Re: Milk Allergy question-no blood test?
Dairy/Soy Intolerances are often referred to incorrectly as allergies. An intolerance is NOT an immune response to an offending substance....it's a result of an immature digestive system (which all babies have, some are just more intolerant to ceratain proteins than others). An intolerance is NOT detectable in a blood test because it is not IgE mediated the way a true allergy is, which she may have...I don't know (doubt it though since her reaction is bloody stool...classic marker for non-IgE response). The only way to determine if she is still intolerant/hypersensitive is to test her stool a few days after ingesting the dairy. It is terrible to think that she may have to go through bleeding in her gut again...but that's the way it is. My DS is 12 months old and was just oozing blood out of his anus during a re-introduction. It was horrible and I won't be doing it again for many, many months. Good luck to both of you!!!

Thank you. That is what I figured since I know that this allergy is a misnomer, since it really is an intolerance. Just the idea of making my baby possibly hurt hurts me and I guess that is why I am scared.

Re: Milk Allergy question-no blood test?
When I took Colin to the allergist to see if he had a milk allergy at 9 months they just did a skin test. I just insisted on adding a blood test to his one -yr BW by the ped so I would have a number, some sort of solid piece of evidence we can monitor, ya know?
