They closed my sons school because of the frigid temps.
Why? Schools are heated. Are there other reasons temps make a difference?
I wonder what stats are of people getting sick because of walking or waiting for a bus though. Im just wondering the actual risk based on facts.
You don't get sick from being out in the cold. Old wive's tale.

I'm guessing it's because of safety - kids waiting on bus stops and students who need to walk to school in dangerously cold temperatures.

news 7 just said schools are open tomorrow
I have to say, that where I live the roads are fine. DH got to work this morning with no problems. Cars flying down my block like it never snowed. My in laws said Bayside was better this morning, but last night was a nightmare. Hoping the kids Saturday activities are still on for tomorrow. DH & I plan to have the kids out from 7 am- 7 pm haha. We need out.

I think it is due to walkers and students waiting at the bus stop. By me, the real feel is -25 F. If you are outside for 5-10 minutes, you can get frost bite. We did not close, we had a 2 hour delay. At 9 am, it felt like -20 F so I guess it was comparatively "warmer"

Many buses won't start in extreme cold. I know that is part of the problem.

news 7 just said schools are open tomorrow
I think some people are forgetting that there is a lot more to consider than just roads. The priority seems to be major roads first and then side streets, where many schools and bus stops are. Another big factor to consider is that the buses need to be cleared off and ready to go, and many districts use bus companies from other areas where conditions might not be as good. Buildings also need to be checked for damage and to make sure they are up and running. Walkways and parking lots need to be impeccable to prevent anyone-student, parent, staff-from injuring themselves.
So yes, roads might be fine from what you are seeing but there is a lot of other stuff that needs to be done before sending students to school, and a lot can't get done in the height of a storm.

OMG my car didn't start the other night and I swear it was from the cold! I was leaving work the day before the storm and it was sputtering and shaking but wouldn't turn over. I called DH and just pictured him having to pick me up and my car being stranded at work for the blizzard and getting plowed in. But he told me to gun the gas and when I did, it suddenly turned over. I feel like it was so cold the fuel injectors froze or something. It wasn't getting gas it seemed.
I am DONEEEEEEEEEEEE with winter.

The school has heat but you have to commute outside in negative freezing weather to get to the school. I mean for my DS it’s easy because he goes from a heated car straight to heated school but I’m sure plenty of people don’t have that luxurious commute. Plus some roads were icy.
Have you ever waited outside in the freezing cold for a bus? You don’t get sick but it’s painful. I remember in HS commuting one morning (2+hrs) in the cold after a storm and it took me so long that by the time I got there I was frozen in tears. My 3rd period teacher felt so bad for me.

Exactly and then when something happens parents will complain why schools werent closed in the first place. My cousin thought it was dumb the NYC mayor was saying to stay indoors but yet the schools were opened. I guess you can’t win either way.

Re: news 7 just said schools are open tomorrow
I think it was a good idea to close schools today. I was driving around in TOB and TOH today, and another day is really needed to clear these roads. I do think TOH did a better job, but still, the side streets are a mess. I’m used to driving around in snow in the Alps, but there were many places where there was only one lane. Better safe than sorry.
