However, Obamacare has nothing to do with this.

I worked in the billing department of a well known Cancer Hospital in the city and let me tell you if the Devil walks the earth it is in the form of Insurance companies!

They are pure evil and you cannot even beginning to imagine what they will do to save a $1 their way!

I saw people get denied chemo therapy because the insurance company felt that it was an experimental treatment. They should have used a non experimental treatment Chat Icon

I have seen children get denied treatment because the insurance company felt they were more likely born with a pre-existing condition therefore, they did not need to cover it. - THIS one killed me, it was when I was working the Peds accounts and it was my breaking point.

Having to call parents up and tell them they owed us $50,000 for their son's treatment because both their insurance companies denied the claims. Chat Icon

I had insurance companies tell me that according to the medical records, the patient shouldn't have been treated for cancer. They should have gotten a 3rd opinion before starting treatment - claim denied!

This position put me over the edge and I had to leave because I couldn't deal with speaking to insurance companies every day. Speaking to people who didn't even live in the US and spoke terrible English while reading straight from a manual on what to say. It was unreal!

This. A million times this.

I've been in medical billing for the better part of the last 20 years. Most of my time has been doing billing for home infusion/respiratory/DME.

Like BriBri2u, I have seen people denied chemotherapy for the most inane reasons. I have seen people denied oxygen, denied feeding tube supplies and specialized formula (mostly children) and all other things.

And I know this will sound odd, but be thankful they only cancelled his policy. One thing that Obamacare will eliminate is abusive recission, allowing recission only in the case of fraud. I have personally witnessed insurers got back 2-3 YEARS and retract monies paid to providers under the guise of "pre existing condition" (among other inane reasons that didn't make sense)

Insurance companies are evil entities. I started my career in one doing claims processing. This was back in the day before computers were programmed with algorithms to approve, pend or deny claims. Back then, the unwritten motto was "when in doubt, deny". And we did deny them. Random reasons forcing the provider to appeal. Downright disgusting, and it wasn't limited to this insurer, the practice was brought to this company by people who had worked elsewhere.

I'm really sorry about your dad's situation and I see you are really angry about this. However, insurance companies can drop anyone they want whenever they want, Obamacare has nothing to do with that.

This is why I believe we need Obamacare so that people, like your dad, can get coverage and not be slaves to the private insurance industry.

I'll be praying for your dad.

I agree! And just wanted to add as a cancer survivor..PET scans were always an issue with my insurance company and this is going back ten years. But once the doctor spoke with the insurance it always ended up getting coveredChat Icon

Re: My Dad was dropped by his health insurance company because of obamacare.

So sorry for your father. He's not alone. I think its great he pushed for his own health and even BETTER that he was able to afford the test. I hope he gets the treatment he needs.

As a survivor of 9/11 I inhaled asbestos. Really went un-noticed until AJ was born. I had some issues and one of the many tests came back with a scar in my lung. I had to 'watch it' and get another CT scan. I got one the next year and it grew. Then the following year I moved and obama changes were looming so my carrier (self insured through Aetna with my employer) denied the test. Same carrier I've had all 5 years. This year my doctor says i NEED the test. The fact it grew so quickly in a year and if it doesnt slow down it may become cancer.

I can't afford it. Chat Icon

So if I cough too hard too much my husband frowns at me and we both stare at my daughter.

Currently my insurance says its unnecessary. I will have a chest xray done (as soon as I can afford THAT) and if its more than 10cm (I think i got that measurement right) than it will show up there, if not then I may have to wait until next year and use some FSA to pay for a CT scan.

oh and did I mention? I can't say it is EXACTLY related to 9/11 so that I could keep getting service since THIS insurance wasn't my insurance at the TIME of 9/11.

To piggyback this...

Timeline of the Affordable Care Act

Here is the simple breakdown of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It is a full timeline of what is to be implemented. Also at the top of the timeline is a link to the entire act. This is the official government site for information pertaining to ACA.

I'm very sorry for your dad, but I have to agree as well. None of this had anything to do with Obamacare. Your dad's original insurance company probably would have dropped him regardless - since 2009 he had become too "expensive." Because of Obamacare, your dad was able to get new insurance. In the old days, he would have been denied new insurance because of a preexisting condition.

The test not being covered is due to the evilness of the insurance companies, not Obama's plan.

I thought, and I could be misinterpreting part of the plan, but I thought "Obamacare" banned rescissions in 2010? Again, I may have misinterpreted that part.

Either way, I am sorry to hear about your father and wish him all the best!

My understanding is yes, recission is now banned, except in the case of fraud. But this only means an insurer can't retroactively terminate your policy, it doesn't stop them from being able to drop you with appropriate notice.

Re: My Dad was dropped by his health insurance company because of obamacare.

I'm sorry about your dad and hope that he remains healthy.

Everything has positives and negatives to it.

My mom has heath insurance because of Obamacare. Before it came to be, insurance companies wanted $1200 out of pocket per month to insure her and only 1 would bc she has high blood pressure, a pre-existing condition.

Once Obama's healthcare plan came to be, she was able to get coverage at a much more afforble rate. She works part-time and my dad retired. She's too young for Medicare. Your dad still has insurance, bc insurance companies can no longer exclude him. My mom on the otherhand suddenly found herself as one of the nation's many uninsured individuals until Obama's healthcare reform.

Insurance companies are a big part of the problem. At the end of the day he is still insured.

Re: My Dad was dropped by his health insurance company because of obamacare.

I agree.. it's not obamacare.

When I go for my annual ob/gyn checkup I always get a reg. pap test and a HPV test since i've come up positive for it before. There's never been a problem but all of a sudden last year I was denied coverage for that test because the insurance company thought there was no reason for me to have that test since i've never had cancer before. Chat Icon They suggested I get the HPV shot instead of the test even though I'm about 4 years over the recommended age for that shot.

