I think that the issue with Imus is not that he made a racial comment about a whole race, he directed the comment to a particular group of woman. He personalized it.
I understand that he directed it to a specific group of women but I still don't think he is any worse than what other stations get away with on the radio.

Posted by LaurenExp There is a need for people like Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson. And this is to promote EQUALITY. And its sad to say that their voices are still needed to ensure that all races are treated the same.
Unfortunately, they are not for equality. I think that is the biggest tragedy.
Precisely.

Too bad when Sharpton and Jackson said the same thing @ 5 years ago nobody called them on the carpet for it. Of course that didn't stop them from screaming about Imus, and I'm sure it won't stop them from defending the DJ's this morning. (not that Imus was right, but the whole entire mess has been completely blown out of proportion).

ETA: This double standard is sad to me.

Re: My hs students informed me today that on Hot 97, the DJS call white people crackers and honkeys...
I'm confused how "cracker" and "honky" are even on the same level as the "n-word" I mean I understand it's a pejorative but do people honestly believe that it is the equal negative that the "n-word" is?
I mean, were millions of "crackers" and "honkys" enslaved and kept down for hundresd of years? Was there a Civil Rights movement of the Crackers? I don't get how anyone can compare the two as being on the same level of offensiveness.
Were crackers segregated, socially discriminated against?
I really don't understand how people can actually say that "cracker" and "honky" is the equvelant and therefore "racist". Being that white people have never been considered a minority, how could they -as a race- be considered victims of racism?

Actually it references the intelligence level, and contribution to society (or lack of) of a specific part of "white" america. It is not INTENDED to be used in a friendly tone. I do want to point out that almost every single culture existing in this country today has been enslaved/repressed at one point in their history. I also want to point out that allowing the use of anti-white/caucasian speech is also taking advantage of what some people refer to as "white guilt," which is a growing phenomena where the intent is to have any caucasian feel personally at fault for the Dutch slave trade in the US. It is a very touchy and arguable subject, but a very real occurence in our society.

Very good points and definitely fod for thought.
What of Georgians and Flordians using the term to describe the fact that their family was born and bred in GA/FL - Georgia Cracker, Florida Cracker? Is that just a form of co-opting?
I understand the term "cracker" as a description of a type of people - different than "hick" or "hillbilly" - but I don't see it on the same level as the "n-word". Perhaps that's my own ignorance; that I don't understand it enough?

Perhaps that's my own ignorance; that I don't understand it enough? I think the GA/FL folks are doing 2 things....one, differentiating themselves from the "Yankees" that migrated from the north , and 2, the same way in which A-As use the n-word with each other....by making it acceptable it softened the blow of how pointed of a comment it used to be.
And these comments are not necessarily on the same level as when some one uses the n-word b/c the emotional attachment that goes along with is has waned, but the malicious intent behind its use is still very real IMO.
