Re: Nightly Poll: What was worse for you? Blackout or Transit Strike?
The Blackout was definitely more annoying for me.
I was definitely affected with the Transit Strike... but it was bearable. I did a lot of walking yesterday. Dealt with a lot of traffic on Tuesday and Today.
But the Blackout was a total mess. I was at work when it happened (4pm). Since I am the head network IT guy at my job... I ended up staying at my job (overnight) to wait for the power to come back on so i can power back up the network.
I wasn't able to go home because they closed the bridges and tunnels (if I remember correctly).
It was also hot as hell that day... and the AC went out at my job so i had to sleep in the office and man was it HOT and nasty.
Plus... I was one of those people that didn't get power back till 3pm the following day (East Midtown Manhattan). Not fun.
The transit strike was bad. But I have driven to work on days that were actually worse traffic wise then I saw this week.

While the transit strike has affected me mildly, the blackout affected the whole eastern seaboard. It affected driving EVERYWHERE, homes everywhere, everyone's jobs. No A/C, no cell phones, no cooking, no traffic lights, no televisions, no computers, nothing!!! There weren't any alternatives or warning.

Blackout... i was in ny for that one.
i had to drive home from work without any lights... or cops directing traffic (not fun trying to cross 347 like this!).
Also, the next night we got engaged, and DH had to change plans last minute because we were supposed to go into the city, but our resturant was closed for the rest of the weekend.

Re: Nightly Poll: What was worse for you? Blackout or Transit Strike?
OK, I'll take the other side. I think the transit strike was worse for me.
When the blackout happened, nobody expected it. Yeah it sucked, but we just made it work. In fact, many people drank and partied in the streets and had fun! Plus, it was warm out. And you kind of knew that it was going to be fixed as quickly as possible - and you weren't expected to go to work the next day!
With the strike, the anticipation alone was agony - every day, will they or won't they. Then when they did, the waking up super early to get in sucked, as did the long lines, annoying delays, very crowded LIRR trains, and FREEZING cold hour long walks. For three days!

Blackout. The walk, the heat, no electricity, the mass CONFUSION of the people and the unkown. BLAH, never again please. Transit strike was cake compared to that.

Re: Nightly Poll: What was worse for you? Blackout or Transit Strike?
Blackout- I was having a lot of difficulty breathing because of my asthma and had no power to plug in my nebulizer. I really thought about calling an ambulance. DH and I were still a fairly new couple at this point and he was stuck at his place in Manhattan.

Re: Nightly Poll: What was worse for you? Blackout or Transit Strike?
Neither one was really that bad for me, but the blackout was much worse for DH. We were living in Little Neck, so he had to walk from his office (Park & 49th) to the 59th St. bridge, walk over the bridge and then all the way home since I didn't have much gas in my car and couldn't go pick him up. It was awful, I felt so guilty that I hadn't filled up on my way to work that day.
This time he only had to walk from Penn to Park & 49th, so it was nothing in comparison!

Re: Nightly Poll: What was worse for you? Blackout or Transit Strike?
Its simple for me
Blackout-1 night of hot weather
Transit Strike-3 days of the city in mass chaos. Driving 3 hours a day to get home from work. Waking up much earlier than I do to beat the crowds.

The strike.
During the blackout, even though I had to walk over the bridge and all the way to Woodside Queens to get a train to Jamaica...at least it was warm out and I wasn't 5 mos. pregnant.

Re: Nightly Poll: What was worse for you? Blackout or Transit Strike?
Blackout! I don't work in the city, strike didnt effect me. Blackout was difficult. I was at work, with children, who were hot and cranky. Parents coming in and giving us all different versions of "Oh, maybe there was an accident" Or maybe this, maybe that...No one knew. Got in my car and was nervous to drive home (to lake grove) no traffic lights. Drove to my parents. Couldnt find my husband. Thank Goodness he showed up @ my parents an hour or 2 later. He had this "feeling" I wouldnt go all the way home!

the strike for me. It was hard, I am so off schedule, DH is exhasted. Work was so hard, none of my bankers cars were able to get them to airports/meetings.
During the blackout, I went home, took a little longer to get there. Once I was there, we got a couple of six packs and had a mini block party. It was a fun night.

Blackout...scared by myself, walking in the dark for 20 blocks, no phone, the heat, no way out and no way of letting anyone no where I was, fainting at Penn Station when I finally got there, dealing with the red cross, ughh, literally one of the worst days of my life!!!

Totally MISSED the blackout, was in Florida. I didn't miss 9/11 tho, and had to walk allt he way home.
This Strike really did BLOW-I cant complain to much tho, the ony time it took a long time to get to work was weds morning-3.5 hours and gettin home today-3 hours. Had to pick up/drop off my father both times.

Re: Nightly Poll: What was worse for you? Blackout or Transit Strike?
hmm, tough one.
I think the blackout, b/c I wasn't prepared for it--I couldn't get home at all. It was so hot, I walked in the dark to a friend's apartment, she wans't home, my cell was dead. . .I couldn't get in touch with DH who was in Westchester. . .when I got home 24 hours later, I still didn't have power.
The strike only doubled my commute, hurt my feet & cause me to cancel dinner plans 1 night.
The only thing that was worse was that it was 3 days long.
ETA, although I am not a fan of winter, this was much better walking weather! There is nothing like being sweaty & not having a change of clothes.

Yes i definitely noticed this. I actually didn't mind the walking (even in this cold) because I wasn't dripping of sweat when I got to my destination.