I got a bill for it, called to complain, got another bill for it... and just ignored it. A year later I haven't heard a word.

My mom also went for a recent colonoscopy and was denied coverage for that also.Chat Icon She must have called a million people to fight the charge and ended up winning.

There have been problems with insurance companies and coverage long before obama.

To the OP, I wish your dad the best.

I am so sorry to hear this.

Obamacare has also resulted in extensive caps for services there was no caps for. For example allied health. If a person suffers a stroke and needs OT/PT/and Speech, services are now capped and PT and speech are combined now, so patients only get half the cap for PT, half for speech. The result is seniors are not getting what they need.

I hope your dad gets better soon.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Not many seniors can pay for a PET scan themselves. Especially with all of the prescription donut holes now. My dad had to pay hundreds for one of his meds. It's not right.

I could be wrong but, I am an SLP and I am pretty sure that the cap has been there for speech (shard with PT) for at least 10 years. OT gets it own cap. Again, I don't work with adults but, I am almost postive that the cap has always been there.

I have to be honest, I had no idea insurance companies could drop you if you become too expensive. I am a little worried now. I had some major medical issues in the past 3 years. this past year was VERY expensive. I had many tests denied and even a hospitalization. Everything has been cleared up and accepted. I am glad to hear that I will have other options if they decide to drop me.

I have to agree.

On the flip side my cousin's cancer is in remission thanks to Obamacare. He lost his construction business down in FL due to the mortgage bubble bursting, unemployed, but just enough assets (a decent one bedroom condo) to not qualify for Medicaid. He would probably be dead by now if it wasn't for some coverage.

Being in the dental field my entire life I am very aware of how sinister insurance companies are. I understand why Oxford denied the test and I understand they do it everyday.
However Mr obama PROMISED that people that have always purchased their own private ( sometimes excellent) insurance like my dad ( who by the way has employed and paid health insurance for hundreds of long islanders in his 40 years in business) has now lost the thing he needs the most! He said people like my dad would have " more secure benefits" and that if people that are sick like my dad get dropped thy could still find excellent coverage elsewhere because other companies have to pick them up. That was not the truth.
No matter how much my dad is willing to pay he can't get what he had.
This a president that promised his plan was fair for all! My dad pays tons of taxes on himself, his business on behalf of his employees, his has paid into unemployment and disability on befalf of all of his employees, yet if his business goes under tomorrow (which is becoming closer to a reality as the administration strangles the life out of small businesses) he isn't even eligible for unemployment insurance. Now this administration that claims to be pro-small business and pro- middle class creates a system that is at least partially built on lies.

http://factcheck.org/2012/06/romney-obama-uphold-health-care-falsehoods/

You don't have to agree with me, but you also wont change my mind.

Prayers to your father and family.

I want to sincerely thank you for sharing your story. As a nurse I am horrified of the changes that Obamacare has made in just a few short months. As a patient who was diagnosed with cancer at 30 years old (I'll be considered a survivor in March 2013!) I am scared of the battles that I may have to face in the future with my insurance company as my type of papillary carcinoma is well know to return even 40 years after it's initial cure and I will require life long monitoring.

Re: My Dad was dropped by his health insurance company because of obamacare.

I am going to be honest and say that I don't really 100% understand 'Obamacare' or all of the million little details contained therein. I have read about it and I understand parts of it.. but as a whole functioning entity, I am still in the weeds.

BUT.. as a regular person I have seen a lot of negative changes in the last few years relevant to healthcare.

The costs have skyrocketed. Many insurance companies have pulled out of the small business market.. Empire being the most recent to withdraw in the NY market. The premiums are MUCH higher than they had been a few years ago.. and the limits are much more stringent. Most of the 'more reasonably' priced plans have gatekeepers.. and those that don't have tiny networks or else high deductibles and co-insurance. Small businesses can't afford the same level of investment that they had been paying toward contributory plans so more burden falls on the employee. And if the employee doesn't like it, well they can look for another job. And good luck with that in this rotten economy. Which cycles right back into the reality that job security is low, cost of living is high, small businesses are suffering and the middle class is disappearing FAST.

I don't know what to think and I don't want to point fingers or place blame because that's a useless exercise. But I do know that things need to turn around. They have to change. They must change.

I'm sorry for what your dad is going through.

I don't know if it's due to Obamacare but I have to question any government plan where they exempt themselves from having to participate (which, by the way, is against the law but somehow they get away with it). If it is such a wonderful plan, why did Obama and Congress exempt themselves? Doesn't sound right to me.

that is actually not true as far as I understand it:
congress isnt exempt. in fact section 1312 of Obamacare states

the only health plans that the Federal Government may make available to Members of Congress and
congressional staff with respect to their service as a Member of Congress or congressional staff shall
be health plans that are--
(I) created under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act); or
(II) offered through an Exchange established under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act)

My Dad was dropped by his health insurance company because of obamacare.

When HIPAA was signed into law, the insurance companies used it to incite fears of raised premiums citing raised costs from having to cover people under the portability portion (like if you leave job A and lose insurance for less than 63 days your new group insurance can't use preexisting clauses etc) AND for the coding, electronics part and even the privacy stuff. If the wind blows the wrong way, they'll use it as an excuse to raise premiums. They'll raise premiums every year regardless. Why? Because they can.

And why is it Obamacare when it is modeled on the system ROMNEY instituted in Mass? I guess that bugs me more than anything.. Romney saying how he'll repeal it but it was good enough for the people of MASS? That doesn't make much sense to me.
