Re: New MOMMIES Post your hospital delivery/care experience
Hospital: NORTH SHORE PLAINVIEW
How was your room? Could you get a private room?
Nice, it was a private room with a private bathroom. I didnt ask, but was going too. Ended up getting, just the way it turned out. And Yes you can ask. I recommended it. The other rooms you share with one other person, but the bathroom you share with another room so thats 4 people.. 4 new mommies, messy...
Were you made to feel comfortable?
Yes, the staff was very attentive. Only thing i didnt like was one nurse would come in and turn off my air condition.. I would have to try and get myself up and turn back on..
How were visiting hours handled?
Great, they let my DH stay as long as he wanted too.
Were you brought your baby right away?
Yes, b/c i was bfing.
Were the nurses helpful?
yes, they answered all my questions. Only thing was one nurse kept trying to get me to feed my baby formula, that way she didnt have to bring me my DD.. That pizzed me off!! I kept my ground and she brought me my DD. Even if she was being fed formula, I will be the one feeding her not her.

Re: New MOMMIES Post your hospital delivery/care experience
Could you please post what hospital you delivered at and what your experience was like.
I delivered at carolina's medical center in Charlotte
How was your room? Could you get a private room?
All of the maternity rooms in this hospital are private (they just built a new women's center about 6 months before I delivered. You labor, birth and recover in the same room)
Were you made to feel comfortable?
Yes, very
How were visiting hours handled?
My family was allowed to visit whenever, they were not strict about it
Were you brought your baby right away?
Yes, I had a c-section and I was given my daughter in recovery so I could nurse. She was in my room the whole time except for a few hours the night before I came home, the nurse took her to the nursery so dh and I could rest
Were the nurses helpful?
Yes, some more than others

South Nassau Communities Hospital-Oceanside
How was your room? Could you get a private room? All the rooms at SN are private, brand new renovations done, the rooms are beautiful!!!
Were you made to feel comfortable? Everyone there was amazing, no pressure about BFing, always asked me if I was OK or needed anything.
How were visiting hours handled? I had a ton of visitors. No kids under 12. 1-8 for anyone else.
Were you brought your baby right away? As far as I remember, I was with him for a few minutes right away, then they brought him to me about 1 hour after birth, which was good because I was getting "fixed up" anyway.
Were the nurses helpful? My L&D nurse Lynda was truly amazing. Maternity nurses were nice and very helpful. Obviously some more than others, but no one to complain about.
Could DH stay over? Yes, he could, but there wasn't one of those reclining chairs to sleep on. Although they had them in L&D...
LOVED South Nassau....

I delivered at NS Manhasset.
How was your room? Could you get a private room? Room was terrific. Private for first and for second I had a regular room but no roommate.
Were you made to feel comfortable? Yes, they were excellent
How were visiting hours handled? The nurses were pretty terrific. I have a huge family and they were able to come and go as they wanted. My DH came and went as he pleased. He was there when I woke up and until I went to sleep
Were you brought your baby right away? Yes.
Were the nurses helpful? Absolutely! they were amazing and so accommodating. I even wrote a letter to NSUH commending the nurses and thanking them.
Another note. I have moved out of NY but and Dh and I have been discussing #3 and if/when that time comes, I'd like to have this baby at NS if I can, because of my amazing experience

Re: New MOMMIES Post your hospital delivery/care experience
Could you please post what hospital you delivered at and what your experience was like. WINTHROP
How was your room? Shared room first day with someone. We both bf'd but she decided to do her nite feeding, I opted for them to feed my dd (to sleep!) and her son was bought in at 4am screaming instead of 6am. 2nd day-No roommate.
Could you get a private room? I didnt want one...didnt need the extra expense. Plus I was alone day 2.
Were you made to feel comfortable? Yes
How were visiting hours handled? They were more strict with the evening hours than the daytime. During grandparents time..pretty much anyone was allowed in.
Were you brought your baby right away? Yes, cleaned up and right in my arms she was put. DH held her and then we got a room..within a 1/2 hr she was bought to us again.
Were the nurses helpful? Yes...Always!! They were AWESOME!!
I loved Winthrop and had great doctors and nurses..esp since my Obgyn never made it to deliver my DD.

How was your room? Could you get a private room?
Room was old. Probably my biggest disapointment in the whole experience. You could get a private room but they were pretty expensive. The L&D area though was gorgeous.
Were you made to feel comfortable?
For the most part. My only complaint would be that my feet swelled a lot and when I asked for something to raise them all they had was a pillow and blanket. I needed someone much higher. Other than that anything I asked for was brought to me immeiately!
How were visiting hours handled?
Dads were allowed in from 10-10. Anyone else from 1-8. It was a long day. By the time people left at night I was exhausted!
Were you brought your baby right away?
I had a c-section but they brought him right over after he was cleaned up and DH held him the whole time they closed me up. He also came to visit me in recovery. They gave me the option of feeding him that night (he was born at 11:21pm) but I was so exhausted I let them do it.
Were the nurses helpful? The nurses were amazing. Every last one of them!

