Because pretending that we're all the same is NOT the same as accepting everyone's differences.

I am not sure who this is directed to, but I will respond. I agree completely, but i think in neutral settings like schools, calling events "Fall" parties or "Winter" boutiques at least has all the differences feeling included.

I don't have children in school, but I remember that when I was in school I'd love learning about (ok mostly just eating the food of lol) different cultures and holidays. Its a shame that its all glossed over now instead of having it ALL embraced.

Public school is not the place to be learning about religion. If you want your children to learn about religion and holidays, teach them.

I completely disagree with this. I want my kids to appreciate all religions and cultures. If you shut them out, then they become something other, to be feared. Showing cultures is not the same thing as saying you have to believe in them.

Yes. Learning about other religions and cultures I think is great and also does have to do with so many aspects of history. Wars, treaties, and governments have all been intertwined with religions over the course of mankind. I think learning about them encourages open minds and acceptance.

just wondering...do they want the kids to dress up in costume for the party? maybe that is why they called it a fall celebration...so that there are no costumes?

I think the whole politically correct thing in our culture has gone WAY too far

Agreed. I am known for being ultra conservative on here. But it is so ridiculous. I got pissed when I saw someone with a Holiday tree. Give me a break. It's a Christmas tree. If someone told me Happy Hannukah, I wouldn't be offended. I would say back "Merry Christmas." But now they are going after Halloween? Ridiculous. Best parts of my childhood is Christmas, Halloween, and all Holidays. Learning about culture and different traditions. Why get rid of everything and not have everyone being tolerant and respectful of what they celebrate? Why be offended? I don't get it

No more Halloween?

I just had to go back and look at my emails to see what the school called the events on their flyers.

We are having a FALL COSTUME PARADE on Friday and a HARVEST FESTIVAL on Thursday night.

Funny thing is it's been that way for years and I guess I'm just noticing now.

Re: No more Halloween?

I am enjoying all things a-changin', evolving. Society as a whole is changing, and this is one more thing. But I am all for it.

The mischief, mayhem & tricking part doesn't sit as well with me after having kids. There's enough evil in the world for them, I'm ok with the evil-scary part becoming an antiquated tradition of this season.

I am, however, over 'pumpkin-ing all the things'.

Re: No more Halloween?

My kids school calls it a fall festival Bc they don't allow scary costumes or face masks. If you dress up, it has to be a character from a book. They also use it as a parade to "walk out on drugs". Candy/cupcakes etc is not allowed at school etc. it's so many rules, My town also only allows TOT from 6-8 on Friday the 30th. It's as if they are trying to eliminate the holiday all together.

Re: No more Halloween?

My daughters' schools have Halloween parties, and my older one has a Fall Festival too. I work in a NYC high school and we have a Halloween parade - and everyone from the freshmen to the principal participate.

We are Jewish and are happily going to a Halloween party. My feeling is, if I go to your country, and the custom is for women to wear a head scarf or long skirt I will happily wear it to adhere to your customs because I am a guest in your country. But if you are coming to my country, then I expect you to adhere to my customs. My customs are celebrating Halloween and thanksgiving as these are American holidays. And I say Merry Christmas, happy hanukkah, and happy holidays. People are way too offended over trivial stuff these days. No one is making fun of you by wearing a witch costume if you are Wiccan. Rather, they are saying I like and appreciate this. That is why I am fine with someone dressing up as a Hasidic Jew or a priest for Halloween too.

I agree with everything but the last sentence - but I have issues with the "Call Me Caitlin" costumes too. Dressing as a fairy princess or favorite cartoon character is fun. Making fun of someone because of their beliefs / dress code / gender identity is not ok.

As an American Jew, I dressed up for Halloween. IMO it's a secular holiday. And hello, CHOCOLATE! CANDY! What kid doesn't love that? My daughters dress up every year, too. It's fun.

But I'm glad that there are "Holiday" or "Winter" parties in December. We live in NY, and people celebrate all kinds of holidays here. Acknowledging all of them is a way for ALL students to feel included.
