Nassau county universal pre k question

Hi, I currently live in Queens where there are universal pre k's on nearly every corner, mainly at catholic schools and private day cares/pre schools. I am considering a move to nassau county but was wondering if the situation was the same out there? I feel like I know a lot of people paying for pre k or complaining that their district doesn't have pre k. Thanks!

Nassau county universal pre k question

I am no help, but could someone explain universal prek to me in the most basic form? How do you know if your district has it? How does the process work?

I think it depends on the school district. No universal pre-k in my district in Nassau.

There is no Nassau County-wide universal pre-k. It is on a district to district basis. And the ones that do have it (that I know of) do it by lottery. It isn't an automatic thing.

Long Beach has a 1/2 day. I didn't register until June of that school year and I still got in. I also sent my DS to Long Beach Catholic as well since they have a 1/2 day program as well and that is $350 a month.

Re: Nassau county universal pre k question

I need it to be from 8 am to 6 pm because i work so Universal Pre K is a moot point for me.
I do Pre K through my daycare and ti's 630 am to 630 pm if needed.

These district things would never work for me,
How would that work for working moms?

Before and after care. So it could mean busing for the child depending on the district. Sometimes they only have the B/a care at certain buildings.

We have UPK in our county (Rockland) and DS was chosen for a spot this year).

Our daycare offers transportation - so they take him back and forth each day. It's not saving me much $$ but, I wanted to do it to get DS used to going someplace else for school (since he used to not do change well).

Some of the other UPK programs are offered in places that offer full day daycare as well.

Doesn't sound worth it to me.
I'd rather pay what I pay and have her comfortable in one place where she has been since 9 weeks old.
To me, that piece of mind is worth every single cent.
I can't imagine her going on a bus to before and after care etc.
All to save a few bucks.
This sounds like a great option for SAHMs though.

My district does not offer it. You have to check with each district.

It varies so much. I'm in western suffolk and we have full day UPK from 9-3. Ours is run by our local YMCA and there are a few different locations where it's held. From what I hear many of the kids that need before and after care use the YMCA location. GL!

My godson lives in Farmingdale. He's in a universal pre-k that is run by Hofstra. It's in a public elementary school close to his home but not the school he will attend next year. It's 1/2 day which works for his parents because his mom drops him off in the the morning and his dad is a sanitation worker that is home by noon. It was a lottery system to get in. If he didn't get in he would have done another year at the church school that he went to last year. He seems to enjoy the U pre-k.

Re: Nassau county universal pre k question

Most districts now have it, but there is a lottery to get in. In order to get UPK information, you need to have your child(ren) listed on your school districts census. Bring their birth certificate to the enrollment office when they are 3 and you will begin to get school mailings and information. UPK is typically only 2 1/2 hours a day. If you are looking for a full day program, you will have to go private and pay for it.

Fyi not all districts are lottery. Ours is not, all kids now get full day. They do have some kids whose parents opt for half day and that is still offered in one location.

Me either. We will be keeping DS in the daycare he is in until K.
