Re: Name some great Suffolk County towns to buy a home in!
i would recommend: east islip, oakdale, sayville, patchogue village - if you're looking for southshore. north shore (which i am partial to ) - i would recommend: miller place, mount sinai, port jefferson, smithtown, st james, kings park, and northport.
i would stay clear from: amityville, copaigue, wyandanch, brentwood, bayshore, deer park, central islip, centereach, coram, and mastic.
some of these towns have really nice parts, i just tend to think in proximity, their bad parts are really bad and i personally wouldn't want to get too close; plus, if you have children - then obviously they will wind up in those school districts.
smithtown and miller place school districts are probably the best on the island.
i am speaking from having lived in suffolk county my entire life; my father and brother are both suffolk cops, my sister is a suffolk 911 operator and i also worked at suffolk hq with 911 and dispatch for 3 1/2yrs, so i know a lot of what goes on, and where - things that don't make the news, papers etc.

I love my neighborhood and town but as stated above..with Amity Harbor the schools are not good We do love the beach, park, and water in our backyard but the PS have us worried and if we do stay they are going to private school. Otherwise I am south shore Nassau though

Re: Name some great Suffolk County towns to buy a home in!
we're buying our home in Amityville Village (south of merrick)- it's gorgeous and no where near the bad part of Amityville (north of sunrise hgwy). The taxes are high because the land size is alot larger than most towns in that area with a smaller house price tag. The village has it's own police deptmt, which monitors the streets all day- very safe. There are tons of kids in this area and everyone i've spoken to who live there loves it! Never heard of gangs in this area.
One big caution is the school district though- be prepared to send your kids to private, which seems to be the choice of most in the village.

we are currently looking in Bayport and Blue Point. they have cute towns (and are close to Sayville town which is great too), have good schools and are very safe. there are plenty of great towns that will fit your criteria. good luck with your search!
