more houses come onto the market in spring?
we are in the early stages of house hunting and are already getting discouraged. we have narrowed our search to a few towns and I feel like we have seen everything out there. I thought there would be tons of houses to see, and that we would be looking a few times a week! my parents said a lot more people typically list their houses in the spring and that dec/jan/feb is considered slow season. is that true in your experience? we're antsy to go see more houses and keep scouring redfin and mlsli and there is maybe one new house a week and in many cases it isn't really a good fit for us

Re: more houses come onto the market in spring?
Yes, there should be a rise in the inventory of homes on the market come March, because a lot of sellers do wait until spring to put their home on the market. However, if a seller has his/her home on the market over the holidays and during the dead of winter, that is usually a motivated seller -- someone who really needs or wants to sell. Spring sellers are sometimes not as motivated -- they may want to "test the market" and see if they can get their price.
Sorry you are so frustrated! Have you consulted with a professional realtor yet. I always do a buyer consultation with anyone who contacts me and is even thinking about buying. During that consultation, I educate them about the market and the buying process, discuss the buyer's home buying needs, and give them an opportunity to interview me and find out how I can help them. I think it's so beneficial to the buyer -- at the very least, they get some free information. But also, once I know what they are looking for, I can keep an eye out for new listings to preview for them, and also go through my office's inventory of exclusive listings that are not yet on MLS.
I am running a promotion for spring - anyone who does a buyer consultation with me from now until March 31 will be entered in a drawing to win a $200 gift card to Lowe's! The consultation is free, of course, and there's no obligation. It's basically a chance for you as a home buyer to get information and ask questions in a private one-on-one setting. I just posted a blog about this on this site.
Also, you mentioned scouring the MLS and other sites for new listings. Have you heard of Listingbook? It's basically a more user-friendly version of MLS. It sends you daily email reports of new listings and other updates of interest (price changes, status changes, etc.) for homes that meet your criteria. It's also interactive, so you can mark favorites, write notes to yourself about homes you like... it's very helpful for organizing your search and it's free! You just need a realtor to sign you up. FM me if you are interested. Many of my buyer customers get addicted to it!
Hope this helps!

I hate to say it but you have to realize that it could take a LONG time to find what you are looking for. Took me 3 years to even find a house that met our criteria enough to even bid on. Talk about getting antsy. I was going out of my mind and ready to settle or move OOS b/c the market was that slim with the pickings (and I had a good budget to work with). Depends alot on your budget and wish list and what you are willing to compromise on, in regards to how quickly you find what you want.
Sure more houses come on in the Spring and Summer, but some areas in LI there isn't that much turnover or what does come on will not be all that desirable. Just wanted to tell you the reality of house hunting on LI, at least how it was for me (and many others I know who are looking in areas in LI where the market is not saturated and there is a low turnover).

ehhh, we were told the same thing last year and it didnt really happen - at least not in our price range in the area we were looking.
even now, i still see many of the same houses listed and not a ton of new ones on the market.
