Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!
Cop or not they did something wrong and they should suffer the consequences.
They will be held accountable most likely in civil trial as well as with the NYPD when they conduct their investigation. They will most likely lose their jobs and pension.
Yes, they didnt follow departmental procedures but they did NOT break any laws which is why they were found not guilty.

wouldn't they have to be reinstated, since they were found not guilty?? it seems like they should be able to go to back to work....
Right now I think they are still being payed but more than likely they will be brought up on dept. charges being they didnt follow protocol and procedures in some areas (which could happen to any police officer on the job). But just b/c they broke dept. procedures, doesnt mean they broke the law. Technically, they have not broken any law.
there are standards and rules for a reason.
Im tired of anyone in any profession taking advantage of a power. Which is what I feel they did and Im glad they were tried...Im sad at the outcome....
i dont think we have heard enough about what happened. In my opinon, there was probably a lot of chaos and maybe it does seem like a lot of unnecesaary bullets were fired, but on the other hand the police officers really feared for their lives.
Its hard to say when none of us were there

Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!
And I just want to add...some of the victims are not good people. They have records (violent records at that)...one even got into trouble during the trial.
DH worked in Far Rockaway for 7 years which is where these guys are from. One of the cops from that precinct sat at many of the proceedings b/c he is the community affairs officer there. He told DH sometime ago the trial was a joke. The victims were cursing on the stand, couldnt get their stories straight, were contradicting their own stories and each others, on top of using racial slurs such as the "n" word.
This judge has tried cops in the past on various charges. He is also not an elected judge. His decision was based on the facts presented to him at trial....not b/c of political reasons.

It is just a tragedy all around
THIS is what I agree with.
It's certainly NOT over for these officers.

You're absolutely right! My point is that most people don't put themselves in situations where they would be face to face with cops or be put in a position to be shot. Most people's actions dont put them in this position either.

Well that's not what you said, You just said that the victims weren't such good people. Which in my opionion has no relevance on whether or not they are in fact victims.

cops DO abuse their power
I absolutely agree!!! Not every cop is perfect. It's a difficult job and they have to make difficult decisions.
But when it comes to abusing power, I dont know that this is the kind of situation where they can be accused of that. They had to react in a split second and make a decision to kill, or in their opinion or the way they felt, be killed. Cops who abuse their power, IMO, have to make a conscious decision to do so such as drinking and driving. I am almost 100% sure these cops didnt wake up that morning and hope to be put in this situation so they could fire their guns 51 times and kill someone.
I thought police are trained to shoot to NOT KILL....
I think it is the opposite-shoot TO KILL

Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!
i thought the officer that shot the most times would have been charged with something, the other officers did not fire that many times, i believe it has been said he had to stop and reload which gives you a split second to reassess, but i am not a police officer
ultimately it is not over for the officers and the Bell family lost a family member
for all involved

Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!
Tradgedy all around......All I know is we all werent there and who knows if everyone knows the real stories, If someone is coming at me with a gun, all i would think about would be to protect myself..(regarding the victims) and on the other end if someone is trying to run over my fellow officer with a car I would want to protect them (regarding the police officers).....Its just sad

do they get to go back to work now?
Unfortunately, they most likely have lost their jobs, their pensions, everything. I feel sorry for their families, especially their children.
If I were them, I would never go back to work for the NYPD. With all the risks of being a cop today I just don't see how people do it. Not only are you risking your life every day, but then you also risk being brought up on criminal charges for doing your job. It really is a shame.
ITA.
My dad is a retired cop and ITA with this statement. He wanted my brother to become a cop and I was like, what are you nuts? You are lucky you made it to retirement without getting shot, killed, a lawsuit against you, etc.
Police have a very tough job that is underpaid and underappreciated IMO.

My brother is going into the academy in the summer and its breaking our hearts. Its the only thing he wants out of life and he is so passionate about..just like my dad and uncle were. I wish he would change his mind.

I'm upset about this verdict. Cop or not they did something wrong and they should suffer the consequences. What makes them any different from anyone else? Sad this is so sad.
If you look at the law, the way it is written, the burden of proof (beyond a reasonable doubt - which is extremely high) and the fact that the witnesses stories changed three times, as a criminal attorney I feel the Judge did the appropriate thing. Often times there are crimes, but that doesn't mean that someone is always held responsible. According to the evidence and the law they did not commit a crime. That is different from trying them in a "moral" court or a "street" court. The laws are very specific, which is why I think that judges should handle more trials b/c often times juries throw the law to the side and just convict/dismiss based on their feelings. Judge Cooperman is a highly respected judge and independent. he is not seeking reelection so he was the perfect judge for this case. He would be less likely to be swayed by public opinion. he would have no motive other than justice to come down with a verdict.

I think that at the end of the day, no one won. The family of Sean Bell will still feel that loss, day in and day out, and regardless of being acquitted, those officers will never forget that day or the entire ordeal that they have faced. It's something that they will ALL have to live with forever.
I pray that they all find peace somehow.
I couldn't have said it better myself.
I wasn't there that night- none of us were. We don't know what actually happened- maybe the cops were justified in shooting (although- I must admit that 50 shots are excessive) maybe they weren't. You can't tell who is being honest, who isn't.
Sad sad situation all around.

I heard this too. The judge made his decision based on the evidence, and if witnesses cannot get their story straight, it definitely shows reasonable doubt, which is what is needed to find a person not guilty. I just hope that there are not going to be any major repercussions. I already begged to stay home from work tonight -- he is NYPD, but he said that no one is allowed to do that. He is scared too...

i completely agree... i feel the same way with my husband.. he is underappreciated and is a scary thing.. i cannot wait till he retires.
I don't blame you. I admire you for being a policeman's wife. I saw what my mom went through all those years, and even us kids, always worrying if our dad came home late, etc.
Not easy to be a police officer or family member of a police officer. MOST police officers are doing their job the right way (most, not all of course but yes, MOST) and get nothing but backlash for doing their job and protecting themselves and others.
