Not worth it to work?

I was reading this article and the woman says that it was not worth it to bring home $18,000 year. This was after taxes.
Would you find this amount of money not worth it to work and in what circumstances?
I can see if I had to travel to work and buy work clothes all the time and never saw my children.
She was a teacher though so I am "assuming" she would get off earlier in the day (so she would have the evenings with her children and maybe late afternoons), holidays, summers, school vacations, etc.

http://money.cnn.com/2012/04/18/pf/moms-work/index.htm?hpt=hp_c3

The amount of money is about $350/week, not chump change, IMO.

Re: Not worth it to work?

If I was a teacher, the short hours would make it worth while. For any other job: NO!

18k would be enough for me. I "forfeited" a lot more than that but I WANTED to be home with my kids regardless- it's not like I only did it bc it made financial sense.

I also think school teachers do a lot of work at home like lesson planning etc.

I agree with it, if you are making $350 a week and have to pay for daycare as well you are bleeding money. However if my kids were old enough to be in school and I could be home in time to get them off the bus then I would work.

It depends on what is making it not worth it.

My friend was there - making $18K at a teaching job. A decade later, she makes more than me, has more job security,a union backing her, tremendous benefits & works at least 3/4 of the time less than I work.

Even in the private sector, if you're a little more than breakeven, you have to figure in learning a skillset, building a resume, 401K contributions, any increases you may see.

This is after taxes, daycare, retirement. She would clear about $350 week.

I mean I would think every little bit helps, but if she wants to spend more time with her kids versus working I could see why she wouldn't want to work.

Re: Not worth it to work?

DDs daycare costs $310 per week, so for me personally it wouldn't be worth it. I'd be working to put her in daycare. The extra $160 a month would cover our cable bill. Not worth it.

If I didn't have children to worry about, and was in a situation where I had no job and needed one, $18k would be great! Better than nothing.

Re: Not worth it to work?

The woman is forfeiting 18k but money was so tight that her husband has to take a 2nd job...

It's somewhat unfair for the husband that she gets to spend that much more time with the family while he's out working 2 jobs to make ends meet.

18k might seem like chump change but not so if you really need the money.

No, she is clearing $18,000 AFTER daycare. This is the money she would bring home to do whatever she needed to do with bill, savings, spendiing.

LOL clearly nobody reads posts!

In my current situation, $1400/mo would pay my mortgage (tax excl) do yes that would be worth it to me.

However if we had a comfortsble cushion with just DH salary then it wouldn't be enough to make me go to work.

I read the post, not the article, and that's not stated in the post itself. No need to get snippy.

AFTER daycare, that amount would pay most of our bills, so yes, it would be worth it for me. It's not much, but I like to work so it would be a win-win for me.

I agree. I also think it depends on the situation. 18K per year would cover nearly our entire mortgage and taxes, so for me, I think it would be worth it.

i have to say if i had 18,000 AFTER i paid for kinds in daycare i would 1000% work...it isnt even a thought in my mind! DH and i are ttc now, and if i end up coming home with 10,000 a year it is still worth it imo.

I agree, if I made that AFTER daycare/child care expenses, I would absolutely work

Re: Not worth it to work?

At this point in my life I'm not sure how to answer this bc we don't have children yet. I don't know if any amount of money will be worth taking time away from my kids. Unless WE NEEDED it to survive - that's a different story.

Both of my parents worked growing up. More then FT and I think it affected me. So personally, I don't WANT to work once we have kids. I want to be home for them.

This is why I started a home business and am trying to keep it going so there will still be extra income for savings.

Re: Not worth it to work?

If it meant the difference between DH needing to take a second job or not, I think I'd still be working. That's a quality of life thing right there, and $18K isn't pennies...

Re: Not worth it to work?

If it was needed yes I would do that. If I was on unemployment after getting laid off and I was pursuing a role where I was getting paid what is normal in my field, no.

Re: Not worth it to work?

IMO, and i don't want to get flamed for saying this...but after reading this article, i feel the woman in the story was quite selfish.

Now, granted, i don't know this woman or her financial situation, however, being a teacher, you get home early and have all the same holidays off that your children have.

I'm not going to go so far as to say that everyone has friends/ family to rely on...however, there are so many support groups that are around that can watch your kid for like an hour or two. Call a friend, family member, aneyone to watch our child for an hour, tops to give you enough time to get out of work and pick up your child.

Most kids go to pre pre-K now so obviously this will work only if the child is already in school.

But its not fair that the hubsand has to work a second job to help make ends meet while her extra $30K a year would definately help.

that's what I don't get

if you husband makes $150K and you are sitting pretty- ok- I agree you don't need $18K- but if the poor guy has to get a second job.....

Re: Not worth it to work?

I don't know. I guess it depends on the circumstances. I haven't walked a mile in her and her husband's shoes so I guess I can't really judge..

For me.. 18K would not cover our mortgage. My husband is out of work most of the year these days so I need a job that will (at the very least) cover our basic expenses. And - because we don't know when/if he will be called back I have to make enough to cover camp/after care and possibly before care in case he gets called.

Seriously. It's a no brainer. Before daycare and taxes is one thing, but c'mon. She just doesn't want to work.