North Shore Manhasset
How was your room? Could you get a private room?
my room was nice, I did have a roomate and we shared a bathroom. It was very clean. we could have a private room but I didn't think it was worth it.
Were you made to feel comfortable?Very comfortable, I couldn't have asked for a better experience
How were visiting hours handled? hours were 11 am to 8 pm (too long IMO) but I had swarms of family coming in, only once they got kicked out but otherwise the staff was pretty laid back about it.
Were you brought your baby right away? no, I had DS at 940 AM via C section and did not have him in my room until 4 PM. I am really not sure why. I think I should have called the nurses earlier or sent my DH to go get him, but I didn't think we could do that. I still over this one.
Were the nurses helpful? The nurses were fantastic!! they were so great, Id did not want to leave!
my DH stayed with me every night for 4 nights. also both my roomates DH's stayed. Ihad two roomates bc I was there for 5 days, and both had vag birth
ETC.

Re: New MOMMIES Post your hospital delivery/care experience
Could you please post what hospital you delivered at and what your experience was like. LIJ-LAKEVILLE RD. How was your room? Could you get a private room? I WAS IN A ROOM OF 4 BUT INITIALLY IT WAS JUST 2 OF US. I COULD GET A PRIVATE ROOM BUT DID NOT WANT TO PAY $700.00 A NIGHT.
Were you made to feel comfortable? VERY MUCH SO! How were visiting hours handled? THEY WEREN'T REALLY STRICT ABOUT VISITORS. I THINK AT ONE POINT I HAD ABOUT 8 PEOPLE BEDSIDE. Were you brought your baby right away? YES. Were the nurses helpful? YES. THE NURSES WERE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. etc. MY LABOR WAS GREAT AS WELL. THE RESIDENTS AND NURSES ESPECIALLY WERE SO SUPPORTIVE. IT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE HAVING THEM ALL BY MY SIDE CHEERING ME ON EVERY STEP OF THE WAY, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I HAD NO CLUE IF I WAS PUSHING/DOING IT RIGHT. EPIDURAL WAS PERFECT AS WELL.
ETA: DH COULD'VE PROBABLY STAYED OVER BUT I PERSONALLY DID NOT WANT HIM TO.

Re: New MOMMIES Post your hospital delivery/care experience
St Charles 11/08
How was your room? Could you get a private room? The day I delivered the private rooms were taken, but the maternity ward was very empty (5 people total the second day I was there!) so everyone had a private room! The rooms are pretty nice and there are showers in each room. They have a new meal plan from last time I delivered there...you choose from a menu and call in your lunch and dinner choice; the food was pretty good for a hospital. Breakfast is still a buffet, but I only had oatmeal and fruit each morning.
Were you made to feel comfortable? I loved the nurses in L&D, especially Liz. She delivered both of my daughters. I only met the wonderful anesthesiologist and saw my own doctors, who were great. The maternity nurses were ok overall; some were wonderful and some not so wonderful. They always were willing to give you pain meds, etc. if needed and responded quickly to requests.
How were visiting hours handled? Fathers 10-10; Siblings/Grandparents 2-4pm; 7-8pm open visiting with babies in nursery. They are strict about the 7-8pm hours, but not really with the others. They didn't limit my number of visitors either stay.
Were you brought your baby right away? You are allowed 1 hour from birth with the baby in the delivery room, then they have to go to the nursery for evaluations and bathing. I had the baby back to me in my room by 4:30pm and I delivered at 2:25pm.
Were the nurses helpful? L&D - Great! Maternity - Hit or miss...mostly hit thought!

Re: New MOMMIES Post your hospital delivery/care experience
I delivered at South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside on 9/5/08
How was your room? Could you get a private room?
- my room was gorgeous - the maternity ward is new, i think 3 years old, and the room was large with a table and chairs and a HUGE bathroom with a standing shower. they only have private rooms - it's part of the reason i chose the hospital first and my OB second!
Were you made to feel comfortable?
- the nurses were great. i only had one nurse who had a less-than-stellar bedside manner but that was during my prep in L&D before my c-section. after my c-section the nurses were all spectacular. the ladies at the nurses' station were kind of bitchy but i didn't care about bothering them to get a hold of a nurse.
How were visiting hours handled?
- visiting hours for Dads were all day - there was really no set time for them to arrive/leave that i was told, he got there every day around 10 and stayed until 9 or 10 each night.
visiting hours for everyone else was 12-8, there was no limit on visitors, and the baby was in the room with me all day so i could relax while everyone oohed and ahhed over DS.
Were you brought your baby right away?
- yes, even though i had a c-section, since his apgar scores were fine (9 and 9 i believe) they brought him to me as soon as i was stitched up and in recovery. unfortunately i was shaking very badly from the spinal so i asked them to take him to the nursery while i rested. he went to the nursery around 10am and he was in my room around 1pm (they needed to make sure his temp was back up after his bath).
Were the nurses helpful?
- the nurses were outstanding. they answered all of my questions and were incredibly reassuring. i was having issues BFing and the lactation consultants were helpful, but my nipples were flat and they didn't want me to use a shield so it was frustrating at first. the first night i was there, i could not get DS to latch and i was up all night with him. the second night a nurse noticed that i looked awful and she showed me how to cup-feed DS with formula to help him calm down enough to get some sleep and later latch on better. (cup feeding doesn't cause nipple confusion). i got some much needed sleep and i woke up feeling like a new woman!
my best advice is BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE!! there were a few times i buzzed for a nurse for pain meds and it took forever for them to get to my room. i finally said something to one of the nurses, and it turns out the girls at the nurses desk weren't telling them i had called. she told me that if i hadn't heard anything from them within 1 minutes i needed to call again.
sorry this got so long but i LOVE my hospital and i can't wait to go back!
