Nikon D40 mommies (UPDATED WITH ANOTHER QUESTION)

Can you please tell me what accessories you purchased with your camera. I bit the bullet and bought one today. I am not going to get the zoom lens right now due to money constraints but what other accessories are necessary?

TIA

UPDATED question

So I was looking on line for the filters and I saw this one...it comes with 3. DO I need all 3 or should I just get the UV filter?

TIA

Yay!!!!! You'll love it!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I dropped mine this weekend and damaged it, I had to send it in for repair and it will be gone for 2-8 weeks...I'm seriously in mourning that it's gone already Chat Icon

The only things I bought were filters (I got 2, 1 for each lens, so you'd only need 1 now). It protects the lens from dirt, etc. They're cheap, like less than $20 I think. I believe my brand is Quantaray b/c that's what my camera store has...I don't have it in front of me right now to give you more info on it.

I also got this book which people raved about, but I have yet to really use it Chat Icon

I don't have a D40 but bought my mom all of the accessories for her camera.

Most important:
UV filter - to protect the lens ~$20. I got a Hoya.

Other stuff:

Better memory card - I think I got her a 4GB.

Extra battery - so you have an extra one fully charged at all time

Camera bag

Other cool accessories:
Remote control Flash
Side strap

Love my remote control, my little tripod, my external flash and I'm going to look for a handstrap. I also need a bigger bag now since I have a few lenses. I agree also with the Digital Field Guide. I have one for my D50 and love it!

Re: Nikon D40 mommies

Not to hijack the post (sorry Stephanie!)-- but what is the external flash benefit? I have a tough time with lighting, would this benefit me?

Re: Nikon D40 mommies

I have the book/field guide above

Remote (but you need to know that you can only use it if you face the camera)

tripod: only way to get pics of all three (DH, DS and me) with either the timer and now the remote so I have all the time in the World to pose a pic

UV filter

I have a camera bag that can accomodate a longer lense if I need to

"travel" bag that fits the contour of the camera when I can't take the big bag. Love it!

ETA: not a Nikon accessory but I had to buy an external hard drive. I was crashing my laptop with all the pics. An SLR is addictive. The pics are so great that I take pics all the time.

I don't own a D40 but I would highly recommend a filter for your lens, a spare battery, and an additional high speed memory card (you don't want all your eggs in one basket) as most necessary. Anything else can wait. Save your money for the goodies later on! Chat Icon

Re: Nikon D40 mommies (UPDATED WITH ANOTHER QUESTION)

So far I only have 1 filter. A UV filter for $12.

There are plenty of filters for different "effects".

I am just not at that level yet. The basic UV filter is fine for me right now.

Per my photography class last night, only buy 1 filter.

These are the ones he indicated:

UV
1A
Haze
Clear (this one is the most expensive)

He also said to consider a rubber collapsible shade to protect the lens.

Although the polarizer filter does some cool stuff, it's not necessary. You'll be fine with the UV filter.
