I tried those once - very good!
I definitely prefer homemade over boxed. Although I used to make the boxed alot because they were so quick and easy...then one day I made the mistake of making homemade for DH...now he refuses to EVER eat boxed again.

Homemade. Definitely. However, I've been known to use the boxed kind to make a quick potato soup.

Growing up I made my mom nuts b/c I would complain when she would make homemade potatoes - I never liked the lumps.
Now, I still enjoy the boxed (actually, we get the ones in a can) but, I do like homemade too. I know they aren't difficult to make, but they just take more time, and I don't like the "dirty" mashed potatoes with the skins on.
If I am having company, I make homemade.
Just DH and I, well, most of the time, the boxed works just fine.
ETA - and yes, I can tell the difference, but I don't think the fake kind tastes like the box (well, one time we bought a different brand and it totally did) but not the one we usually use.

Without a doubt, homemade. They are so easy to make and you can definitely taste the difference when they're not (homemade).

Yes - while reading the thread, I was trying to figure out a substance to relate boxed to!!! THAT'S IT!!
Although I will say in the 80's - No Frills Instant Mashed was not bad - nowhere close to Homemade, but I remember liking them. I don't know how it got worse in 20 years!

definitely homemade, but I think the instant ones don't taste so bad. they are certainly easier to make when time is short.
