If you call me a c u next Tuesday I would get offended.
If you told me my DD was an ugly child I would get offended
If you wished me a Happy Hanukkah and I celebrate Christmas, I would not get OFFENDED.
I am a Yankee fan. Am I offended by all the LETS GO METS stuff on FB and in the media, etc? Should we ban talk of a sports team because others who are not fans of that team can't participate?
I think offended is just getting overused!
Everything "offends" people. Come on.

I work with several Jehovah's witnesses. They refuse to partake in a Christmas party/luncheon or any holiday themed event, yet don't seem to have a problem accepting our annual CHRISTMAS bonus.
See, I would be annoyed if it was actually called a Christmas bonus and not a year-end bonus or whatever. In situations where there are multiple holidays/occasions all occurring at around the same time, it doesn't hurt to be more inclusive, but could be alienating to be less inclusive.
I completely agree.
Well that's my company. And that's what they call it. The irony is that JW's refuse to eat off a red/green Plate, and throw out the poinsettia plants and all holiday themed goodies we get from vendors, but this is specifically called a Christmas bonus, and they are ok with that. They use their position when it suits them. I see it all the time.

I had a friend in grade school that was not allowed to trick or treat or go to Halloween parties. He mother said it was the day of the devil. They were some sect of Christianity.
Yes one of my BF was Jehovah's Witness. But nobody changed anything for her back then and she didn't feel bad.
I had friends who were born again Christians and were not allowed to trick or treat or celebrate Halloween. Their mom would keep them home on that day. At my dd preschool they still talk about and celebrate the holidays and talk about traditions all around the world. I like that my dd is exposed to other cultures.

It hasn't been called a "Halloween or Christmas" party in the schools for I would say at least the last 12 years that my kids have been in school. Holiday parties they are called now and I agree, it is ridiculous.
Really? You think it's ridiculous for there to be a holiday party instead of just a Christmas party?
No I think it is ridiculous that people can't say Happy Halloween or Merry Christmas or sitting Indian style or anything that is not PC anymore.

DH's company has always referred to it as the "Xmas bonus". Who cares what they call it, money is money.
Something like this is a perfect example of why I feel as a society we've become entirely too sensitive, politically correct, and honestly............kind of annoying. How hypersensitive to actually care what they call a bonus. I'm just amazed at what upsets, bothers, or offends people these days. Call it a "year end you, you did a great job, and everyone is equal and appreciated" bonus for all I care............I'm cashing the check no matter what it's called. And I bet you are too!
Nowadays, there is too much time is being spent worrying about how EVERY, SINGLE person on the planet is going to react to something that is said or done. Everyone is so caught up in not offending, saying the right thing, and worrying about everyone that I find so many people (in an attempt to be PC and sensitive to everyone) are just a bunch of self righteous a$$holes who think they are better than everyone else. How is that a better society??? How is that a more tolerant and kind society???
In general, people need to lighten up. Learn to roll with things, see the humor in life, and not take everything so seriously ALL the time. The last thing we need is a whole new host of catchy little phrases so we don't offend anyone, someone getting pi$$ed off because a person says Merry Christmas on December 8th...........at least they are taking the time to be kind and even talk to to you, and worrying about what we call every celebration...........does calling it a "fall" party somehow make it any different than calling it a "Halloween" party?? Changing the "word" doesn't change what it is. This kind of stuff is so insanely petty. WHO CARES??!!!
We have become an overly PC, ultra-sensitive society lately where even the most innocuous thing can set someone off. It's just craziness. What's happened to the world??

