Moms of 2yr olds - sleep related
I am trying to figure this out.
2 nights this week Jack woke up in the middle of the night. His naps have also been horrible this week - less than an hour each day so I know that he is overtired.
First time he was up at 4:15 for the day. Last night he was up from 3:15-6am.
A few things are coming to my mind to try and figure out WTH is going on?
1) They are doing work on the Southern State Pkwy (we live across the street) and the noise is waking him?
2) Night terrors - because he wakes up FLIPPING out - can't catch his breathe until we get him.
3) His little mind is racing, he has been saying new words everyday and trying to really talk much more. Is it that he is in overload and can't sleep?
4) He is being really thoughtful and trying to prepare me for when the baby gets here.
Is there anything I can do? Is this a phase? Mama needs some sleep!

Re: Moms of 2yr olds - sleep related
my dd is 22m and we been having problems with naps. Yesterday went to put her in crib b/c she was on my living room floor about to pass out.. she was soo tired. Got her in crib and she screamed.. wouldnt stop crying. I took her out, she ended up napping on my couch a second later. I had to settle for nap on couch b/c she hasnt had a nap in weeks.. other than me having to put her in car and drive.
Last night she also woke up at 3am, crying. I think night terror, this is the second one in about a month. Its not often but has been happening. If one of us goes in and rocks her a bit she calms down and goes back down.
Im defiantly thinking its a phase.. they went from 2 naps a day to 1 (if you can get that 1) so I think its her body adjusting.

I think it could be bad dreams, unfortunately...especially if he's waking up hysterical. I'm hoping it a phase for you!

Re: Moms of 2yr olds - sleep related
We went through a phase of her waking SCREAMING bloody murder in the middle of the night.
It would happen like once every other week, or once a week for a short time.
I think it was nightmares. Because it was a much different cry than just being whiney. KWIM?
Eventually it stopped. And I was a bad mommy, I never went in to get her. I was too afraid she'd start thinking that was OK. It would only last for about 5-10 min and she would go back to sleep.
ETA- If you're noticing a bad napping habit, that will definitely throw off night sleeping...IMO

Re: Moms of 2yr olds - sleep related
I agree, it could be any of those things. Hopefully it's a short phase that passes quickly.
We're dealing with sleeping issues over here the last few weeks too. Short naps and EARLY rising in the morning, then a cranky girl during the morning. She seems to have phases like this-- a few weeks she'll sleep great, over 10 hours at night and 3 hour naps...then a for a few weeks she'll sleep 9 hours at night, short naps, etc.
Hoping my phase ends soon too

Re: Moms of 2yr olds - sleep related
did he get his 2 year-old molars yet?
I notice everytime DS is getting teeth his sleep changes (to less sleep).
You also listed so many good reasons why this could be happening...DH is 31 and still gets night terrors (scariest freaking thing ever)

I was thinking it might be molars too. When my DD's were coming in her sleep was totally thrown off.
I hope it is just a phase and you both get some good sleep soon.

Re: Moms of 2yr olds - sleep related
Diana,
We've been going through this w/ Gracie the last 3 weeks or so. I thought it was her 2 yr molars, but dr. said only 1 may be coming & it could be months b4 it breaks through.
He said around 2 their sleep patterns change. He said DON'T go in or we're setting ourselves up for a bad habit. It's so hard though.
She's been waking up & screaming out or saying, "no no no" so I'm thinking its dreams.
Her naps have also been hit/miss lately..when she does sleep its for 2-3 hours, but some days she's just in her crib talking & playing w/ her "baby."
She's 25 months

lol --- you're too much! You're the best mom ever :)
yeah, there are 4 more molars (2 on top and 2 on the bottom) that need to come in.
So it total he should have 8 front teeth, 4 "i" teeth, 4 molars that he got probably last year and now 4 more molars that usually come in around age 2.

Re: Moms of 2yr olds - sleep related
I think it is #3 along with him getting is 2 year molars. DD was waking up early for a long time and waking up every night for at least a month. It finally stopped about two weeks ago. Turns out she is getting all 4 molars at once They didn't come out yet but I felt them under her gums.

Re: Moms of 2yr olds - sleep related
I agree that it's prob teeth and night terrors. It's so hard to really know and I also agree that I feel like once they turn two their sleep habits change. DS also has been rising early lately most days (5-5:30) and has been taking around 2 hour naps, with occasionally it going to 2.5 hours (he used to sleep easily 2.5 to even 3.5 hours). Today he slept till 7:30 and we were in shock cause he hasn't done that in weeks. and I am not getting excited b/c I know tomorrow he can be up at 5. Hang in there Hopefully they will all find their little sleep groove

Re: Moms of 2yr olds - sleep related
I know what you are going through I am HOPING it is a phase. I am going to get a noise machine and put up new black out curtains and hope that helps.
Tyler is so overtired and not getting enough sleep that he is miserable. My mom swears he is having night terrors or dreams b/c sometimes he wakes up screaming and inconsolable and it takes at least 10-15 min. to calm him down but he is still sleeping almost. I have an appt. next week with his ped. so I am going to bring it up.

Re: Moms of 2yr olds - sleep related
I think its something in the air bc my DS has been going through the same thing minus the waking up screaming...he wakes up calling me I haven't slept in days, and so I just take him to bed with me...today he was up at 4:30am for the day I had to fight with him to nap, he only napped for about an hour. I mean he must be exhausted...I am! Today is TV day so that I can steal a nap here and there...and of course he won't let me. My little guy has also been saying new words everyday and I definitely see a change happening in him...I don't know maybe its a growth spurt? All I know is that I need sleep.
