Newborn Sleeping Habits
Seems like my little one is a night owl...she sleeps all day and is up for feedings but once 11pm comes shes wide awake until 2-3am (she is up as we speak lol) am I screwed? will she learn to sleep at night eventually? anything I should be doing?
Thanks!

Re: Newborn Sleeping Habits
it's called day/night confusion... if you think about it - the time the baby slept in you was daytime - when you were moving, the fluid 'rocking' the baby...etc.
at night - the baby was most likely active - when you were sitting still, etc....
so most babies come out - sleep confused.
a bit of advice that i'll never forget was to get the baby into direct sunlight for maybe 15 minutes every day (outside sunlight) - it will help set the baby's 'internal clock'.
also - during the day - bright light, tv/radio on - loud voices...
at night - low talking, LOW light, darkness...etc..
the baby will get 'on track' soon...hang in there!

Re: Newborn Sleeping Habits
A nighttime routine could help too. We do dinner then DS gets a bath. He gets a massage, feetie PJs and a book before I nurse him to sleep.

Re: Newborn Sleeping Habits
You might want to try waking him during the day if he has slept for more than 3 hours...
My Dr. had me doing this because DS was sleeping long stretches during the day and he had to gain weight (he was in the Nicu & lost more than 10% of his body weight when he was discharged from the hospital)...

Re: Newborn Sleeping Habits
my ped also recommended waking every 3 hours during the day - i never had to do that, but we did things completely different during the day - swaddling only at night, nighttime sleep was in the crib. daytime sleep was unswaddled in the beginning, in the bouncy or swing, etc. things to help the baby figure out the difference.

ETA: i also only swaddled her at night and didn't allow her to sleep for more than 2 hrs during the day.
