Next dumb anxious question about bottles, weaning and all that jazz...
I know I've asked about this recently but in regards to cutting from four bottles to three a day... so you really go six hours (if not more) between bottles? That just seems like such a long time to me! Are you nervous about the baby being thirsty? Do you give water? When do you give second bottle of day? After lunch? Do you give snacks during the day? Thanks for indulging all my craziness

Re: Next dumb anxious question about bottles, weaning and all that jazz...
My DS is still on 4 bottles, but I'm trying to give more water during the day. I would say definitely offer water/juice throughout the day. And I give crackers or cheerios throughout the day. I need to start more on fruit etc for snacks though. I'm actually worried b/c now, finalyl, my DS seems to like the bottle and formula, so nervous about the transition to milki and hoping to go right to the sippy with it - yikes!

DS gets 3 bottle most days. One when he gets up, then an hour later he gets breakfast. I usually give him a snack before his nap and then his bottle..He gets lunch when he wakes up and then juice/water until dinner. Then he gets a bigger bottle before bed. It was hard int the beginning but he is now drinking less and eating more solids. It doesn't seem to phase him.

We gave water during the day if she was thirsty. They tend to readjust their schedules around it.

Re: Next dumb anxious question about bottles, weaning and all that jazz...
Our ped told us to do this I freaked out, ds freaked out, I tried to give less, spread it out didn't work made us crazy.
I gave up. The next day ds refused his dinner bottle, every day refused one of his bottles on his own. I give him water when ever he wants it. Its in a sippy where he plays he just sips on it all day, as I sip on mine.
I think most days he refuses the one with dinner cause he eats a ton when DH comes home. So I plan not to even offer that one.

Re: Next dumb anxious question about bottles, weaning and all that jazz...
DD started sleeping through her 3rd bottle - she shifted her nap schedule a bit - so we dropped it. She gets a cup in the morning, a cup with lunch, and a cup with dinner that carries over into bedtime (we're off bottles). I offer her water during the day, sometimes with a splash of apple juice - she doesn't drink very much of it though it makes me feel better! Remember, they are getting water from their food too. Good luck!

Can I ask you why you want to get rid of it? I don't think I would have but for losing a time to give it to her. Unless it's a pain for your schedule, why bother changing it up.

I don't necessarily "want" to get rid of it but ped and GI told me that at a year, he should be on three bottles, not four.

Re: Next dumb anxious question about bottles, weaning and all that jazz...
You're making me go back 2 years...but for you I will try!
Lucas never went to 3 bottles. He, just like Gregory, had four 6oz bottles. Then we started replacing formula bottles with milk sippy cups. He got the sippy all day until he got the hang of it. We intended to move to 3 times per day but in the end we got to where we are now. He asks and we give.
I'll try to find some old posts and see if I had anything posted and if my memory is correct. I'll send them to you.
Not that I had any clue what I was doing but to see what someone else was doing sometimes helps.

How many total ounces do they have in mind? I would not expect the number of bottles to matter. If the ounces for 4 bottles are too much per their directions, I would up the food first and see if he starts drinking less. Otherwise, it just seems like unnecessary upheaval to me. Also, my strong suspicion is that if you move to cups during the day, he'll probably decrease his quantity a bit anyway - Lucy did (not dramatically but definitely some).

Marci - you know his quantity is all over the place - one day he'll have 15 oz over FOUR bottles and then next day 26 - although it's typical in the low 20's. Both dr's said between 16-24 oz. He doesn't eat a lot either. My concern is that he usually still drinks a crap bottle in the morning - I'm worried about him not making the 16 oz in three bottles.

Lucy varies from day to day too.
If he's in the right range (16-24 oz), why would the ped care how many bottles it's in? I might push back and press him to give you a reason for this.

My guess would be that at a year old the focus should be food and not bottles which is why they want you to cut back.

So I asked his babysitter to space out the bottles today and we'll see what happens

not only that, the reason is when you switch to milk, you want them used to drinking less... because milk has too much calcium ... calcium is good, but too much interferes with iron absorption and that's a big problem with kids today because they don't eat leafy greens or enough dark meats

and too much milk will cause them to become anemic as well...
oh I also wanted to add that maybe you can still give him the 4 bottles BUT put less milk in them so he is in fact only 3 but at 4 separate times..
do NOT drive yourself crazy.. so long as milk isn't his only source of nutrition and you are giving him a whole bunch of other nutrients, I think that's TOTALLY fine.. My kids are BIG milk drinkers.. I had to cut back with my son's drinking because it got to a point where that was ALL he wanted.. GL
