I dont understand why anyone would think that these cops were in so much harm that they had to ALL fire so many shots. The victims did not have guns did they? Chat Icon

This statement has not been thought out properly.....
It's very easy to sit at our desks and say the officers were not in harm's way.....very easy.
It's also easy to say there were too many shots fired.
These officers weren't casually firing their guns at random targets, they were in a FIGHT FOR THEIR LIFE SITUATION and those shots were fired in a matter of SECONDS.
Just because someone doesn't have a gun does not in any way mean they aren't threatening.
A moving vehicle can do lots of damage....
And if I WERE in that situation, you bet your sweet coolie I would fire as many times as necessary to save my life.

To be totally honest, I kind of find it disheartening that people are clapping and jumping up and down about this. How sad is that? An unarmed man lost his life and we are applauding this....

Chat Icon

It's disgusting in my opinion.
I won't even put into words what I am feeling now.

No one is applauding that anyone died.

People are applauding that police officers, who risk their lives to protect YOU and your family and all of us, are not going to be punished for a lifetime for simply trying to protect others and even themselves (nevermind that their lives are affected regardless of not receiving jailtime).

No one is clapping b/c someone died at all. Chat Icon

Just for the record, I KNOW that no one is applauding the fact that he died. I think that there should be SOME form of reprucussions (sp) for what happened. Only time will tell if this will happen

And ONCE AGAIN, for the record, I applaud the job that cops do on a daily basis but they need to be held accountable for their actions, if not criminally, then civilly

I do not think this situation calls for Chat Icon or Chat Icon AT ALL IMHO

I was just going by what you said, about

"an unarmed man lost his life and we are applauding this".

It did sound to me from this statement that you believed people are actually happy an unarmed man was killed and I was addressing that. But if that wasn't what actually you meant, then ok. I was taking that statement literally the way you wrote it.

But just b/c someone doesn't have a gun doesn't mean the vehicle they are ramming into another vehicle/person isn't a deadly weapon. What exactly is it then?

I know quite a few cops and they are good guys. They work hard to protect. Some are following in their father's footsteps. I know one that is going to be working tonight and I just Chat Icon that all our cops are safe

NOBODY is applauding/happy for a loss of life. I think people may be happy for the cops as they are being backed by the law. They are there to protect us/law and therefore the law should be there to protect them, if the evidence shows that there is no just cause to convict them. I'm sure the cops are never going to be the same again.

That is why
1) I don't envy POfficers at all, wouldn't want their job
2) wish my family wasn't on the job

B/c it's a lose-lose situation most times for the police IMO.

Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!

I think the most important words that that judge wrote were right in the second paragraph.

"This trial was a hardship.
But, it was not a competition."

It's turning into a competition on this thread.

Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!

I have to say that I am a bit surprised, but I do agree with the decsion. It is VERY difficult to prove someone guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt and that was impossible to do in this case.

Of course it's a tragedy on all fronts, the lives of those involved will never be the same. I hope that everyone will be able to keep the peace and not make this worse than it already is. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!

These are three VERY important statements the judge made when reading the verdict:

Reference was made earlier to the credibility of witnesses. the court has foundthat the people's ability to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt was affected by a combination of the following factors: the prosecution witnesses' prior inconsistent statements, inconsistencies in testimony among prosecution witnesses, the renunciation of prior statements, criminal convictions, the interest
of some witnesses in the outcome of the case, the demeanor on the witness
stand of other witnesses and the motive witnesses may have had to lie and the effect it had on the truthfulness of a witness's testimony. These factors played a significant part in the people's ability to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt and had the effect of eviscerating the credibility of those prosecution witnesses. and, at times, the testimony just didn't make sense.

The Altima, which was driven by MR.. Bell, sped away from its parked position, struck Defendant Isnora and collided head on with the police van that had entered Liverpool Street. The Altima then went into reverse, backed up on to the sidewalk, struck a gate and then went forward and to the right, striking the police van again. as this was happening, Defendant Isnora -- who testified in the grand jury --observed Mr.. Guzman, the front passenger, move his body as if he were
reaching for a weapon. Defendant Isnora yelled, "Gun" and fired.

With respect to counts 4 and 5, Trent Benefield, whose credibility was seriously impeached, testified that he was shot while running down Liverpool Street. Forensic evidence demonstrated otherwise. Thus, although the justification defense would not have applied to that aspect of counts 4 and 5, it was not proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

After just these 3 paragraphs, I dont understand how anyone could find it hard to believe anyone thinks the officers should have been found guilty. They couldnt even keep their own stories straight.

Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!

Unfortunately in cases like this, people form opinions based on emotion not on facts. Thats why the judge is the best person to rule on the case, not any of us.

When you read the judges verdict and how he describes the unreliability of the witnesses statements and how they kept changing and contradicting each other - that to me says that if they couldn't get their 'stories' straight - they must've been lying about something. The facts are the facts.

