yes, definitely.......there's no reason for that, it's not like she works in retail or another non-human-watching job, she watching babies!!!!!!

it would bother me too but i think i would wait and see how often you see this happening ( seeing her text, how many kids were in the room at the time, etc etc) before saying something. If it is something that happens often, yes i would be talking to someone

Was your son ok? Does she do it often? If not I would let it go, if you see her do it again then I would say something!

Re: My daycare teacher always has her cell phone in her hand... or nearby...
I think she should take care of her personal business while on breaks and not on the job.
Her job is not to text but to watch children. Even when they play by themselves.

Re: My daycare teacher always has her cell phone in her hand... or nearby...
I have worked in three different day cares/preschools and every one had a no cell phone policy for staff. It was always an issue for the staff that had kids, but we were just told to give your kids/parents the center number and they can reach you there. I personally, would say something. It only takes one second for something to happen, teachers shouldnt have cell phones on, they are major distractions. JMHO

I agree. You never know if it was an emergency. I teach and have had to get calls in class about DD. If you see it's consistent, definitely say something.

I teach and we are not allowed to have our cell phones in eyes view. I do keep mine on my desk but I dont use it near the kids

Since your title says "always" I would gather to say it's a routine thing and I would without a doubt say something! I know I can't pay attention to anything when I'm trying to send a text message, let alone several kids in a room.

In ANY job it is unprofessional to be using your phone for personl use while working. Give your loved ones your work # and they can call you there for an emergency.
And I highly doubt there was an emergency TEXT.

I watch one kid...I don't answer the phone unless he's napping...I could not imagine his mother walking in while I am standing there texting someone.

You have a good point. Most people texting don't just text once. Especially if she is young. She is probably going back and forth texting and being texted. Waiting for the next text to come then text herself. That means she is not focusing on the kids and not just for one second.

Re: My daycare teacher always has her cell phone in her hand... or nearby...
Not cool
She should be watching the kids. Something could happen in a blink of an eye.
I agree with a PP, if it was a TRUE emergency I highly doubt she'd be texting.
I'd say something and try to find out the policy, if any, on use of cellphones.
That would really bother me.
ETA: I rarely even answer my own phone when both DC's are awake. Now that they are more mobile I need my full attention to watch both of them.

OK i think that is going a tad too far IMO. I think there are PLENTY of people who have used their cells while working. When i am at work i have def used my cell to make a call when i have a free moment. In fact i call my DS daycare everyday on my cell AT work
People who care for my son, well that is another story. And i would be upset if it was habitual. If i saw it once, i don't think i would be running to say something. Sure it just takes a second for something to happen but let's face it, then something is destined to happen. Because there will always be that "second" . In most daycares there are usually 2 teachers to 6-8 kids.
Is it not right in that kind of setting with that kind of population, yes i think it is. But i don't think you can just generalize that statement to all jobs.

Sure I can, while you're at work you should be working. I am guilty of using my cell during work hours as well, but I know I shouldn't be.
If you owned a business, how would you feel if your employees wipped out their cells on your time?

This is a bit much honestly. And I know my co worker got an emergency text from her husband in officer's school in the army b/c he couldn't make a call and it was a major thing.
We are monitored at work and I don't want to use my work phone for personal calls. I text all day long.
BUT I do not work in daycare. If it seems that she is ALWAYS doing it Liza, say something!

like i said, it would depend. If it was a habitual thing that interfered with their work YES i would be upset. A phone call once or twice a day, no i don't think i would be upset.
But in the context of THIS THREAD, at a daycare, taking care of babies. To me that is more reason to react. And again, i think i would wait to see if it was habitual.

Re: My daycare teacher always has her cell phone in her hand... or nearby...
I would be completely annoyed and bothered if my child's daycare teacher always had her cell phone in her hand. It's completely unprofessional and inappropriate. Once, maybe twice, I wouldn't think anyhting of it, but you said always, and I'd be complaining already to someone in charge.

YES, that's a major no no. They should be contacted throught the center's telephone if there is an emergency.

If its a constant thing then I would address it. If it was a once in a while thing, then not sure b/c it could be something personal that she needs to keep in contact with.

I would say something... Most daycares have a no cell phone policy- for the simple fact that their undivided attention should be on the children they are caring for...
