Masks in school

My district put out their plan and showed how the rooms were stripped of everything non essential so they can fit the desks 6 feet apart. I was hoping that meant the kids would NOT need to wear masks when sitting at their desks for instruction but it seems they still will. They will get "mask breaks", whatever that means. Maybe every hour they get to take their mask off for 5 minutes? Who knows.

What is everyone's stance on masks all day even when the 6 feet rule is in effect? I thought it was one or the other?

I think it’s unrealistic and I feel bad for the kids.

Our district is doing the same thing - and I thought the same thing you did. I was under the impression masks were not needed during instruction, only in busses, bathrooms and hallways.

I'm not anti-mask but, I don't feel that they need them when they are 6ft apart in a classroom.

I also feel like they are going to be more of a distraction than anything.

Masks in school

My district is not having desks 6 ft feet apart but arranged all classrooms with separate desks in rows, plexiglass dividers, and kids have to wear masks. This is for a Pre-kindergarten to 2nd grade school. I feel like I’m the only parent okay with my kid wearing a mask for most of the day. Parents are so sad about it. I’m just relieved that they are able to plan for somewhat regular in person learning. Fingers crossed that the plan is approved.

Masks in school

Our district is not requiring masks when students are in their seat and 6 feet apart from others. However, our super did say word is that the Dept of Ed is going to require students to wear them except when eating.

Re: Masks in school

Ours says this:

All individuals in school facilities and on school grounds must be prepared to put on a face covering if another person unexpectedly cannot socially distance. All students and staff members must wear cloth face coverings
• Whenever they are within 6 feet of someone
• In hallways
• In restrooms
• In other congregate settings, including buses

So to me that means if the desks are 6 feet apart and they are seated at them no masks.

But it's kind of clear as mud, so who knows.

Our actual plan said something similar... even though they stated differently in the Board meeting the other night.

However, if face coverings are to be worn by all individuals at all times, the School District will permit students to remove their face covering during meals, instruction, and for short breaks so long as they maintain appropriate social distance.

Well removing it during instruction would mean while seated at their desks, right? So that means no masks at desks.

And Wow how generous to allow them to remove their mask during meals. I would have thought they would have had to eat through the god damnn mask. Perhaps they can put them all on liquid diets and get them masks with straw holes. Chat Icon

Re: Masks in school

Our district says masks are mandatory for kids in grades 3 to 8. They are "recommended" for the younger set.

This may be the straw for my son as the most he has worn a mask is max 20 mins.

I would bet the majority of kids will have a really hard time wearing a mask for that duration.

Can you imagine the complaining? And rightly so..poor teachers!

Masks in school

I fully support it. Our district will have masks, six feet between desks, and plexiglass shields. We’re also having full days 5 days a week, and without the precautions I don’t think I would send her.

Our schools say masks are strongly encouraged but not required while kids are socially distanced. I hope they all wear them bc i really think we'll have big problems otherwise. Even if they don't wear them perfectly all the time it's still much better than not imo.

Did everyone see that sleep away camp where a week after they opened (and everyone came with a negative test) someone was positive and now over 40% of staff and kids are positive? I have such little hope schools will stay open at this point.

I'm okay with it too. We all feel bad for the kids but kids are way more adaptable than us big baby adults are. They will be fine. I told my kids its practice for when they become surgeons.Chat Icon

I just want them to be able to go back to school, safely.

I don't think it's any less safe than day camp. They were all tested before they got there and then weren't going back and forth to families.

I fully support masks. In all honesty is either close schools or be open and wear masks. I think currently with going back and a chance of infection rates climbing it’s better than just not opening. I think they should continue to re-evaluate as things change

Not a fan but we have to. I would rather them be in school 5 days a week with a mask than not in school. I think my kindergartner who has sensory issues mught have trouble getting used to it but he will adapt. We have adapted and our kids will too...

Masks in school

I am in full support of kids wearing masks. My 6 year old has been wearing one in camp for the past few weeks. They can only take the masks off when they eat and swim. She is outdoors half of the day playing in the sweltering heat. We practiced for short interval and worked with her on putting the mask on and taking it off by the ear loops.

I am not a parent so I can’t answer this, but how do you feel about your children’s’ teachers wearing masks?

I noticed in the neighborhood “moms” group on Facebook that parents are saying teachers should not wear them. Parents in my school asked my principal if teachers have to wear them, and stayed we shouldn’t. They want us in face shields only, which don’t do anything unless you have a mask.

They are saying their children should be allowed to see or faces.

I wouldn’t send my kids to school if the teachers were not wearing masks. I expect kids to be wearing them as well.

In my mind teachers are the most at risk so the kids need to wear masks for the teachers safety.

Yes, the way I see it is my mask helps not just me, but also helps to protect your child. So I’m wearing my mask.

I purchased five masks, one for each day so I can wash them, with the clear panel so my mouth is visible to my students. I so got a headset microphone because I am a soft speaker to begin with so there is no way my students who will be six feet apart can hear me with a mask on haha

This is awesome. I think the clear panel is such a great idea. For the little ones being able to see their teachers face and smile is so beneficial.

I posted this on parenting but I signed my son up for karate camp next week. He will have to wear a mask from 9-2, there are some breaks I believe and lunch.

Talk about mask bootcamp. We will see how it goes. Chat Icon

I know I’m in the minority. Tbh if my sons teacher couldn’t wear a mask for whatever reason it wouldn’t bother me. I also don’t see what’s the big deal about the teachers wearing masks. The only thing that would be an issue is talking through the masks and trying to teach. But I think it’s all a learning curve. I think the mic idea that the teacher posted above is great.

I want my son to go to school and I realize I can’t be picky. I voice my opinion about the masks being required for kids but It’s not that serious where I am going to be protesting or complaining about it.

The only thing I made clear to my sons school is that I don’t want to get a bunch of emails about my son and the mask. I can’t be disciplining him for not doing his school work, forgetting things, not focusing and now add getting in trouble for mask. The kid will be punished for all eternity.
