Need food help-foods that don't aggravate reflux, that don't stay in your throat all day!
I need suggestions for things that I can eat that won't sit in my throat all day or cause my esophagus to feel like it is on fire. Every time I even hiccup, I can feel a wave of acid traveling up and it is making the nausea worse. I have no idea anymore what I can eat. To make it worse, I am getting stomach pains that feel like an ulcer (I got an ulcer my second year of law school and it is killing me). Any ideas? Thanks so much ladies!

Re: Need food help-foods that don't aggravate reflux, that don't stay in your throat all day!
I have RAGING heartburn/reflux/ulcer-ish pain so I can totally relate. I do very well with yogurt since it coats things going down and neutralizes some of the stomach acid - when it is totally bad go for non-fruit (vanilla or plain).
I stay away from most fruit. NO tomatoes. Pasta works well and carbs of course but none of that is very calorie conscious...
Breakfast for me is usually a martin's potato roll with a slice of american cheese and coffee (I don't give up coffee but drink it with a lot of milk). Lunch is usually corn tortilla with mozzarella cheese or leftovers that we have around (today was pasta). Dinner is iffy - usually by the evening nothing tastes good and being sedentary after dinner makes anything feel gross. I try to eat meat for dinner since I obviously don't eat a lot of it throughout the day. It is hard b/c I do try to steer clear of cold cuts and can't tolerate eggs.
Hope that is somewhat helpful... TUMS are your friend

I found that mixing in some dairy always helped...if you need fruit have it with cottage cheese or yogurt...veggies with ranch dressing...peanut butter was also good for me.
I avoided all juice, soda, coffee (unless I used a good amount of cream), non-creamy salad dressings, etc.
HTH!

Re: Need food help-foods that don't aggravate reflux, that don't stay in your throat all day!
The list above is great, but I need to add, because some things that I really didn't think would bother me did.
pretzels Bagels cream cheese cottage cheese yogurt oatmeal (cream of wheat, cream of rice)
Also, watch combinations of foods . . .
I have it really bad to the point even water makes it worse. I had to take pepcid my entire pregnancy and that only helped a little . . .
You should start a food log and document what you eat and if and when you get the heartburn/reflux.
Here is a list of foods to eat that I tried to work off of- but honestly, I just gave up and just have learned to live with it, hoping it goes when baby comes.
Safe Foods for the Acid Reflux Diet
Food Group Foods With Little Potential to Cause Heartburn Fruit • Apple, fresh • Apple, dried • Apple juice • Banana
Vegetables • Baked potato • Broccoli • Cabbage • Carrots • Green beans • Peas
Meat • Ground beef, extra-lean • Steak, London Broil • Chicken breast, skinless • Egg whites • Egg substitute • Fish, no added fat
Dairy • Cheese, feta or goat • Cream cheese, fat-free • Sour cream, fat-free • Soy cheese, low-fat
Grains • Bread, mult-grain or white • Cereal, bran or oatmeal • Corn bread • Graham crakers • Pretzels • Rice, brown or white • Rice cakes
Beverages • Mineral water
Fats / Oils • Salad dressing, low-fat Sweets / Desserts • Cookie, fat-free • Jelly beans • Red licorice • Potato chips, baked

Whoa! I think every one of my favorite foods is on there.
Guess I won't be eating much!
Funny thing is I need to drink one cup of coffee because of my migraines but on the other hand, I know coffee is very acidic and causes reflux!
Oh, I can't win!
Does this mean DC will come out with a full head of hair?

Thank you so much for the list! I put this in my notebook and I think I will print it out when I go food shopping-I am in the trial and error phase and testing out different food to see what works and what does not.

Re: Need food help-foods that don't aggravate reflux, that don't stay in your throat all day!
i swear..i think im like the enigma out of everyone here..
i cant drink water, but have no problems drinking lemonade, pink lemonade, or water flavored with crystal lite. Even iced coffee/lattes (w.alot of milk) dont upset me too much.
yogurt was always a staple of mine and then with pregnancy its made me sick a few times. I even threw up bread early on. I haven't had a granola bar in months b/c that didnt agree with me either. anything that made me ill i stopped eating for now. Fruits dont bother me much (green grapes do, not red ones), watermelon although seems to make me ill the past few times i ate it. havent had saltine crackers, although Wheathins have helped. Plain pasta with a little butter is good too. Salads with a not so tangy dressing.
No joke..subway sandwiches were easy to get down in the beginning..eggs were ok too.
Im like the opposite of everyone on here.

Small, frequent meals throughout the day as opposed to three big meals helps a lot. Also stick to bland foods. Mashed potato was my best friend!

Mine is also horrible. I find the more plain the food the better. I live with Tums in my pocket. I like toast, plain ceral, milk, bagel (plain), plain chicken, my treat is an Italian Ice when I need something cold and wet. This tends to help. But some days I feel that it does not matter what I eat and still get it bad and it makes me sick and keeps me up at night.

Re: Need food help-foods that don't aggravate reflux, that don't stay in your throat all day!
I think it's kinda dependent on the person too.
I have been ok with cheese sandwiches, eggs, steak, grilled chicken, salads (easy on the dressing) olives, cheeses, potatoes, pasta to a certain extent.
I cannot eat rice at all. I can't drink juice. citrus fruits are out. and now, MOST fruits have been kicked to the curb.
watermelon has been my friend. croissants are ok.
nothing too high in fat. nothing too acidic. nothing too spicy.
nothing to scratchy...my fav whole grain cereals and even certain breads are too much. Oatmeal bread is good.
I eat Life cereal in my greek yogurt in the morning.
have also been baking more...making scones and pound cakes that have little preservatives and such...those sit nicely for the most part. some entenmann's also works in the morning.
small meals also helps.
I just gave up tums for Gaviscon. I doc said it was ok.
what I can tolerate changes from time to time too though. sometimes it's just hit or miss.
it sucks. I feel your pain.

Do you find the Gaviscon to be better? Tums are a joke at this point!
