Moms that started Whole MILK before one year please read
I feel guilty about starting to introduce whole milk at 10.5 months but I have. I didn't consult with my ped bc I felt like he would convince me to wait.
The reason I started early is bc my son relies on the breast soooooo much and up until a few weeks ago was still nursing 10 times a day and night! I wanted him to get used to something other then the breast. I will also be away from him for an entire day at 11 months and I wanted him to have the option of having a little milk (he will not drink breastmilk from the cup and I stopped pumping) I also want to start getting my body back to normalb ( I have gained weight with breastfeeding).
Anyway, he has milk from his sippy twice a day (only an ounce or so at a time) both before his naps. I still bf regularly 4 times a day. I also use milk for his cereal in the morning.
I guess I'm just writing this for reassurance. Is it okay that I introduced milk early? I need to feel better about this! (other then the guilt it is so nice to see him drinking something other then the breast!)
Just want to add that my son is n the 95percentinle for weight..he weighs more then most 1 year olds if that makes any difference at all

DS started milk at 10 months, but I never BF, so he continued to use bottles. He's 13 months and still has 4 bottles a day of milk (6-8 oz. each). My ped. recommended it because he is so large, and had started eating large amounts of table food early (he has 18 teeth). Anyway, he was fine!
We did get a script for a different vitamin when he switched to just milk from formula. I wouldn't have done it w/o checking w/ ped first, but maybe you should just call and let the ped. know that you made the switch and he might call in a script for a different vitamin.

I'm not a BTDT, but I watching our nephew grow up, since DS seems to be ca carbon copy, and he's on milk at 9m old. He's a big boy and eats a lot of table foods, has 9 teeth.

Jenn, I have Ezra on goat milk and he is just nursing in the morning and at night. I started mixing a few days ago with the BM I had left in the freezer and some formula. It's fine!

I stopped BF my first at 10 mos and did all formula not milk as for my ped. I didn't question him as why - maybe I should have LOL. So he got formula for about 2.5 mos and then was on all milk.
BTW - i had the SAME experience as you with respect to my weight and BF with #1 and now again with #2 And want you to know that once I stopped with the first it came off pretty easily. I'm 6.5 mos pp with my second and still BF so I'm still holding on to the weight!

I didn't bf any of my 3 kids AND I started whole milk before a year. So long as my kids are getting their nutrients from foods and what not, then I'm not worried. At around 15 months or so, I went from whole milk to 2%.. No regrets.

Thanks for the response and the weight thing is so annoying! 10 day pp I was down to prepregnancy weight (maybe even less) and my stomach was flat. Now I look like I'm 4 months pregnant and can't stop eating. I can't wait to get my body back

Re: Moms that started Whole MILK before one year please read
My ped gave me the green light to start DD on whole milk at 11 months (not too far away from 10.5 months). My supply dipped and hasn't recovered from when I first got AF recently, and I wasn't sure what to do if I can't keep up with DD. The ped told me as long as she gets enough iron in her diet from solids and isn't drinking excessive amounts of BM (like over 32 oz/day) then I can switch to whole milk. He said there's no point introducing formula if my supply runs out at this point. So, don't feel bad!
I'm still hoping to make it until DD turns one between what I'm pumping and my freezer stash (300 oz), but DD doesn't seem to be a fan of frozen BM lately. Even if I don't make it, I'll be switching to whole milk early as well!

I'm sort of crashing here to ask another question - is there a reason why the milk is better than the formula? I'm just wondering b/c I will soon be encountering the same issue with DD - and was just planning on starting formula - wondering why you want to start with the milk? TIA!

Formula has all the nutrients babies need before 1 while milk does not. However if you are stil BF'ing that should be fine and/or have your children on a varied food diet should also be fine

My kids started milk at 10 months and I was told to do this by the Ped. They drink no more than 12 oz of whole milk a day and this is working out fine. I just had their 12 months checkup today and the PED is happy with they way they are growing.

Re: Moms that started Whole MILK before one year please read
I just bought DS to the ped yesterday and asked about starting whole mlik. DS will be 10 months on the 30th. I was certain that he would say that I should wait, but he was all for it. He said that it's crazy to start formula now and that he should be fine with whole milk. He suggested that I try letting him sip some milk from a cup at first and then I could try putting it in a sippy cup later on. I'm going to wait a few weeks till he's 10 months, but I am def going to give it a try. I'm still going to give him BM, too until he's a year, but if I could have him 100% on whole milk right around the one year mark, I will be very happy.
I'm sure that your son will be just fine

I'm not starting milk bc it is better then formula but more so bc I want to transition him off bm. Plus, Iwould hate totransition to formula for a month and then have to transition again to whole milk so soon. HTH!
