Re: North Bellmore parents....IMPORTANT

I am full time working mom and a lifelong resident of North Bellmore.

There is no way I want to see the Princeton Plan adopted. There are so many other places to cut from our budget...even with closing Gunther. My children are zoned for Gunther and I am ok with it closing. Plain and simple - we don't need that school to be open. It's a drain on our resources and it has been proven that all the children zoned for Gunther can be re zoned to be absorbed between two other schools.

The problem with our district has always been our top heavy administration. For the above poster who clarified that we have 1 Superintendent....yes, you are correct.

You just failed to mention the other THREE high paying admin positions right underneath him

Assistant Superintendent
Assistant to the Superintendent
Deputy Superintendent

The removal of any of these positions is not part of the current proposed plans. It's an insult to me as a tax payer and a parent. I am willing to give to keep the quality of education at a high standard...it's a shame my administration isn't willing to do the same.

I think there are a lot of other issues with North Bellmore. Moving to the Princeton plan is not the only problem here. Even with moving to the Princeton plan, there is still a ridiculous amount of money that they will have to cut in the budget. h That would mean making some really big cuts. They have 5 superintendents in North Bellmore alone. This is an elementary district...why would you ever need that many superintendents?? My district which is probably 5 times as big has that many!!! The real question is where are they going to get the rest of the money they need??? Cutting teachers and increasing class size?!?!! Because it doesn't look like they are touching Superintendents and that is where it really should come from!! Students are going to be affected in big ways and that is a real tragedy. My district made cuts last year and they restructured administration (letting go of 5 assistant principals, a director) as well as teachers, reduced the support staff (guidance and social work, psychologist) and cut many, many programs. This has had a very negative impact on the district. Students are not getting the quality education they once had. Kindergarten classes are up to 29 with no aides, and all others are almost as high and getting higher every day as kids register late. It affects EVERY program... educational, sports, mental health, discipline, as well as teachers lives who will have no jobs. From what I understand, many teachers and aides are from North Bellmore and/or the surrounding areas. This will also affect your community and the fact that people will also be out of jobs, not being able to support thier families, pay mortgages, etc, making North Bellmore a very different place to live and go to school. We luckily will not be affected in this plan, but I fear for what North Bellmore will be like if this plan goes through. It is very sad.

Actually, we only have one superintendent but we do pay taxes towards a separate high school district that is shared between all merrick and bellmore residents...this costs a fortune and merging some districts could be a consideration on a grander scale...but that is unlikely.

Re: North Bellmore parents....IMPORTANT

Crashing here, but as a N. Bellmore resident, who is praying to be a parent one day, and who is also a school psychologist, I am not in support of the Princeton Plan. I think that for child's emotional development, particularly a sense of security and self-esteem, it is so important that he or she has the continuity of being educated in the same school during the early years. Being comfortable in a community helps children live up his/her social and educational potential. Being in my field, I tend to think of the students who have difficulty adjusting to change, the ones with learning disabilities or anxiety, or with more intense special needs, such as autism. For them, the Princeton Plan would be a nightmare, as it would take a good part of the first year for such a child to adapt to the routine and structure of his/her school, and then once he/she feels secure, it's time for another transition.

I was happy to buy a house in N. Bellmore instead of the Bellmore district because this model was not in place. I hope that by the time I have children in elementary school (zoned for Martin Ave.), it is still a traditional model.

I live in CT and my district follows the Princeton model. The plan works very well for my district and children. However, we are a small district with one K-2, one 3-5, one 6-8 and one high school. I don't see these stats changing in the near future. I have not experienced any of the negative points you posted. I understand your passion to protect your children. However this model can work well and my district is proof. I hope you are able to get a positive resolution.

My failure to mention "the other THREE high paying admin positions" was not intentional. I was clarifying information for a previous poster who stated that North
Bellmore had 5 Superintendents.

Re: North Bellmore parents....IMPORTANT

As someone who was a long time member of the NB community (I grew up and went to the schools) and am currently a seasoned teacher in the NB school district, I think it is critical that parents and community members come out in numbers to the next CEEO meeting. I was at the first meeting and was saddened at the week response which consisted of a few parents and mainly teachers from the district. By coming out in numbers hopefully the committee will see how important this is to all of the families that will be affected by this. Many teachers share the same concerns about how this will affect the children and meet their academic and emotional needs. And obviously the concern also rests in the loss of teaching positions. We all share the same feelings that instead of eliminating teachers they should be looking to other alternatives instead, such as the elimination of administrative positions or even the option of merging all of the component districts. Teachers are the frontline in education and the ones who work directly with the children....I just don't see how cutting teachers benefits children. I already have an enormous class with over 25 children...The option 3 plan they proposed would only save a mere $1.5 million, which isn't even enough to cover the deficit of $1.8 on the low side. They state that they would protect class sizes through this Princeton Plan, but I just don't see how this is possible. Instead we'll all have enormous classes, a significant cut in program spending, spending per child and to educational resources that would benefit the children too. This is JMO, but as someone that can see this from both sides as a community member and a staff member of NB I feel that there is no good that can come from this plan that has not been thought out thoroughly. Hope to see you all on the 6th at Saw Mill Road 7pm. Please stand up and speak your opinions!!!

FYI - North Bellmore has 1 Superintendent.

Actually they have four (not 5 as I previously stated..sorry)

Mr. Arnold Goldstiein---Superintendent
Mrs. Carol Eskew---Deputy Superintendent
Dr. Marylyn Johnson--Asst Superintendent
and Mrs. Toni Ann Cincotta---Asst Superintendent for busisness

Whatever you want to call them (Superintendent, Deputy or Assistant...they are still Superintendents making top salaries.)

I think the bigger issue is when our children's teachers post in public forums with spelling errors. Is this how you teach our children?

Re: North Bellmore parents....IMPORTANT

My dd is in a Princeton district and I really love it. I see her classmates as her community and not the individual buildings.

I also think that moving in this way mitigates a lot of agnst of bringing all the different elementary kids into the Junior Highs. I know when I was growing up so many kids went through heck because friends were dropped like hot potatoes once everyone was together.

Like a pp stated I also love the early childhood center. In our district we have pre-k and k in one school, 1-2, 3-6, 7-9, then 10-12.

The entire early childhood center is just so small child focused it is complexity comforting to the little ones. No big kids to be intimidated by.

I know change is scary but I think as one who had been brought up in a regular district i actually like Princeton better for my kid.

IMHO

Oh wow! I would think LIF is a safe forum to share our opinions. Obviously NOT! I'm so sorry to see that instead of responding to the message from my post if you disagreed, you instead felt the need to attack the minor oversight of a spelling error that I made. Sheer ignorance. I know I am an excellent educator and don't feel I need to prove this to you, someone who obviously has nothing better to do with their time.
Thank you to the rest of you who commented in my defense. It's a shame how some people act on here.

As for the PP who spoke out Bellmore's plan working...This is something that has been discussed within our district because of the close proximity. The biggest difference between Bellmore and North Bellmore is the sizes of the districts. Many people feel that it has been successful in Bellmore because it is half the size of North Bellmore with only 3 schools. We would have 5 which could make matters far more complicated. Either way, I'm curious to see what happens at this next meeting.

Really. Have the balls to not post under a fake name if you are going to jump down someone's throat who really had some valid points. This is what you have to contribute? And you took the time to make up a fake name to contribute this gem? It's clear she was posting from a mobile device.
