Need Help.. Grandparent paying too much in school taxes
My DHs grandfather IMO is paying way too much in school taxes. He is close to 80 years old as is paying over 5000 a year. He lives in the Village of Valley Stream
My grandmother was not paying anywhere near that she was paying maybe around 1000 and she lived in the same town as DHs grandfather.
What can be done? He has the STAR and only gets a veteran discount i believe. I told him to go to the town of hempstead and see what they say. I also suggested grieving his taxes.
Anyone have any suggestions?
TIA

Does he have enhanced star? There is additional paperwork that has to be filled out and the requirements are on the web. Also I would look at mynassauproperty.com and compare what your grandfather's house assessment is and what your grandmothers is. Also look at house around your grandfather's house. If you put in the address on mynassauproperty you can see other houses around him.

Re: Need Help.. Grandparent paying too much in school taxes
I'm not sure of the tax laws in your town but I filed an application for my mom the past 2 years since she is disabled and low income. They reduced her school taxes by 50%!!!!
They have something similar for elderly people, here is the link from town of babylon:
LINK
I would check to see if they have something similar in your town and what the filing cut off date is.
It's definitely worth looking into! Good luck....

Is he a veteran of WWII or Korea? WWII will get a bigger discount as well

Re: Need Help.. Grandparent paying too much in school taxes
i looked into this for my parents. he has to make less than $72,000 a year (Which is probable for an elderly person living on Social Security and a pension) for ENHANCED star, which will probably take about $1K at most off.. to qualify as low income, you literally have to make nothing... it's a joke. very, very, very few people actually get their taxes reduced for low-income. what they consider low income for tax reduction purposes is os low, i wouldn't know how a person would be owning a house on LI with that income unless they were getting help from family or something. my parents are in Town of Hempstead also,.... the town taxes aren't even that bad. it's the school taxes that are killing them...and their district isn't even considered good anymore.
