My PSA for the day....If you don't have it - get Life Insurance. NOW!
I found out one of my old co-worker's husband died this weekend. He was 43. Apparently the whole family was sick with the flu and he got really bad on Friday and went to the hospital. A virus took over his whole body and he passed away. They have 2 kids that are in middle school. My friend works part time and can't afford the house and all their expenses on her salary alone. I am so sad for them. I can't even imagine.
If you don't have it - please make plans to get life insurance ASAP. We got it when I pregnant with DD.

How tragic for their family.
We have it, Chris' dad passed away at 47, with five kids (21, 19, 7, 4 and 2) and we got it as soon as Chris went on the job (right before I got pregnant with C3)

My condolences for your friend I have been bugging my DH about this for months. He is finally setting us up for his open enrollment in Jan. This flu is so random- I can't believe that it is killing healthy people

OMG my husband got the flu last weekend and he was so sick but I can't even imagine going through this. Was it just the flu virus?? Or did he have medical conditions? We got life insurance when i had my daughter.

So young and so tragic! Because of DS, we had to change our plan for our will. I can't wait to have it finalized. We did life insurance the minute we had DS.

That is so sad DH and I both have it, it's the one thing that no family should ever be without. And if you get it while you are young enough the premiums are very low (I think I pay close to $200 twice a year for a 750K policy).

DH and I have had life insurance since we got married, then we have upped it at different stages: having the baby, buying the house, me being a stay at home mom. You need to protect yourself all around. Also, I would add telling people to get LTD insurance as well.

So sorry to hear . I agree it is very important. I never thought much about it until DH started working in the business. Now I can't believe how foolish I was.

We have been talking about this recently, we have 2x DHs salary through his work, but we have been thinking that we really need to increase it because that wouldn't quite cover the mortagage and student loans If something were to happen we'd want to have enough to make sure there was no debt left.

That sounds like a great price -- do you mind me asking what company you got it through? We are looking into getting insured right now...
That is terrible....43 is way too young. My condolences to the OP's co-worker....

Same happened to my very good friend. He left behind 3 children with no insurance. Worst part is they had a HUGE home on the water, travelled all the time and the kids got ALOT. Its been 3 hard yrs for them but she just announced her engagement. She really went from riches to rags. I am glad she got through it all. I hope the same for your friend and her family.

We have it through work. We just finished getting another policy on DH (outside of work) and are working on a non-work one for me too.
How horrible

Re: My PSA for the day....If you don't have it - get Life Insurance. NOW!
I already learned this the hardway....but I feel lucky that I did not have kids
I still have to pay 2 peoples bills on 1 persons income- I did have a small accidental death policy that I some how pulled off cashing in
but even that took 6 months to get
when I do get remarried- there is no way I would not have a large life ins policy- enough to cover the mortgage- car loans and any other debt plus some extra
for those that cringe at paying it- don't!
SMILE - it could save you from even more heartache if god forbid you need it

And honestly, you probably want a policy outside of work for him too. If he loses his job or changes jobs that policy goes away. The older you are when that happens, the more expensive the premiums.
Also-SAHM's should have it too. How would the parents who works outside the home be able to afford to replace all of what you do (child care, house care, etc etc).

I know, it is just another bill that is hard to pay every month, things add up quick'
But I know that we need it, ESPECIALLY with the kids

Re: My PSA for the day....If you don't have it - get Life Insurance. NOW!
I'm so sorry for your co-worker's loss.
Dh has life insurance and I have it thru my job ( 1.5 annual salary) and need to get my own policy in addition the free one because that would never be enough if something happened to me.
I also think its really important for us as parents to make up wills and decide who will care for our children if something happens to both parents. DH and I havent done that yet, but we think about it all the time and need to get moving on it.

Re: My PSA for the day....If you don't have it - get Life Insurance. NOW!
That is so sad. It really does blow my mind when I hear that people who have families do not have life insurance.
My husband has a personal 2 million dollar term life policy and a $100k whole life, in addition to a $500k policy from work. People need to remember that work policies are good while you are employed, so it is really importatnt to get personal insurance in addition to work sponsored policies.
I also have a $1 mil term life on myself in addition to the $250k I get from work. It may sound excesssive but we are young, make good money and god forbid something were to happen the last thing you want to worry about is how are you gonna pay your mortgage and take care of your family.

My husband and I got policies shortly after my dd was born. Something to keep in mind is that you and your dc will also receive social security benefits. In most cases not enough to cover expenses but something to consider when figuring out how much of a policy you need.

We just upped ours. We have 1.5 million between both of us plus what DH gets through work. More on DH than me since he is the main provider.
I highly suggest going through a financial planner to see what you needs. Most people do not have enough life insurance.

Re: My PSA for the day....If you don't have it - get Life Insurance. NOW!
How sad :(
It scares me. I have it covering my DH through my job and I also have a small amt through a supplemental policy at work covering me. But since my DH got laid off last year, if God forbid anything happens to him, I really only have that tiny amy through my company. He used to cover me through his old job. I would never be able to afford this house on my own. And right now we can't afford to buy a policy. Unless anyone has an recommendations...
