Moms of boys, do you plan on teaching

them the importance of taking care of themselves with respect to cooking, cleaning etc?

It drives me crazy how many men out there got away with never being able to cook, or clean because their moms did everything for them. They are lazy and feel like we as their wives should do these things.

Now that I have a son, I want him to be able to do these things, so that he can take care of himself and feel like he is above doing these things. Also if he does get married, he will be able to help his wife.

The way I feel, if girls are taught this, so should boys.

What do you think?

Re: Moms of boys, do you plan on teaching

I am lucky b/c DH & I share the responsibilities, and DH is an awesome cook. DS already sorts his laundry (with help of course), cleans his own messes, and puts his toys away, so I think as long as we continue to encourage this we'll be OK.

Re: Moms of boys, do you plan on teaching

DEFINITELY!! When I cook dinner DS in the kitchen with me asking if he can help, when I vacuum he goes running to get his. My DH is extremely handy so I also want him to learn how to do things around the house. If my DH is fixing something DS is right next to him with his mini toy tool box Chat Icon

I hope he has the same enthusiasm when he gets older.

YES!! I will make sure my son can fend for himself, just like his daddy did (DH was a bachelor for quite some time before I came along and HAD to do everything for himself)

Re: Moms of boys, do you plan on teaching

Absolutely! DS is almost 6,and he's been helping DW make pizza, cakes, etc. He doesn't touch the stove, but he puts the toppings on the pizza, he cracks eggs, he'll help stir, etc.

I do most of the vacuuming in the house, so DS usually takes the dustbuster, and gets under things that I can't get to, or picks up the bigger pieces of paper that I can't vacuum.

Now that we're using vinegar and water solution for cleaning (and not poisonous chemicals), he likes to clean the windows and table tops once in a while.

Re: Moms of boys, do you plan on teaching

Absolutely, but i'm hoping that i won't have to teach him any of it.

My husband already does all the cooking, helps with cleaning and takes care of our son the majority of the time.

So i'm hoping he'll learn from example. Chat Icon

Absolutely, he will learn just like my mom taught my brother, and my DH was taught by his mom.

YES!!!

DS LOVES his kitchen so that is a good start. We have already baked cookies together. EVERY adult, regardless of gender, needs to know how to cook and do laundry!

I am a big baker and am excited to share that with my little guy.

Re: Moms of boys, do you plan on teaching

Of course, DS#1 already has a few chores around the house and likes to help me cook. Once we have a larger kitchen with more work space, I plan to let them cook with me more often.

Re: Moms of boys, do you plan on teaching

Yes.

Robbie and Noah are lucky in that they have a SAHD who does do a lot of the work around the house.. they have a living role model.

They help all the time. They help me cook, they clean up dishes, set the table, fold laundry, vacuum, etc..

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I have little boys but I am raising men.

Re: Moms of boys, do you plan on teaching

I never thought to NOT teach DS everything.... He will at some point in his life live alone... and I am adamant that no one in our family eats take-out regularly or considers artificial convenience foods (ex. easy mac) a viable option for a meal.

I believe it's crutial for every kid to learn to cook... so they learn what is appropriate to eat, and what is not... and also so they know what they're eating (fat/salt/nutrition wise)

also, hate to say it, but isn't it sort of a 50's mentality that all domestic duties are for women, and all yardwork/repairs are for men?

Why do you think he has a kitchen? Chat Icon

He is always cleaning up after himself and I can see he is already a neat freak.

Re: Moms of boys, do you plan on teaching

HELLS YEAH!!! I would be mortified to have my son be the way my husband is! I would not do that to another woman!!! Besides, is DS ever lives alone, I'm not going over there to do it all for him, so he;d better learn to do it himself!

Yes I agree with you 110%. I will not be his slave. I will teach him what it means to be responsible and to take care of himself. There are men out there who still don't know how to take care of themselves cuz mommy is still spoon feeding them their needs...

Re: Moms of boys, do you plan on teaching

My 7 year old son:

*Makes his bed everyday
*Helps with the laundry
*Is the offical "meatball maker" in the house
*Bakes
*Cleans his playroom every Friday

My almost 4 year old son:

*"Makes" his bed everyday
* Helps with laundry
* Cleans his playroom every Friday

We don't have gender-specific roles here. We all pitch in doing whatever needs to be done. There are no "girl" chores or "boy" chores.
