they implant at a different rate than natural pregnancies.

That being said,
I bled with both pregnancies, most significantly with my DD that was born this year. My current RE refused to see me when I started bleeding so I panicked and called my old RE who does not have a particularly good rep in this forum. They immediately fit me in to do an emergency beta and sono and even when they had issues finding the sac, they stayed positive for me, staff and Dr. That is super important to me bc IVF, infertility and repeat miscarriage is so stressful and emotionally draining. You NEED positive people around you bc we will always be doubting and panicking over something. I needed them to be reassuring for my sanity unless it was definitely over. I do understand the blunt Dr approach but I particularly needed the "we will stay positive until we know things are over" approach.
In any case, I formed a subchronic hematoma (sp?) which is a blood clot where the implantation happened. Majority of the time it dissolves but can cause issues so should be diagnosed so you can stay off your feet to rest. I bled and spotted for almost 2 weeks and it was terrifying but they monitored me constantly until it dissolved. I did not have IVF for that pregnancy but SCH are common with IVF implantation. I'm praying that all is okay with your little one! Stay positive and remember it's not over til it's over and sounds like you have a little fighter over there!

Low Beta but rising UPDATE 2 10/30/2015

Here is the update. I was bleeding all weekend. Not too heavy but enough. I knew it was over. I went to the Dr. yesterday and he can tell where it implanted but didn't see much. He did a repeat BETA. I just got the call and it went down to 53. I will wait and do another transfer next month I guess. Whenever my period decides to show up. Thank you for all the support.
