N. Carolina girls please come in

6 yrs ago I moved to charlotte...southpark area.
loved it a lot. expensive.

then we moved to huntersville, north of charlotte. liked it a lot. 2 hour drive to the mountains. lots of lakes. really safe area.

then we moved to ballantyne...south of charlotte-this is lala land. everything is wonderful, gorgeous. so much to do. events all the time.

after that Waxhaw. DH's dream. Quaint country town invaded by NYers. Train went down main street...he could have stayed there forever. schools are excellent. super safe. it was a great way to live.

then we were offered a promotion we could not turn down-jacksonville, nc. you won't be moving here-no one ever does unless they are marines. but i know coastal carolina very well now.
I would live in Wilmington. very cool area. houses of all different price ranges.
DH put in for a transfer to Cary/Apex area. I don't think we will get it-but that area is growing, gorgeous, and all NYers.
I love living near the beach...my beach is dreamy-emerald isle-it is on the crystal coast, southern outerbanks.
dh always hoped we would end up in the mountains. asheville is a very cool town. my sister went to college there. like a west village in the middle of mountains.
I know a ton about charlotte...I would recommend charlotte to anyone.

Re: N. Carolina girls please come in

I live in Apex. I have also lived in Cary-all suburbs of Raleigh. It is a great place to raise a family. VERY family friendly. Raleigh is not the greatest city, but it is getting better.

N. Carolina girls please come in

We live in Union County, NC...a suburb of Charlotte. We absolutely LOVE it here. The area is super family friendly, safe, great schools, lower cost of living, great weather. It's just an awesome place to live!!

For me the only con is that my family and friends are far away....but we visit often and my family does as well.

Re: N. Carolina girls please come in

I'm in the piedmont triad (between Winston-Salem & Greendboro). Been here for just over 5 years.
Overall I love where we are, however now that my girls are getting closer to school, im considering working again & I feel like there might be more job opportunity for me in the Raleigh/Cary area. Plus I feel like it might be a better click for an obvious NY.

Re: N. Carolina girls please come in

Hi Girls,
My husband and I are considering a move to NC from LI. We'll only go if a few things are possible...
1. He's a police officer here and would like to make a lateral transfer.
2. I would want to stay at home with our kids.
3. We'd like a nice, new home in a nice area.
Do you think these things are possible??
Can we survive on a police salary (think it would be like 40+ grand)?
I'd be willing to work part time if I had to, but my wish is to be at home more to raise my girls.
Thanks in advance for any input!

In charlotte it would be very hard to have a home in a nice area on 40k. I am as frugal as they come, i can't see it happening.
You could rent an apt in a nice area...2 bedroom for 1100. I had a townhouse in a nice area for 140k.

I don't live in NC, but I think people need more information to helpl you out. Do you guys have any debt ( credit cards, student loans, etc) What are your expenses like in general? Do you drive new cars, do you want to travel/ eat out frequently? Do you have any savings?

Re: N. Carolina girls please come in

Have you looked into the police dept & how transferring works. Some jobs down here are very "local" hire & would hate to see him have a problem. I also know a PD officer & their family is not included in the benefits (pretty crappy)

Living on 40k? Guess that depends on your bills, expenses, etc. You can see my home in my albums, it's new & we love it, & im a SAHM, but definitely not 40k.

You can do a neighborhood search & see what houses are going for.

Re: N. Carolina girls please come in

We moved to Holly Springs ( 20 minutes SW of Raleigh, about 8 minutes from Cary) a few months ago.

We really like it here. Schools are good, its family friendly, our subdivision holds many events for families and children. Its nice and quiet. Its a much smaller town than the ones aforementioned, but thats what we wanted. People are soooooo nice. Our mortgage is much less than what we paid in rent back in ny and nj.

The only con is more of my own issue. Im kind of shy, so its a little harder for me to befriend people, especially because I became a SAHM. We moved here without knowing anyone. Despite these issues, I dont regret our decision at all.

. Im not aware of your finances or your lifestyle, but I know my husband and I would not be able to pull off living on 40k in a new home in a nice area.

I used to live in Wilmington, NC and I really liked it! Awesome beach town!

At the time, I was a single mother with one son, working as teacher making almost $35,000/yr and it was tough. IDK how a family would survive on just $40k/yr, even in the Carolinas.

Thank you all for your input and honesty. I knew even writing my previous post that it didn't seem realistic. I guess I was just hoping for hope-as crazy as that sounds.

I think it was a combination of things.
Dh worked from home, we were together all.the.time.
I was pregnant, and had a baby with no family around.
I found it very racist. Being in an interracial marriage that made me nervous. More so for my son.
I also am a NY'er. It was way to southern bible beltish for me. Maybe in 20 years we will try it again, but for now Im much happier in NY.

Were people racist to your face or was it just a feeling you got?

Re: N. Carolina girls please come in

I live in Harrisburg NC (just outside of Charlotte). DH commutes to Charlotte (30 20-30 minutes tops).

I used to work FT in Charlotte too, now I work PT at home as a project manager.

We have 3 kids. Our house was 9 years old when we bought it. Harrisburg is a nice, low key town in the next county. Taxes are around 1,700 for a 4 bedroom, 2 story 2.5 bath with good schools. We have some stuff to do nearby but I think nothing of driving all over for various activities.

We could make it on DHs salary but we could not make it on 40K.

However, we bought at the height of the market (2007). If we had gotten a better deal on the house maybe we could have. My BFF and her husband bought our exact house in our neighborhood and paid 40K less (that is huge when houses are priced at mid 200s).

I know plenty of couples where one is a teacher or other profession where the salary is not high (in NC) and the other is SAH. I do not know the details of their finances but somehow they make it work.

I say look around, consider non-new construction and be honest with your expense, debt and budget.

I have made a ton of great friends from various sources. Parents from the daycare my kids go to (2 really good friends), my BFF moved down a couple year ago, a couple friends from my old career, a few friends from this board (when/if you move, organize a GTG and invite us all lol), my neighbor. You have to get involved and put yourself out there (talk to Janice for more about this).

I think racism exists everywhere. I have not felt it here any moreso than LI or any where else I lived. However, I can't discount what JennZ says as I am a white girl with a white DH so our experiences might vary. One thing that is different is that it is not uncommon for people to ask you what church you go to. I found it so odd when first moved here, it just wasn't something that was asked in LI (or, up north as they say here).

Good luck with your decision!
