No Children in RE's Waiting Room
When I went to my RE's office today, there was a new sign that said (along these lines): "Due to the sensitive nature of our practice, please make childcare arrangements for your appointments."
I was just curious as to everyone's thoughts on this.
For me, it does not bother me if there is a child in the waiting room and in the 7 months that I have seen my RE, it has been pretty rare that I have seen a child. Every time I have seen one, I have always liked to believe that they were a product of the RE's practice! Also, knowing how often everyone needs to go for monitoring, bloodwork, etc., I have to imagine that it could be difficult to find childcare.
On the other hand, I can completely understand why someone would be upset with a child in the waiting room.
Just curous as to other's thoughts on this! I also was not sure if most practices had this policy.

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
i think its considerate of them considering most pple are there b/c they are having difficulties conceiving. Its hard enough to have to see an RE, nevermind be around a waiting room full of children.
I wouldnt be offended..

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
I'm not offended, in fact, my RE's office has toys in the waiting room.
But what bothered me was the last RE I went to shared an office with an OB's office and I had to sit in the waiting room/billing office with women who were pregnant and showing. On a normal day it didn't bother me, but after my 2 m/c's it bothered me alot. But it was my problem. By the way, it was not why I changed RE's either.

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
Honestly it doesnt bother me at all when people bring their kids. I agree with Kristin...I'd like to think the child might be a product of their services so it makes me feel a little more confident in the practice.

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
I was never offended by seeing children. But, when I went back after I had my DS I felt weird brining him and I told this to the receptionists when they asked why I didn't bring him. They told me they'd LOVE to see him and so did the nurses. They traveled this journey with me and wanted to see him.
BTW..which dr's office posted the sign, if you don't mind me asking?

See now thats ridiculous!!!!! That would have made me so uncomfortable too.

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
When I was seeing a RE, I did not like seeing children in the waiting room, especially babies. It was too painful at the time. JMO! I think your doctor's policy is a good one.

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
This past week I saw my RE for the first time and a woman was there with her DD in the waiting room. She apologized to me- and I told her not to worry because I had a DD as well but she was with grandma. She told me she always felt bad b/c when she saw children in the waiting room in the past, it really brought her down.
When I went in for my hysteroscopy, my mom waiting with DD in the car b/c I felt funny bringing her in.

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
It never really bothered us - but like others have said, our RE and the nurses asked us to come back with the twins. We may do it one day this summer or spring, but will work with her to try to plan a time when the place is not that busy, maybe at the end of the day or something along those lines.
While it didn't bother us, it's totally understandable how it may impact someone else. You never know what someone else is going through in the waiting room on that particular day, so we would never want to contribute to any sadness that might be already occurring.

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
I've seen kids in the waiting room before.
Overall, it doesn't bother me. I like it when they're newborns being paraded around, somewhat less so if they're waiting.

Thats funny cuz I went there back in September for a consult and I had no one to watch DD. I asked them if it was OK for me to bring her and they said yes. DH ended up waiting in the car with her though. Personally it doesn't bother me but I could totally see how it could bother someone. I agree with it.

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
At my RE - RMA of NJ, I don't recall there being a sign but it was mentioned in the paperwork to be sensitive to others. Sometimes, esp during early morning monitoring, I would see ladies with toddlers..it didn't bother me but I could see how it could bother some people. But I mean, me for example, after I have my first child, if and when I go back to the RE, let's say day care isn't open yet - I don't have family nearby - what can I do but bring him / her?

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
I don't mind seeing kids there and I agree with PP that it gives me hope that they are the success stories.
I hope to bring a kid with me in a year or two should I be lucky enough to ever graduate to # 2.

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
I was at RMA of NJ and there were days when it was difficult for me to see kids there.
I understood though, and didn't mind. Most of them would wait out in the hallway until they were called.
What was worse for me was when women would come out flaunting sonograms.
I understand they were excited, but that was REALLY hard to take.

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
I could remember feeling upset when ever I saw a baby no matter where it was.. I think the policy is a good one.. I just would feel there has to be some considerations to the rules.. ie: a mom who is having a problem conceiving her 2nd or more child and has no sitter or day care for #1.. She deserves a pass on that one..

Same here, and same RE... however I did notice that in the main office and in the office I sometimes went to for monitoring, they did have a sign posted up on the counter by the receptionists. It never really bothered me to see kids there, and like Lauren said, they usually waited out in the hall until they were called. It was very hard for me though to see the women flaunting their sonograms. I remember once having my blood drawn while I was going through my m/c and the woman next to me was also having hers done, but she had already had her sono done and she was showing the lab tech. It was all I could do to keep it together without having a breakdown. Once I got pregnant, I always put the pictures in my purse before walking out. For me, it was more out of respect for what other couples there might be going through on that particular day.

It never bothered me. It gave me hope. I do see how it could be painful for others. I wanted to bring Abby back to see the staff at NSUH, but when I do, I will be sure to be mindful of my timing and call in advance.

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
It always made me sad....
It doesn't bother me that much now...most of the time, but on days when I know bad news is coming its like a knife in my heart
And, sometimes it makes me angry. Not when I see a mother with her child, but when I see FULL families there in the waiting room...mommy, daddy, grandma, grandpa, and nanny in tow...that pisses me off to no end. Have some freaking compassion

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
I know its good to see kids there since they are most likely a product of the practice's services. My place does not have a sign stating they should not be brought in. In fact, the nurses ooh and ahh all over the kids and have no compassion for the other patients in that regard.
I do not think they should be there. If ever I am blessed enough to have a child, I will never bring them to the office. I can't even explain how heartbreaking it is. I am in that office because I cannot have kids so why would I want them thrown into my face? It's enough I can't go to Target without crying but I would like to know I am "safe" at the RE office.

Re: No Children in RE's Waiting Room
I go to RMA in the city also. I saw that sign last week and there was a woman there with her toddler daughter. The kid was being fussy and drawing a lot of attention. It's funny because I noticed the sign after seeing the little girl and wondered if it was always there, I guess not. It didn't bother me but I glanced around and almost every woman was looking at the kid, and their looks seemed sad. I think its a lot for some to deal with.

I have to say this is exactly how I feel.
The few times I have seen children in waiting area, there is a big scene with the child crying and the mother and child become the center of the waiting area. When it gets to that point, I feel it is rude considering what people are there for.

What people are there for is to have a kid.
Hopefully each of us one day will have a kid that will sometimes need to be taken to dr appointments with us.
I can't believe the same crowd that wants kids so badly gets so bent out of shape when they see others with their kids or learn others are pregnant.
How many of you will hide your kids from site you don't upset those TTC?
