New Kitten? PIC added!!
We just got a kitten today! I have never had a cat, DH had cats when he was little. Anyone have any advice about caring for it or toys/items that are necessary? TIA!!
Here is our little guy...

Re: New Kitten?
CONGRATS!!!
He/she will need lots of attention - they are still a baby. Cuddle with it as much as possible. Give it lots of attention, you'll find yourselves with a loving lap cat in no time.
Our baby cried so much the first night, that after an hour of trying to get him to sleep in the basket next to our bed, we put him on our pillows in between us with my arm around him - he passed right out He sleeps with us everynight.
If you both work, leave a blanket in a basket so that it has a warm place to sleep. You'll most likely find them under the blanket - they like coay warm places when they are that small.
Get some toys if you want. Kittens are very curious, so something as simple as a long piece of string will work just as well.

Great advice. I just wanted to add that I would definitely get a scratching post so that your furniture doesn't get ruined. Bring the baby over to it and rub her paws up and down...she'll get the idea. Good luck!

Re: New Kitten?
Get a small litter pan and line it and fill it with litter. Get two dishes, one for food and one for water.
Keep an eye on her in the beginning. Kitties like to roam everywhere.
String and little mouse toys work well when they are that age.
So adorable. I love kittens.
Do lots of cuddling and holding. we let our cats sleep with us. You will find that most cats will sleep with you at least part of the night.

Re: New Kitten?
Everything that has been suggested is great.
But one thing, if you use string as a toy make sure to supervise and never leave your kitten alone with it. If a kitten swallows some string it can cause havoc! Be careful!

Re: New Kitten?
OMGGGGGGGG love it... If you are leaving the kitten alone i would try to leave it in a more contained place, they tend to get into everything and you dont want them getting hurt....
Toys feathers, fake mice, my cat loves my hair scrunchies dont ask... And get a cat scratcher so they dont scratch your furniture......
HAVE FUN

Re: New Kitten?
I agree with all the above and especially the confined spaces. We kepy my cat in the bathroom when we werent home for the first 2 weeks until he got comfortable with us and the house, then we would let him out at night and he would sleep in his bed in our room. then after a while we let him out all the time. Now, he rules the house!!

Re: New Kitten?
awwww congrats!!! Kittens are so much fun
I agree with the scratch post advice...show him/her how to scratch on it. We started it the very first day we got our cat (he was about 8 wks. old) and he uses it every day and has never scratched the furniture!

Re: New Kitten?
Thank you so much for all the advice. He is really young about 4-5 weeks, he was a stray and his mom left. The vet said he looks good though! He did great with the litter box right away. He has been adorable with the girls and the older one thinks he is her own personal doll DH plans on making a scratching post this weekend, otherwise we got the rest of his stuff today. Thanks again!

Re: New Kitten? PIC added!!
OMG! Looks like my first baby did when I got her. Insanely cute. I can't take it!!
I wish we could keep them that teeny tiny!!!
Best of luck with him!!!
I want to second everyone who said confined spaces. When you are not home or sleeping just keep him in a room or small area- when they are that small they can get hurt or into trouble very easily. You can give him free run of the house when you are there to watch him- but when he is alone just keep him in a confined space until he is a bit older.

all the posters made great suggestions...our kittens (now 8 months) love a good old paper grocery bag...although they have a box of toys

Re: New Kitten? PIC added!!
He is so cute!!!!
Do you have a scratch pad or scratching post for him? The sooner you can start that, the better. Our cat uses his every day, we started him on it the same day we adopted him
