I wouldn't do it. If it's cool with that mom, then I hope she enjoys herself. 10 weeks is very young and a week is a long time.

Mom leaves 10 week old for vacation

My husbands cousin is leaving her 8 week old for vacation soon. She has a live in nanny. I wouldn't do this, but I guess to each their own.

The fact that this woman wrote an article about it, giving many reasons and excuses why she is doing it, proves that she is insecure about her decision & second guessing it.
I personally wouldn't do it, but to each their own!!

Re: Mom leaves 10 week old for vacation

I left my 12 week home with my parents for a 5 day business trip that I accompanied my DH on to the Dominican Republic. My DS was also a preemie & home only 8 weeks.

There were many reasons I went & the first was being a mom of 2 under 1 I needed the break plus we had a stressful time with him in the NICU. I knew both our boys were in good hands & if we needed, we could be home in 4 hrs. Looking back, I honestly have no regret. My DS had no clue I was even gone & adapted perfectly without me for that time.

Mom leaves 10 week old for vacation

I'm not really seeing the issue here. She's going on vacation without her 2 month old for less than a week. She talked about how much she will miss him. She's leaving him in great care in his own home. I personally wouldn't be able to do that with my kids at that age, but she is comfortable with it and is doing absolutely no harm to her baby. So what's the big deal?

Re: Mom leaves 10 week old for vacation

I left DS#1 when he was 5 months to tag along with DH to a conference in Vegas. I regretted leaving DS behind and missed him so much.

I met a mom recently who seemed totally overwhelmed with her newborn baby. She was telling me how she was planning a vacation away from her baby.

Everyone has different circumstances.

I've met moms here and there who NEVER leave their kids. I don't necessarily think that is good either.

We've only been parents for 3 years but DH and I go get away alone about once a year.

Mom leaves 10 week old for vacation

While I don't think I would have felt comfortable doing it, I don't really care if someone else does it. What works for one person may not work for others.

ETA: I think statements like this in the article is what is causing people to get annoyed. Seems like she is the one judging moms who don't go out like she does:

"I really don’t understand women who can’t or won’t leave their babies behind for a night, if they have trustworthy help. “Take the help,” I want to tell them."

If she feels comfortable leaving her 2 month old with her mil for a week, then good for her. DH & I were throwing the idea around of leaving our kids when our baby would be 16 weeks old to go on a long 4 day weekend. Nothing wrong with a little mental break.

Re: Mom leaves 10 week old for vacation

I really thought this was going to be about a mom leaving her kid ALONE while she went away. This is ridiculous- he's with a nanny AND his grandmother- not story-worthy by any means!

Re: Mom leaves 10 week old for vacation

I don't think I'd have a problem doing it as long as she was under my parents care. I actually left for the weekend once when dd was younger than that because I was "losing it" at home. It can be very stressful and add post partum to that and yeah, I can see how a vacation could be useful. I'm not sure why this blew up into a whole crazy situation. I believe her mom was watching her. What's the big deal Chat Icon

This is one of those parenting decisions where as long as you feel confident and own your decision, it shouldn't even MATTER what the rest of the world thinks. Nobody is in danger, it's just a comfort level issue.

With that said, her long-winded post where she reallllllly stretches to justify her position certainly doesn't strike me as "confident" or "owning her decision". I mean, leaving a 10 week old with grandma is going to give him a "sense of independence"? Come on now, just say you want a break from the kid and be done with it Chat Icon

I felt so bad for her that they were making such a big deal about this like shes been the only one to go away. Whats the news?
It reminds me of that BF lady they raked over the coals.

Now she really needs a vacation. Give her a break.
I would have a hard time doing it but you know its marriage maintenance. gotta do it.

I thought the same thing! It was on GMA yesterday and I was waiting for the big faux pas and it never came.
GMA had an OB/GYN and the red head RHONY (Jill maybe?) to comment. They are qualified why??? The OB went on and on about how it was inappropriate b/c that's when the baby bonds and you don't know the detrimental damage you are doing to the bond with the baby. Really? If a pediatrician came on and said all of that MAYBE it would have a teensy bit of credibility but that is well outside the scope of an OB's practice.

Bottom line...who cares?! I think the haters are just jealous she had the opportunity for some well needed, well deserved R&R.

Incidentally, did anyone skim through the comments section for this article? Makes LIF seem almost... non-judgmental in comparison Chat Icon

I swear that the concept of "comments" is one of the worst things to happen to online media. Just because everyone deserves a voice, doesn't mean everyone deserves a microphone.

Good for her. She's leaving her baby with someone she trusts completely, so I don't see why it's a big deal.

Hardly newsworthy imo. Her mil and nanny are taking care of the baby together. I mean there are people in this world who throw their babies off bridges. Anyway, there are plenty of people with nannies that like barely interact with their kids for years.
