That's a little extreme that points you are making and there's def a gray area. I sorta agree with you on some points.

I do think this woman is being made an example of in this case by being punished to the full extent of the law.

But i don't know about you, what if this was summertime and it was 90 degrees outside, would it be okay then to leave a sleeping toddler in the car when the temp could kill her? Even if it was for 2 mins? Even in the winter, if you walked by a vehicle and there was a child in it alone, how do you know where the mom was and how long she was gone? No you don't, you would say something wouldn't you? I know I would!

Inside your home is a totally different than in public, that's just the way it is. I have 2 girls under 2, do you think i don't pee all day til my husband gets home. Of course I do, i just make sure they're safe and taken care of before i let them out of my sight. ANd yes anything can happen in myhome in seconds and that would be my fault, but I would have to live with that, but I would make sure everytime they are out of my sight they are as safe as they would be if they were in it.

I agree that my example was extreme, and I don't even believe in some of what I mentioned, but I just wanted to point out that even if it is an extreme, it still technically falls into the "leaving DC out of sight" for a few minutes. That is exactly why laws need to be "interpreted" based on the circumstances. Yes, 90 degree weather is much different, and passer-bys *should* be concerned about seeing a baby in a car without an adult within a few feet of the car.

Laws aren't always black and white. I hope they take that into account when they prosecute her. Chat Icon

Laws aren't always black and white, and i def agree with everyone she's getting made an example of, i do think though she should be punished for it just like anyone else who gets caught leaving their kids in cars unattended, but for how long and how much of a fine, that's up to the judge. There are lots of parents who do MUCH worse to their kids that just slip through.

I just don't buy she had an eye on her child at all times, she couldn't have when she was busy with her other 2 kids donating money and taking pictures. It would have taken 2 mins to take the sleeping baby out of the car, do what she had to do, and put her back in and she wouldn't be in this trouble. So what if the kid wakes up, at least she's safe.

I'm sorry, i'm very passionate about this issue, i come from many years of retail management and the service industry. And in retail i've seen it too many times that a parent not keeping their kids safe-ex, letting them stand in carts, ride in the front, not strapping their babies in, and then they topple out cause they aren't watching them and they sue the store. And I've seen much much worse happen too.

All it takes is 2 secs for something to happen and if you are in the public eye, people and police are watching. The village is watching!

As parents our jobs are to keep our kids safe. And no matter what everytime i hear stories of hurt children, dead children, and carjacked children in cars, my heart bleeds for the mom and that poor innocent baby.

I do feel incredible bad for this mom.

in that case, i don't think she should have been arrested. she took all the precautions i think any mom would take - the child was belted in, the car was locked, and she was just steps away.

i understand a police officer wanting to be cautious but this is taking it too far, IMO.
