Making chocolate (shaped) lollipops??
Has anyone ever made chocolate lollipops using shaped molds? Any insight or advice?
Is there a way to make the chocolate a specific color (like maybe using white chocolate with food coloring)?
I assume you have to use a special kind of chocolate, right? What kind?
If we want to make 50-100 lollipops, how many molds should we buy and how long before the event can we make them?
Thanks for ANY and all help!!!!!

It's not that difficult to do, but it is time consuming, especially if you're doing different colors.
You can make it easy on yourself and buy the chocolate in whatever color you want it. They sell the wafers in Michaels, AC Moore, or if you want to spend a little more for really delicious chocolate, go to The Chocolate Duck.
I've always just used one mold, which might be why it takes so long. But you put the chocolate in the mold, then let it harden in the fridge, and when it's done, pop it out and start over. You can do them 1-2 weeks before the event, I'd say.
If you want to do different colors, you can use a paintbrush to paint it into the mold, let it harden, and then pour the main chocolate color over it.

The best chocolate to use is Merckins. The wilton and the AC Moore brand just dont melt as well as merckin.
Merckin
If the mold is very detailed, I'd use a fine paintbrush to get the details. Usually the molds come with 4 cavities, I usually buy 3 or 4 mold trays, just to speed up the process. I usually make them about 5 days before the event.
Ohh, if you cant find the color you want merckins also sells its own candy food coloring.

Thanks for the responses!!!
So, I have literally never done anything like this before, so I'm sorry for the dumb questions...
So you buy the chocolate wafers... and then what? Put them in a pot on low heat and wait until they melt, then pour into the mold?
How long does it take to harden in the fridge? And then when you pop them out, do you leave them in the fridge? How do you store them until you put them in the baggies?

You have to melt them in a double boiler so they're not directly over the heat. Or you can buy a special chocolate melter, but it doesn't hold a lot. It doesn't take long to harden in the fridge, you can actually see when it's all done...the middle is the last to solidify. You can keep them out at room temperature once they're done.

Here you go...this should help
If this your first time, I'd practice beforehand so you can work out any kinks and figure it all out ahead of time.

what shape mold are you looking at? If you're a beginner I'd try to do something with 2 colors max. To melt the wafers you can use a double boiler or you can boil a little bit of water in a pot and put a glass bowl over it. Put the wafers in the bowl and keep mixing until their melted. It'll take about 20 minutes in the fridge but it depends on the size of the mold, some molds use a lot of chocolate. Once they're room temperature I put them in the baggies.

Have fun!! The best part of practicing is that you get to eat them after you practice!!!
