neocate and alimentum question

has anypne switched from neocate to alimentum? i know it is ususally the other way aroung but my son is MISERABLE on neocate. he is gassy and constipated all the time. i just went to a new GI and he said ped def rushed to put him on neocate especially since blood in stool was not visible to eye. he said it would prob not be the right time at this point to switch but i do not think they realize how uncomfortable he is. he screams bloody murder for an hour at a time from gas. gi said he hates neocate b/c it is so gassy. my ds is 4 months and i just want to get him some relief!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: neocate and alimentum question

I honestly dont know much about either formula...

BUT..

A week or so a go I had a client whose DC is allergic to corn. (Something I had never thought/heard about before). I mentioned it to a friend of mine who has older children. She told me that her youngest son was miserable up until he was 6 months old. She tried everything and couldnt get him comfortable. She finally took him to an allergist. The culprit was that most/all formulas contain some kind of corn by product. I dont recall what kind of formula she put him on but he was, indeed, allergic to corn.

I dont know if this is an issue at all for your DS. But I thought I should at least pass this information on to you...

Re: neocate and alimentum question

my dd is on alimentum and the blood in her stool was visible to my eye - not dramatic but tiny red flecks. i do think your ped probably rushed into rx formula. our ped told us to try alimentum first and it worked very quickly. if it didn't work, we were going to move to a rx formula that's amino-acid based, like neocate or elecare. i can't speak to whether it's advisable to switch again right away though. hth.
