No more Halloween?
My child's school is having a "fall celebration". This irks me til no end. Let's face it - it's happening on October 30... Why that date? Maybe cause a month of Fall has gone by? NO Cause it's the day before Halloween silly!!
I get respecting diversity but this is so silly it's almost an insult to those that may not celebrate

It has roots in paganism and Christianity.
There are some more conservative sects of religions that don't celebrate. Jewish? Korean Christian not sure what sect? You can't please everyone but just changing the name I just don't get it.
If I have to find childcare on religious holidays that I don't celebrate I want my kid to celebrate Halloween!!
We are in NYC schools btw

Re: No more Halloween?
It hasn't been called a "Halloween or Christmas" party in the schools for I would say at least the last 12 years that my kids have been in school. Holiday parties they are called now and I agree, it is ridiculous.

Re: No more Halloween?
I had a friend in grade school that was not allowed to trick or treat or go to Halloween parties. He mother said it was the day of the devil. They were some sect of Christianity.

No more Halloween?
mmmmmmmm i don't think it would bother me.
it makes it so everyone is included at least, which can't be a bad thing.
I knew a kid or two growing up who had no birthday celebrations or halloween celebrations. One time a girl had to read a different book (because the book we read had some witch-y stuff in it or something?). I always felt badly for them in a way.
I'm not a fan of everything having to be PC but...this is one of my pet peeves:
I can't stand the people who say "It's MERRY CHRISTMAS. NOT happy holidays!" (or anyone with that stupid bumper sticker). Umm...not everyone celebrates Christmas...I can see saying it on xmas eve and the actual day of Christmas, but if you're saying it on Dec 8, and you *INSIST* on saying that just to prove your point, you're just an asshole in my eyes.
When I say "Happy Holidays" it's not me trying to be PC..it's me being inclusive to everyone and realizing that what I follow in my life isn't what others do..and my own beliefs/followings aren't more important than others.

Yes one of my BF was Jehovah's Witness. But nobody changed anything for her back then and she didn't feel bad.

i agree - if someone said happy Hanukkah to me, I wouldn't care.
but you know those people that insist on JUST saying their specific greeting and they say it all month? that's what bugs me. If you're insisting to say Merry Christmas on the 8th night of Hanukkah, that's a little disrespectful. Just give a blanket "happy holidays" on certain dates, ya know? that's what I mean.
Bill O'Reilly would likely tell a Rabbi "Merry Christmas" and I would find that disrespectful, ya know?

Agreed. The other thing is that there are no other holidays at this time it's clearly Halloween

No more Halloween?
they are probably just playing it safe. I agree it does get out of hand at times.
I said the word "indian" recently to my 2nd grader, who barely knew what I was talking about. I was referencing a costume I saw online - but he looked at me like I had 6 heads. It's Native American now.
at the end of the day, kids don't care what it's called. They know what it is, they know Halloween is around the corner. They probably just see it as a parade, punch and candy at school. :)

No more Halloween?
It doesn't bother me having Fall parties (the kids are still allowed to wear costumes) or Holiday/Winter Parties. That was it is inclusive to everyone. What does bother me is that they want to erase every mention of every holiday in schools. I use to love parents coming in making potato latkes and us making gingerbread men for christmas. Now they are not allowed to do either. We even had a parent complain because they watched the movie Elf and it had Santa in it. I also had a parent complain because I put a clip art of an ornament on a PTA flyer for the Holiday Boutique at school. It was too Christmasy! Maybe people should be embracing other traditions instead of pretending they do not exist. Teach my kids about Kwanza or Chinese New Year. I would love it.

I get that and that's fine. And I get that ultra orthodox don't celebrate thanksgiving. But in a public school all or nothing (which I know is impossible).

I agree. It should be all. I want my girls to learn about all holidays, religions, etc. if not, that's where ignorance comes in. It's about acceptance. This just nursery school right now,.shes 2

Re: No more Halloween?
I would be annoyed if my child went to Public school and that was the case. All this PC stuff is so annoying. Alright already...
I find it ironic that my son goes to Catholic school and they have a Halloween party on the weekend for the kids, as well as a Halloween Pageant parade for Pre-K to K.

When I was little I went to catholic school and we did the menorah and made dredals and sang the song. We learned about kwanza too. Like why can't they learn several different things? I can still remember leaving about Halloween and its roots.

No more Halloween?
So if certain kids aren't permitted to celebrate a holiday on Oct. 31, why are they permitted to attend a celebration for a not-holiday? What are they celebrating? And if they are not attending/celebrating why can't the holiday be called by it's proper name?
I'm not asking anyone to rename Passover "Spring Holiday" so I can celebrate it.

Re: No more Halloween?
I work with several Jehovah's witnesses. They refuse to partake in a Christmas party/luncheon or any holiday themed event, yet don't seem to have a problem accepting our annual CHRISTMAS bonus.

That's my point. Why change the name in this case since it's so obvious the day before Halloween. it's so silly. I wonder if it makes those few parents that may complain feel better?
