Re: Mom's whose DC's have food allergies
DS is allergic to bananas. He may also have a latex or adhesive allergy so we have an appointment with the allergist on Monday. When I began foods with DS at 5 1/2 months bananas as the third food we tried. Within 30 minutes of giving him the bananas, he blew up like a balloon and swelled so much that his nail beds got marks that took over a month to go away. The ped said to wait 6 months and try bananas again. We did and he got a similar reaction to the first time he ate them.
This week he had a bandaid on for a couple of hours and he blistered where the bandaid was on his skin. I called the ped and they want him tested asap to determine what, if anything else he is allergic to.

DS is allergic to egg white...didnt really have a major reaction, he had a rash on his stomach form his 1st b-day which turned out to be unrelated to his allergy. While we were there though, they did a scratch test and he came up positive for it. if he has egg whites he gets either a slight rash on face, sneezes, and/or gets gassy/cries in pain. His allergy is considered mild HTH

Re: Mom's whose DC's have food allergies
DS is anaphylatic to milk. Always had reactions to the various formulas as an infant until we ended up on Soy.
When we tried whole milk at age one he broke out in hives and vomited a lot.
Went shortly after that allergy testing and he came up positive for milk/dairy.
Office oral challenge test at age 2 failed miserably - he threw up for 4 hours after the test.
Scratch test at age three still came up positive for milk - doctor did not bother with oral challenge. Will try again next year.

DS is allergic to bananas as well. He just rashes though.
I am anaphylactic with latex, and there is a connection with bananas and latex, so I wonder if he is allergic to latex as well.

Re: Mom's whose DC's have food allergies
DS has a severe dairy allergy. He was first diagnosed as an infant, so some of it took longer for us to realize than it would have now.
Symptoms back then: * Very fussy about bottles, would take forever to finish them * Projectile vomiting * Severe eczema * about a dozen dirty diapers a day * bloody mucus in his stool
He recently ate something at school with dairy in it and he was very irritable and stopped eating for about 3 days, he had diarreah, and got a horrible diaper rash.
We haven't done any challenge testing yet, we did a 1 year follow up skin test and the results were much worse than a year ago.
My friend's dd is allergic to egg and peanut. She immediately gets hives, her face swells up and has difficulty breathing. The swelling and hives last for a few days, even with benedryl. Luckily the breathing issues haven't been bad enough and she hasn't needed to use the epi-pen.

Re: Mom's whose DC's have food allergies
DD has allergies to egg, milk and dog. Egg and milk being the worst. I BF and DD has very dry skin and a rash that I thought was just the newborn rash up until she was a month old. Then she developed eczema behind her knees, elbows and by her ankles. Her whole torso always looked inflammed and felt like sandpaper. I use to use cortizone and that only worked until I stopped. I would lather her up in aquaphor at least 3 times a day. Then at 5.5 months I had enough and so did my ped. and we had blood work done and I went to the allergist. Their they did the skin test. I stopped all obvious dairy and within a week she was fine.
I never gave her egg because according to her test it is the most severe. If she has a drop of milk or any cow dairy she vomits, breaks in hives and her lips have swelled. With the dog, she is ok if she is there for the day if it is longer and she is sleeping over she just gets eczema, runny nose and sneezes.
I wanted to add that she can eat milk and egg if it is cooked in something. So she has no problems with meatloaf or cookies/cake. So even though her numbers/skin test came back bad she is ok because the protein breaks down enough for her body .

Re: Mom's whose DC's have food allergies
DD is allergic to oatmeal. She breaks out in head to toe hives, although she does seem to be tolerating it better, so we are starting to suspect she is outgrowing it.
We discovered it when she had a horrible reaction to Aveeno products as a newborn and within 2 hours after trying oatmeal cereal at 4 months she became one big hive from head to toe.

Re: Mom's whose DC's have food allergies
DD has multiple, severe food allergies. Her reactions are different depending on how allergic she is to a certain food.
She had an anaphylatic reaction to a piece of an egg (tip of the teaspoon size). She also has the same reaction to milk. She also got the tyoical hives, bad eczema, cramping and diarreah.
A few months ago at daycare 2 little girls ate peanut butter before coming to daycare and shared a toy phone with my DD - the side of face swelled shut. Her allergy to peanuts/treenuts is so severe....
Her allergies to fruit and veggies are hives and swelling of the tongue.

Re: Mom's whose DC's have food allergies
My DS is allergic to tree nuts. He broke out into hives and he was wheezing after tasting a piece of banana walnut cake from Starbucks. He had eaten peanuts before so I thought we were in the clear.

Re: Mom's whose DC's have food allergies
DS is allergic to soy, and banana. He also has indoor and outdoor allergies.
His reactions were difficult to detect before I actually knew what they were, if that makes any sense.
He always had a rash on the palms of his hands. I just thought he had dry skin. He would get dark circles under his eyes, and his skin would be very pale. He was extremely cranky at times, and would wake up sick.
The physical signs became really clear after a few months.
Rash in the diaper area. Sometimes will cover the whole body, or come out in patches.
Hives that would come and go quicky. Most of the time they were on his shoulders, stomach, and bottom. He also gets them in his eyes, and ears. They are very itchy.
Increased fluid in his ears. It would usually affect his balance.
The outdoor allergies cause cold symptoms.
Stuffy or runny nose, cough, etc...
We still don't know all of Lance's allergies yet. The doctor put him on childrens Claritin and that has helped a lot.

Thanks for your responses everyone. Cailen's symptoms sound more like KerriSteve. He gets rashes near his eyes once in a while, flushed cheeks, and a sore hiney. It's not that often but I will ask the ped about it when he gets his chicken pox shot....

Re: Mom's whose DC's have food allergies
DS has a cow milk intolerance. It is not an allergy, and does not show on any allergy tests, but when he drinks cow milk he gets wicked ear infections from the excess phlegm he produces.
We have him on Goat's milk and he does not have any issues.
He also has skin allergies and sensitivities as well.

Liza, I had to push the Ped. to do full allergy testing. It is def. worth doing. I had poor Lance on soy milk for 14 months before I found out he was allergic.
I hope everything works out.
