my turn to ask a baby shower gift question
a good friend of mine has been trying to get pregnant for as long as i've known her. she finally is pregnant!!!!
yesterday, i got an invite to her baby shower. she's registered at babies r us.
as most of you know, i'm a knitter and a crafter. the mom-to-be loves to crochet and quilt. luckily our talents don't overlap, so i won't make anything she can make herself
ok, so i want to out-gift ALMOST everyone. i can't compete with granparents-to-be who will be going nuts because of the trouble they've had getting pregnant.
i'm thinking: * hand knit baby sweater (mom-to-be mentioned sweaters and not blankets as a need) * diaper cake * personalized printed onesies
she is a wonderful person and deserves to finally have her wish of becoming a mom. i really want the gift to convey that message to her.
ps. what kind of diaper cakes do people like best? there are so many styles.

Your knitting is so beautiful....I think a blanket that will match the baby's room is something that will be used for years and its so rare to see handmade gifts like that.
That diaper bear is really cute too.
I was at a shower recently where there were three diaper cakes-its pretty common now IMO

From what I've seen on here, your knitting is great!
How about some holiday sweaters (Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's day)?

My best friend got an "outfit cake" at her shower the other day, def a show stopper! You could incorporate all of your ideas and them some!
If I have a pic I will post it later, my camera is dead so I can't check now.

Re: my turn to ask a baby shower gift question
I agree with a hand-knitted blanket and perhaps an outfit that she can use as the baby's take home outfit? I also love the idea of the towel bear using some hooded towels because like others have said, diaper cakes have become pretty common and you don't know if they will even use that brand diaper so they may go to waste.
Today in Gymboree I heard someone talking about one of their shower gifts being a clothesline that she pulled out of some type of container (didn't hear how it was packaged but I can find out next week if you want) but when she pulled it out, there were all different holiday onesies (My first Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, etc.) attached to the line with clothespins. She said it was a huge hit and it was her favorite gift.

Re: my turn to ask a baby shower gift question
For my baby shower my sister made about 20 personalized onesies in pretty much every size imaginable. She bought white onesies from Carters and then bought iron on transfer paper that comes with a program for the computer so you can print them yourself. My DH loves those stupid saying t-shirts and she made some of the same sayings for my DS so they would match. She also made some that have to do with my profession and others about our family. I love putting my son in them and they cracked me up opening them all at my shower.
ETA: there were some general ones too, like "I did nine months before I broke out" with a pic of some handcuffs. "I hide my crack in my diaper" "I still live with my parents" "Here I am! Now what are your other two wishes" <---which would be a great one for your friend who has wanted to get pregnant for so long

Re: my turn to ask a baby shower gift question
A friend once did custom onsies for each month for the baby's monthly photos. That was awesome. I love the towel bear someone posted up top.

this is exactly what i'm thinking of doing. i've done it for two friends, before, and they were big hits.
the first friend didn't know she was pregnant yet, when she went to my wedding. so one of hers said, "i went to liz and john's wedding and all i got is this lousy shirt"
i love the "generic" ones you listed. i might borrow a few of those
