naps in daycare?

noah is 6 months old and we just started him on cereal and veggies/fruits. he is not a big napper, especially in daycare. at home, we have a routine of singing songs on the glider and then he nestles into my arms and while he is drowsy i put him in the crib.

at daycare they just put him in the crib and he cries and cries. they tell me that i have to conform to their way and that i shouldn't cuddle him and then put him down for a nap. i am a FTWM, so i really relish the quiet time i have with him, but i also understand that they have other children in the room and can't do the same as i do at home.

so how can we get to a happy medium? how can i help them get him to sleep better and for longer stretches at a time? any help is appreciated!!

Well Just my opinion...but I think your daycare is wrong.. you are the mother.. I know my daycare has a rule.. they are not to be left in the crib for more than 10 mins if they are not asleep. they cuddled and rocked him to sleep but also....tried to get him to go down on his own... and eventually he did it.

As for sleeping longer.. my son was king of the 30 min nap until around 6-8 months I think..it happnes gradually.

Some things maybe swaddle (my son never was swaddled but it works for lots of babies)

in the meantime.. snuggle that beautiful baby all you want!!!Chat Icon

they probably used a harsher way of saying it, but IMO they're right. If you keep rocking him to sleep, you'll be doing that for the next year...at least. He needs to learn how to self soothe and fall asleep on his own. at this point I can put my DS in the crib fully awake but tired and he'll fall asleep.

i'm a FTWM too and i know it's hard to not get that quality time. I get home with DS at 6pm and he's in bed by 6:30. it sucks. but ur making it harder for you later on. i would just do what the daycare does. put him in the crib tired, but awake. let him cry a couple of minutes. go in and rub his back. does he take a pacifier? i would do whatever you can to NOT pick him up. he has to get used to doing it himself. The same thing happened with my DS- he was a short napper until he moved to the next room, where they had set naptime.

Not sure how they do it (because I rock him until drowsy too) but, he takes 2 good naps there a day now. This started around 9 months.

Before then, there were some days at daycare he'd only sleep for 30 minutes because he'd be up the second another baby would make a peep.

ETA - DS didn't start napping in the crib at daycare until 7 months, before that he'd nap in the swing or bouncy seat. Made everyone's life easier.

he wont take a pacifier :( my dd loved the pacy! but he is so different. i agree that he needs to self soothe, but to let him cry for a long period of time imho is ridiculous. for as much as they tell me they can't rock him, they can't let him "cry it out" either. as for the swaddle, he hated it and he is a belly sleeper anyway. they don't have a routine yet for him, which i think would help tremendously.

no, i agree they should not let him CIO at daycare. he should be comforted if he's screaming. how long has he been there that he's not on a routine yet?

ITA 100%

DS is also the king of 30 min naps Chat Icon but at home he will nap for 3 hours Chat Icon Chat Icon

the issue for us is that at home, he gets a lovey - a burp cloth. At daycare, they wont allow that in the crib which i understand 100%. Maybe a small lovey would help soothe him at daycare?

Its the lights and noise. Can they move his crib to the most quiet part of the room? In a darker, more quiet corner?

ITA on all points. You are paying them to take care of your child and it is your right to request things be done a certain way or find someone who will do things the way that you want them done.

Re: naps in daycare?

I think the daycare is being a tad harsh, but you also have to get him to go to sleep by himself.

DS is almost 14 mo now..and maybe i started this late..i dont know. But he was a terrible napper since birth. as he got older we were still doing the bedtime routine and naps where he would be held and rocked until asleep then put him down. We had a bad stretch before his bday in october where he was up every few hours during the nite wanting to be held, etc.

So I had to put kaibosh on this. We started with the bedtime routine and putting him in the crib after his last bottle, not fully asleep. the first nite he cried for like 20 min, i then went in and rubbed his back, etc. took a few nites, but now he goes down on his own within a few min, and we then started doing this with naps. Im home 2days a week, my mom has him 1 day..so those 3 days (and the weekend) we put him in the PNP, he screams, cries for a few min, then plays with his toys and usually within 15min he plops down and is out. He's been taking one solid nap 1hr 30-2hr a day now.

at daycare, they will rock him in the glider and i swear he would nap better there than at home. I have no idea what they would do..LOL. Now he does what the older kids do and take that same solid nap there in the crib.

I think you need to start doing something like this with him b/c it will not get easier.

your daycare however, should help as well and not let him cry in the crib for long periods of time.

Re: naps in daycare?

we happen to be home today b/c he is getting over having a stomach virus.

one of the big problems is that the daycare is 1/2 hour away and he sleeps in the car between 8-830am in the morning.

today, i fed him his solids and then he wanted the bottle. he drank 4 oz and passed out. he only slept for 20 mins. he has been in his crib now awake but content for about 1/2 hour. he's yawning.

etd to add that he just had a huge bm-no wonder he woke.

this is the schedule i am trying to work on. any input is appreciated!!!!

6:30-wakeup, reflux meds (can't eat for 1/2 hour after)

7am-bottle

8am-leave for daycare (he usually sleeps in the car)

9am-fruit and cereal

10:30am-nap

11:30am-bottle

12pm-veggie (i can't give veggie at night, he's too gassy)

1:30pm-nap

3:30pm-bottle

4:45pm- pick up from daycare (sleeps in car)

5:45pm-cereal

7:30 bottle and bed