But i guarantee you that noone will blame any of the witnesses for messing the case up, noone will say anything to those guys about it and it will continue to be thought of as a case where the cops 'got off' and justice wasn't served.

I tried to reserve judgement myself on the whole thing because i didn't know all the facts, but after reading the judges statement, i think he came to the only conclusion that he could within the confines of the law. Not Guilty.

Still doesn't mean it wasn't a tragedy all around, i just wish it wasn't as much of a circus.

My thoughts exactly. I have already heard some not so happy people respond . I think repercussions may be on the horizon regardless of if you support or abhor the judges ruling.

There is no justice when lives are lost. Something went terribly wrong. So no clapping from me.

I suspect more cases like this may happen though considering the 16 year olds (young cops) I see carrying guns now. Plus the low salaries of new cops. I see a very sad future.

I think what we need to accept, understand, and realize is that sometimes when things are THAT split second and decisions must be made, that tragedies CAN occur that are SAD and AWFUL they are NOT CRIMES.

AND, I feel we need to give our police officers the BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT when they are in the line of duty.

I'm sorry, but until each one of us is ready to put our lives on the line every DAY, leaving our spouses, parents, children at home with the potential realilty that you may NEVER see them again....NO.

very well said. i said it after the shooting and i'll say it again. until you are ready and willing to walk a mile in my, or any cop's shoes, don't dare judge us.
too many people sit on their high horse and judge what should have and could have been done, what THEY would have done... but it isn't cops judging other cops, it's civilians judging cops. you don't do what we do, you aren't trained how we are trained. you watch and listen and read the news and believe what is put out there, because it is all you know. but it's only half of the story. you have no clue.
Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon <---- this is NOT applause for the death of sean bell. i feel for his family. i work in far rockaway, where nicole bell and guzman both live. i had interaction with the 2 of them today. i'm a cop, but it doesn't mean i am cold hearted. i understand that those involved and close with sean bell have had their heart ripped out repeatedly for the last year and a half. i truly am sorry for the pain they feel and for their loss. however, i AM applauding the aquital of these police officers... who did not walk out of their house that night, with an unregistered gun they bought of the street, with an intent to commit murder that night. they, were doing their job, putting their lives on the line, just as they did every night, dealing with people who do carry guns or have intent to commit murder. i'm not saying sean bell or the others were those people. but neither were the cops, and they shouldn't be treated as such. THEY were in fear for their lives and acted in good faith, IN THE LINE OF DUTY. what were sean bell and the others doing? were they acting in good faith when they tried to kill the officers with the car? i don't know what anyone was thinking in those moments that night, but i do know that no one in their right mind tries to run over a police officer... or anyone else for that matter. as many have said, this is a tragedy all around. sean bell's family aren't the only ones who have had their hearts ripped out... how do you think those detectives feel? or their families? they have to live with what happened that night, forever. the tragedy that occured, the fear they felt, their names being tarnished, their families being threatened, their careers ruined. all in an instant. and for what? our big paychecks? ha. nypd officers don't do what we do for the money... or to win a polularity contest. i can't pay my bills and each day at work, i am cursed at, spit at, fought with, disrespected over and over and over again. we do what we do, because we love it and it's a passion within us. those detectives did not mean for any of this to happen. their was no intent behind this tragedy. putting those cops in jail wouldn't have brought sean bell back to his family and friends. all it would have done is taught police officers, yet again, that no one stands behind them - and think about what will happen before you think of your life. more of us would get killed and hurt everyday because we'd be too scared to do our jobs. it's not that no reprocussions are being faced. they are being faced every day by those officers, who stood criminal trial for a year and a half, and now have to face departmental and civil trials. that's not enough for anyone to be satisfied? dh is a cop too... and he gets so scared of making one mistake, the department not backing him and him/us losing everything. i always tell him, just act in good faith and it will be okay. in a way, i'm right... because that prevailed in the judges decision and i applaud that man for his decision Chat Icon but it still scares the crap out of me and saddens me that there is still more for those officers to face. some of you know me... what would have happened if it were ME in those detectives shoes? would i all of a sudden be considered a murderer? would i belong in prison like the person who killed some innocent lady as a gang initiation? each and every one of you want the cops to serve and protect you, but you're the first ones to judge us when we do our job. THAT'S disheartening. until you've been there, don't judge.

I am new here at LIF and I first want to say that I applaud all of YOU for the way this thread reads!!!! I have been on other boards where a topic like this would get ugly real fast so BRAVO for the spiritied..intelligent discussion.

I am not going to say much because I am very closely connected professionally with this case. I do want to say that it is highly UNLIKELY despite what one poster said, that these cops will lose their pensions. They may be disciplined by NYPD and even lose their jobs but not their pensions (at least I hope not)

I think that justice WAS served in the verdict. Believe me when I tell you that this judge is a fair and smart man.

Finally, my DH is down in Kew and the 103 PCT as we speak so lets hope EVERYONE stays safe tonight and every night.
