I have to agree. I still think it was excessive and the situation could have played differently for all involved. I think there needed to be some accountability somewhere.Chat Icon

Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!

Agree or not agree with the verdict, this family acted with class and grace. I feel terrible for them because no matter what the verdict, they still lost a family member.

cops DO abuse their power

I absolutely agree!!! Not every cop is perfect. It's a difficult job and they have to make difficult decisions.

But when it comes to abusing power, I dont know that this is the kind of situation where they can be accused of that. They had to react in a split second and make a decision to kill, or in their opinion or the way they felt, be killed. Cops who abuse their power, IMO, have to make a conscious decision to do so such as drinking and driving. I am almost 100% sure these cops didnt wake up that morning and hope to be put in this situation so they could fire their guns 51 times and kill someone.

To be totally honest, I kind of find it disheartening that people are clapping and jumping up and down about this. How sad is that? An unarmed man lost his life and we are applauding this....

I agree with you 100%. I am sure no one wakes up and says "I plan to shoot an unarmed guy today"

It is just a tragedy all around Chat Icon

Im tired of anyone in any profession taking advantage of a power. Which is what I feel they did and Im glad they were tried...Im sad at the outcome....

I'm sorry you feel this way. I think if your husband was a cop you would feel differently.

I understand that your DH is a cop so your opinion may be "biased" but sometimes, cops DO abuse their power. Sad but true - not saying it was necessarily in this case.Chat Icon

I was going to write the same thing. There are bad cops who abuse their power. I don't think most cops are like this, but some are. And there should be accountability for them. ESPECIALLY, since they are way so many people distrust cops. And lets be honest, most people distrust the cops for the few bad ones out of thousands of good ones.

To me, the profession of being a police bring dishonor on the profession need to be accountable for their actions.

I'm upset about this verdict. Cop or not they did something wrong and they should suffer the consequences. What makes them any different from anyone else? Sad this is so sad.

I think those that are doing so are happy at the outcome of the trial that innocent people (IMO) were set free not that someone was killed.

I don't think that's why people are clapping...

It's an awful situation, but I think people feel that they cops did what they felt they had to do to protect themselves at that split second..

I could be wrong but i dont think that anyone is applauding Sean Bell's death. What people are applauding is the fact the even more lives will not be ruined by this horrific event.

ETA: what stinks is that already some people in the crowd are starting to get a little agitated. they are showing one guy who is walking back and forth trying to entice the crowd and he's actually screaming in the face of cops who are standing in a line in front of the courthouse.....inches from the faces of the cops. so freaking disrespectful.

Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!

I think that at the end of the day, no one won. The family of Sean Bell will still feel that loss, day in and day out, and regardless of being acquitted, those officers will never forget that day or the entire ordeal that they have faced. It's something that they will ALL have to live with forever.

I pray that they all find peace somehow.

I see your point...it just rubbed me the wrong way....I, we, will never know what actually happened. I am glad that there has been no further violence....I DO appreciate how hard it is to be a cop and the sacrifices they make on a daily basis

Not exactly....cops are taught to shoot a "Central mass" -- the whole "wound" thing is something for tv. in real life---they shoot central mass...because you never want to give someone a chance to shoot back...the officer's safety is #1 for them in training.

i know some people might think "oh why can't they shoot the leg or arm" well in a split second....you don't want to take that risk. its about incapacitating the person.

i agree as well. i was actually quite shocked that they were found not guilty on ALL charges. at the end of the day, an unarmed man is dead. they should have been found guilty for something.

The judge ruled based on the law, you have to respect that.

I did not follow the case closely, but just hope that tonight and thru the next couple of days, everything remains peaceful. Chat Icon

I think they are trained that if they shoot they shoot to stop, and that means incapacitating them.

Ah..now I understand - thanks so much for clarifying...

Is there a call of judgement that has to be made - ie: how many shots are fired?

I just feel there's a difference between shooting to kill and shooting to protect yourself (a cop.)

My husband's auxilary...and it scares me to death that he has the same uniform and has no way of protecting himself....I have many friends in the force and they share accounts on a daily basis - getting batteries thrown at them from rooftops...Cops are seen as targets...and it's horrible that our society has become this monster....

However, we're still human beings and I think shooting to KILL is excessive.
