My mom and sisters think...BF related
... that I am gross for teaching my DD that boobs are for feeding babies. Anytime my DD point out her boobs or mine I always say "boobies make milk for babies". I want her to BF, not that I will ever push it or be mad if she doesn't but I want her to know that that is natural. WELL, my sisters and my mom think I am so gross that I say that to my DD. Am I? Will people think it is weird if she "mentions" this in the future. Like if she is in school and says "boobies make milk for babies" Should I just stop talking about it?

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
People have a lot of hang-ups about BFing. I think by talking to your DD about it, you are (hopefully) preventing her from having a hang-up about it as well. Tell your mom and your sister to shush.
It's NOT gross at all.

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
Well, what's the alternative...I mean kids want and need to know about many things. Maybe next time you can say...."Boobys are for your father to bamboozle. They are sex toys honey". I feel sorry for your Mom and Sis for thinking there is anything gross about BFing or talking about BFing....but yay for you for teaching your DD the truth about how the world works.

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
I don't think it's gross BUT I will also mention that they are private...
I like to educate my kids on all that type of stuff (boy and my girls) but I also like to make sure that they know it's private.. I would never want someone taking advantage of any information I teach my kids..

Ryan def. knows the function of a boob, and that it's mommy's private body. I don't think it's gross.

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
My 3 year old "nurses" her dolls. She sees me nursing her brother all day. I see nothing wrong with it. If they mention it out in public it will prbably be the least embarrassing thing they would say about any other body parts

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
Yup...boobies are for feeding babies, but they are private places. Emmy is to young to get it yet, but when the new baby comes she;ll be at the PERFECT mimcking age....we're starting young. The truth is boobs WERE made to feed babies, despite what our oversexualized world says SOrry I just get pizzed when people are taken aback by the PROPER explination of body parts. Does it need to be age specific, yes, but I would rather my daughter grow up knowing what her boobs are for then thinking she needs to pad them to get a man........Sorry

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
I wish my mother talked about boobs that way with me. I think you should add to the conversation that some people are uncomfortable with talking about boobies because their mommies didn't explain it to them. And that conversations about boobies should be private.
Because when I babysat, and the little girl was told boobies are for baby's milk. She asked to see and touch mine and squeeze them for milk. I thought it was funny, but I have a sense of humor the size of an elephant. I think some people would have been really offended by that. I told her my boobies are private, and that hers are private for her. It gave her great pride.
the next day she told her friend about boobies and that mother approached me, not the parents, but me the babysitter and told me it was inappropriate for me to discuss boobies.
I'm still confused about the situation. But I think some boundaries about conversation with others is as important as open conversation with your mommy.

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
I don't think it's gross at all.
I recently told DS that babies drink milk out of boobies. I'll be BFing DS#2 come August so when DS asked what those things were called again, I told him boobies. He asked what they "did". I figured that was my opening to tell him what he'll inevitably see me do soon. I told him they are a part of a ladies body and babies drink milk out of them when they are very little. He asked a ton of questions... which one? from the middle? Did I drink milk out of those? etc. He talked about it for a few days and sometimes tries to touch them... I remind him that they are private and we don't touch them. He hasn't mentioned them at all for a while, but my concern wasn't so much that it was gross, but that I was going to have a 4 year old BOY child talking about it all the time and mentioning it to women on the street. LOL
BTW... my mom didn't think I should have told him what they "did".

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
I think there is nothing wrong with what you tell DD and I tell my nieces the same thing when they watch me BF Sienna. I plan on teaching Sienna the same thing because there is no reason why anyone should feel grossed out or ashamed of BFing. I think it is sad that breasts are viewed basically only as sexual and not as utilitarian as well.

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
No disrespect to your mom or your sister but my first thought was that it was a little odd that THEY found it gross to teach her that breasts are for feeding babies. Personally I agree with you

While I don't think it's "Gross", I think while you may be attempting to PREVENT a hangup, saying it too much can also be a problem as well.
Children can become obsessed with certain things and I do agree there has to be a fine line between your DD understanding that breasts "CAN" feed babies, but for her to become to focused on that could also pose an issue as well. Again JMO.

That was my first thought, too. What is the alternative? I honestly don't understand what's gross about it.

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
My kids are taught the same thing. Mommies have boobies so they can make milk and feed their babies. I have to explain that someday dd will be a mommy and have milk in her boobies but ds will be a daddy and won't get to. He is very upset he won't be able to breastfeed lol

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
The only issue I have with it is when people call them boobies. That skeeves me.
What breasts do? No, I don't have any concern over talking about that with little ones who are asking questions or are inquisitive, etc.

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
I don't think that's gross at all. And this is coming from someone who could never ever bring herself to breast feed even for one second. It wasn't even an option.
Yet I see nothing wrong with telling that to your DD.
Not sure why it would be considered gross at all!

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
Right. You should totally tell her it's for turning guys on.
You are telling her exactly the purpose of it. I did the same thing when my kids were little & I was breastfeeding. They may have forgotten it by now or maybe not. They haven't mentioned it since.

I think its great you are teaching her that. J&M know my boobies make milk for their baby sister, and see me BFing her all the time. What do they prefer you tell her?

Re: My mom and sisters think...BF related
I'm one of those people who has weird hang ups about breast feeding...it's not gross but I definitely wouldn't teach my daughter that or want her to go around saying that. It's just a non-issue to me that a child doesn't really need to go around knowing/saying that. But to each his own...again I don't think it's gross - just not something I'd want my DD going around saying.