Oh give me a break - I'm Catholic - I was the only girl in the Soririty house that wasn't Jewish - You know what? I leanred 500 things about Jewish religon, family traditions, interesting stories ........I celebrated the holidays with them, helped them cook, learned their grandma's slang etc. - Things I never would have known or learned or ENJOYED if I wasn't allowed to be exposed to them.
I didn't freaking convert for God's sake! I wasn't scarred for life - I learned about my friends, I respected their beliefs, their traditions, their families - and I had a good time !!
Their parents didn't freak out when I cooked sauce & meatballs for the house on Sundays, or put up a Christmas tree during finals, or made spiked egg nog for a mixer, or played Christmas music -
Everyone is SO overly hypersensitive about this stuff - and the kids are totally oblivious. it's the ADULTS that make everything a huge issue.
Exactly and it is the newer generation of parents who I can't get where they learned this from.

Re: No more Halloween?
I think it is to be more all inclusive than politically correct. Jehovahs witnesses and Jews might not send their kids to a Halloween party - this ensures that all kids get a chance to participate in a fun celebration without any religious or holiday connotations attached. I don't see the big deal.

WHO would get offended by Halloween???
Definitely jehovah witnesses
Not offended, but the following people do not "celebrate" or acknowledge Halloween:
Some Jews Some Christians Muslims
Kids still want to be apart of things. This allows them to.

It doesn't bother me having Fall parties (the kids are still allowed to wear costumes) or Holiday/Winter Parties. That was it is inclusive to everyone. What does bother me is that they want to erase every mention of every holiday in schools. I use to love parents coming in making potato latkes and us making gingerbread men for christmas. Now they are not allowed to do either. We even had a parent complain because they watched the movie Elf and it had Santa in it. I also had a parent complain because I put a clip art of an ornament on a PTA flyer for the Holiday Boutique at school. It was too Christmasy! Maybe people should be embracing other traditions instead of pretending they do not exist. Teach my kids about Kwanza or Chinese New Year. I would love it.
Ugh dreading DS entering public school next year if this is the way it is. I remember growing up, and my experience teaching, that parents were welcomed to come and speak about their traditions and teach us. That is how I learned about other cultures. So far our local public schools do a Halloween parade, but the dance is called a Harvest dance. They do have breakfast with Santa and breakfast with the Easter bunny. I hope this doesn't change.
My son's school has Halloween parades where the kids wear their costumes - so it is not everywhere!

Because pretending that we're all the same is NOT the same as accepting everyone's differences.
I am not sure who this is directed to, but I will respond. I agree completely, but i think in neutral settings like schools, calling events "Fall" parties or "Winter" boutiques at least has all the differences feeling included.

Public school is not the place to be learning about religion. If you want your children to learn about religion and holidays, teach them.

I didn't ONLY say "holidays" - I said cultures. Its neither here nor there for me as we intend to send our child to Catholic School anyway.
IMO its silly that we pretend in school none of these holidays exist, but then kids have off for a variety of religious holidays.

Re: No more Halloween?
There is nothing wrong with learning about world religions in public school. Its not like you're teaching them to WORSHIP, you're just giving them the facts on how/what other people around the globe practice religion, and I think its incredibly closely related with history in general.

No more Halloween?
See, my nephews school, it's called a harvest festival today - kids were asked to dress up as a storybook character, so it takes out the "halloween" and "halloween costume" element and puts it in a more neutral setting.

You cannot learn about world history without also learning about religion. The two go hand in hand. Schools are not teaching people what to believe or how to worship, but teaching about religion within the context of history, you cannot separate the two. But that's a whole other topic.

Re: No more Halloween?
We are Jewish and are happily going to a Halloween party. My feeling is, if I go to your country, and the custom is for women to wear a head scarf or long skirt I will happily wear it to adhere to your customs because I am a guest in your country. But if you are coming to my country, then I expect you to adhere to my customs. My customs are celebrating Halloween and thanksgiving as these are American holidays. And I say Merry Christmas, happy hanukkah, and happy holidays. People are way too offended over trivial stuff these days. No one is making fun of you by wearing a witch costume if you are Wiccan. Rather, they are saying I like and appreciate this. That is why I am fine with someone dressing up as a Hasidic Jew or a priest for Halloween too.
