MAC computer users
Hi,
I work off a dell laptop and need to replace it. The comfortable side of me says just get a new dell but the more daring side of me says get a mac and see what all the hype is about.
My job requires lots of heavy emailing and office applications - word and excel. Do these applications come already loaded onto a mac? Do they operate and look the same way as they do on the PC - I know dumb question but thought I would ask.
This will be a work expense so I wont be paying for it.
Should I take a walk on the wild side or stick to my pc?
TIA

Re: MAC computer users
Get the MAC!
I went from a Dell PC to a MAC about five years ago and I'd never go back—not even if the PC was free!
A MAC will operate a little differently than a PC (you'll get used to it and you'll like it better). You will have to pay extra for Excel and Word. So worth it!

Re: MAC computer users
run, do not walk, and get a mac.
they have microsoft office.. and aside from the fact that the short cuts are slightly different- it's pretty much the same.
The OS is very easy to use, much more intuitive (I think)...

Plus if you take your laptop to an apple store they will transfer all of your old files to your new Mac

Re: MAC computer users
instead of taking the above advice of buying out right, you should test drive a Mac simply by going to a Apple store and trying it for yourself. You should taken it one step futher and make an appointment with a Mac Genuis and he/she will answer all your questions.

Re: MAC computer users
I think on the new MAC's you can log in on OS X OR windows. You should ask about that.
Basically, not only can a MAC be a MAC but can load up to look EXACTLY like a PC desktop. Best of both worlds.

Re: MAC computer users
ok, I'll be the counterpoint to this thread.
I dislike Macs intensely. frankly, it limits you on so many fronts. most of the world and therefore most specialized software is PC. if you're in Mac land, you're forced to use your 'virtual PC' which simply doesn't work as claimed. Most software is written for PC, and if a mac version is made, it's an awkward afterthought.
I work in a lab, and oddly, there are some scientists are mac-lovers, dispite the fact that they can't run 3/4 of the software we need at work. (They always own a second computer to do all PC applications). It's also a PIA becuase the files that are supposedly 'easily converted and read' between mac and PC are NOT. Images in word are giant red X's, graphs are messed up.... it's just
worst part about it is that mac computers that are used beyond light emailing always ended up crashing. I can't tell you how many times those machines were pushed on a cart to the computer center for an attempted recussitation. the average age of death was about 2 years old for macs in our lab. PCs lasted about 4 years.
I'll only give them props for one thing... they sure are pretty! But no substance from my experience....
(The laptops loved the most by my co-workers are all vaios I even do intensive things like neuroimaging analysis, and my 2 year old vaio handles it w/o a problem.... EVER)

Like I said, I don't think this is true anymore as now you can boot up a MAC as an OSx Operating system or a Windows so the "virtual PC" thing may not apply anymore.
I personally haven't done it because I have no use for any PC applications.
Although I do miss minesweeper.

Boot Camp - you can boot into windows OS on the mac.
My rebuttal to this always is - why bother spending the extra money for a mac laptop if 50% of the time you're going to be booted into windows?
I see no advantage of the mac that's worth the price difference, unless you are going to be doing heavy duty graphics or video editing.

oh you don't even know the 1/2 of it! one time, I was looking for my dissertation advisor... his office had large windows and was 2 floors above the main building entrance. I walked into his office, he wasn't there, I noticed the desk was EMPTY (but had some crumpled papers and wires flung around), I looked out the window and literally SAW him pushing the thing on a cart
sorry to laugh, but it WAS his 3rd mac while I was in his lab, and I was only there 4.5 years.....

Once you go Mac, you never go bac.
I know I spelled it wrong. Heheheh!
No, seriously. I LOVE my Mac. I run windows in a parallel program and just keep it running on one of my workspaces.

With parallels yo u can run windows all the time in one of your workspaces and you don't even need to ever reboot. It's so great. I use the mac programs most of the time but some of my analysis software is windows, so I use my 4th workspace for windows only.
ETA: Parallels is a program that you buy separately so you can run something other than Mac OS.

Yes, I've used Parallels in the past also. I put it under the same category as Boot Camp. If you're going to be spending half the time in the windows environment on your mac - why bother with the mac.
There are a couple of people in my office who are CONSTANTLY use Parallels on their Mac - but MUST have their Mac. They use NO mac applications. It just doesnt make sense except they want to be 'different' and 'cool'.

Re: MAC computer users
I have a MAC now and I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!! WE bought a brand new HP back in August 2006. We had on and of problems with it for about 6 months (constantly getting the blue scree, etc) Had the Geek Squad come down and they completely had to do a System Restore (on a computer that was only 6months old and was only used for light emailing and web surfing) And I had to pay for that type of service, it wasnt covered in the warranty for some reason???LAst September same problem again. Now the computer is 1 year and 1 day old. I call up HP and i am out of the warranty range (warantee was for 1 yr) We trouble shoot over the phone for about 2 weeks, wind up shipping the computer to HP, (over 300 to repair), get it back and guess what.....SAME PROBLEM!! I get ont he phone, we go thru the whole trouble shooting again and they advise me to ship it back again (now remember we just got it back from them stating the problem was fixed). I literally was in tears bc #1 it was 13 months old and #2 I was in my second to last semester of grad school, and had to get my thesis in!!!! So my DH felt sooo bad for me and went out and bought me a MAC based upon the advice from his IT department at his job and I LOVE IT! Never had a problem !!1 I hated the Customer Service at HP!!!! So far there has not been one thing that i have not been able to do with my MAC that I could have done with my PC. And it looks great too!

Re: MAC computer users
I have a Mac and I LOVE it. I don't use virtual PC or bootcamp or any Windows software. I have seen 2 disadvantages
1) My work business systems are not mac friendly, so for working from home I need a PC
2) Many computer games come out later for mac.

Re: MAC computer users
if you are a regular home user- and using email, microsoft word, powerpoint, you'll be fine. if you are a huge gamer, you'll obviously want a pc as the games do come out earlier. If you do a lot of work with photos and movie clips, you'll like mac b/c the programs are very easy to grasp. I have never had a problem w/ my mac crashing. also- if you are a home user, you'll have virtually no problem w/ viruses. I have (knock on wood) had my laptop for almost 4 years now and haven't had a problem w/ it in terms of crashing, getting a bug, etc. In this time my dad has had to get 3 different PCs due to infections of viruses, etc. The only thing i've done to my computer is up the memory- laptops have two memory slots- b/c I have an older model powerbook, my computer has the max memory allowed (1 gig in one slot, 512 in the next).
