I think everyone is pressing because of the Imus thing. Nothing else going on in the news right now, so it has blown up!!!!! Even Anna's baby daddy or the Duke players could not break what is now the Imus syndrome!

For any of you Spanish-speakers (which I happen to be), we all know what goes on during El Vacilon on 97.9 La Mega. They may not necessarily spew racism, but most of the language they can get away with is ridiculous. I rarely listen to it, because it's pretty much un-listenable, IMO. But they get high ratings and that's what keeps them on the air.

George Jefferson used to do it on All in the Family and the Jeffersons all the time. Archie Bunker, we know was no angel in the race relations department either. It was done to show people how STUPID using racial epithets and treating people differently because of their race was even if it meant using fictional characters. And that was in the 70s. Sadly, it seems like neither race has learned its lessons. I dont see it getting better.

But if one person should get heat for saying something racist shouldn't other people. It doesn't seem to work both ways in some cases.

To me, what is so incendiary about IMus' comment is not necessarily the racial comments, but that fact that he is talking about young women. I feel that it is just in poor taste to pick on a college basketball team. They're not children, but come on, Imus, pick on somebody your own size.

I think it's because the white community doesn't have an "Al Sharpton" to stand up and fight, or to organize picketing.
There is a need for people like Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson. And this is to promote EQUALITY. And its sad to say that their voices are still needed to ensure that all races are treated the same.
But I feel that maybe someone should stand up for the white community in this situation. Hot 97 is not above the law, either. White people should not be subject to being called names either. It's wrong and inappropriate.
BUT, I also don't think the DJs on Hot 97 should be fired for using these terms. Just like I didn't think Imus should have been fired, either. He was made an example of. The man had a 35 year career on radio. It's just a sad state of affairs that we're all subject to these days.

I think your original post was correct. Jackson and Sharpton do sometimes make things worse for people. I'm not saying that they are the best advocates for the African American community, I'm saying that its a sad thing that we live in a society that still treats people unequally, and that there is still a need for advocates.

And the anger and hostility will come out in other ways...in our daily lives... only adding to problem of racism and discrimination in this country.

This is sooo true. The language they get away with on there - well, let me tell you, they'd rival any amount of fines Stern ever paid if it were in English. That's not even counting their skits and parodies.

Exactly I am afriad of the lessons I will have to teach my child at a young age, and I am afraid that we will soon look upon the legacy of Dr King & other TRUE civil rights leaders with a "what might have been" attitude.

EXACTLY! Now, don't get me wrong...I could care less if someone called me a cracker to my face cause I seriously don't take offense, but this BS thats been going on all week really P's me off with this whole Imus thing It doesn't seem to work both ways and thats the real problem.
Imus is still an idiot for what he said though, i am not defending his behavior. JMPO
