Newborn Eating Habits Question

My DD is 3 weeks old today and up until the past few days she was consistently hungry every 4hrs for the same exact same amount of formula. Now it seems she is less hungry during the day, shes eating about 2 1/2oz every 3hrs. and much hungrier at night. At night she's drinking at least 3 1/2oz every 3hrs but sometimes she gets hungry in between for more. Is this normal???? TIA Chat Icon

Re: Newborn Eating Habits Question

I'm pretty sure it is normal. Luckily, Anthony has been pretty consistant, but the ped has told me 2x already, feed him when he is hungry, whatever he wants, whenever he wants. I quote, "he is the boss". You can't overfeed them - if you do, they will simply spit it back up. It sounds pretty normal to me. Anthony eats @5 oz every 4 hrs

Yes, this is normal. DS does the same thing. He eats less during the day much more at night. Sometimes he wants a bottle almost every hour for the few hours before he goes into his crib for the night. I talked to the Dr. about it and he said "babies are supply and demand. They demand and you supply. Feed him when he is hungry." It's frustrating bc I can't seem to get on a schedule with him. I hope things start to become a bit more consistent so I can understand what he needs a bit better.

normal, I was told by doc just feed on demand. sometimes it's annoying bc in the middle of the night, he'll finish his bottle and decide he wants more so I run to heat up his formula!

Re: Newborn Eating Habits Question

newborns aren't regular with many things! I think 3 weeks is also a growth spurt time too.

Re: Newborn Eating Habits Question

Yes...at night I feed her on demand...and she only wakes up once.
The dr said that formula fed babies should eat every 3-4 hours...and DD will eat anywhere from 2-4 oz...it depends.

but yes that is normal.

Re: Newborn Eating Habits Question

My DS is doing this too. During the day he like to eat every 2-3 hours but luckily at night he seems to be able to go 4 hours. I wish I could get him on a schedule, but at this age I'm just happy that he's happy Chat Icon
