Mommies that have the Nikon D40x
I have the standard lens that came with the camera and I am looking into getting a better lens before my twins arrive. What kind would you recommend? Where do they sell them? Any info would help!

The 55-200 lens is AMAZING. I'm totally in love with it. I have that and the 18-55 (I'm guessing that's the standard one you're referring to already having).
In hindsight, I would have saved up for the 18-200 lens, an all-in-one so I didn't have to switch lenses. It's $$$, but would be worth it. Maybe down the line I'll sell my 2 lenses and get the big one.
I got mine as a gift, but it was purchased from Ritzcamera.com. They also have a store in Carle Place (I believe).

Do you just use the 55-200 one now, or you switch back and forth from the 18-200 lens?

I do switch, but it's not like I'm taking pics and then have to stop and switch lenses in the middle of what I'm doing.
I use them for different things. If I'm outside and want to take some good close-ups of DD, I'll have the 55-200 on. But for inside, and anywhere else where I know DD will be right next to me (and therefore too close for the 55-200 lens to work), I use the 18-55.
I haven't really used the camera for anything other than taking pics of DD

Very easy. Takes about 2 seconds. If I can do it, you can do it

Hmm, I don't know if they sell the lenses. I didn't find them helpful when I wanted to buy a filter for it...they had no clue what I was talking about and I bought the wrong size
Is there a local camera shop around there?

Re: Mommies that have the Nikon D40x
My camera came with the 18-55 and I did not buy the 55-200 because I did not want to keep switching lenses.
I really want the 18-200 VR but it's about the same price as the camera.
I wish I had spent just a bit more for the 18-135 since it is more affordable than the 18-200 VR and is a great alternative to the 18-200 and not having to change the lense.

I agree! I have a D50, and I have 3 lenses. My latest one is the 55-200 and I'm not really a fan of it. I wish I had gotten the 18-135.
If you can afford it, the best would be 18-200 mm VR, followed by a cheaper alternative, the 18-135 mm VR.

ITA- I have both also, except mine is a 70-200 I believe. I wish I got the 18-200 as well. I think I might do the same thing you are suggesting.

DO NOT buy camera stuff from these guys- they know nothing. I have a specialized camera store near me and they are so helpful. Worth paying an extra couple of bucks.

Re: Mommies that have the Nikon D40x
I bought all of my camera equipment (and my mom's) from B&H Photo. I either pick it up or have it shipped to the house.
If you're purchasing another lens, I would get the 18-200mm. I think having 2 lens was fine at first, but later gets to be a PITA. You are constantly stepping back to take photos & once your children run, they are too close if you have the zoom lens or too far away if you have the 18-55 on.
eta. I answered but have the D70.

Re: Mommies that have the Nikon D40x
I recently bought the 55-200 because i couldnt afford the 18-200. I THINK I saw a 70-300, or something like that, which would be awesome. But now I dont remember if it was for the Nikon!

Definitely B & H. They are the only place to order camera equipment. They sell all over the country and I believe ship to other countries as well.
I ordered my lense at about 4 pm one day, didn't pay for express shipping but it was at my house early afternoon the next day.

I have the 70-300 too, it's a huge heavy lens. But it's great for outdoors, like the soccer fields and such.
