NPR: Nikon D40x HELP
My camera is not working...and I don't know why!
On the lens, there is a setting for A or M, which I believe is auto or manual. If it is set to A, it will not take any pictures. If I change it to M, it will take a picture, but I don't know how to set all the other manually settings, so of course they are all blurry. On the dial, I have it set to "auto".
It was working fine, before DH took it Can anyone help me?

Re: NPR: Nikon D40x HELP
I would check to see that the lense is on properly and that the battery is not dead (as the ap said ). If that doesn't work, I'm clueless

Battery is 100% charged. Memory card is in correctly. I have removed and put the lens back on 3x already!

Re: NPR: Nikon D40x HELP
A is for aperature - M is the manual setting.
To use these you would have to know about f-stops and aperature - these control light.
I use both and I'll be honest, it confuses me
For now, just put it back on auto and you should be ok........I think

It will only take pictures if it's on M and I don't know how to use any of the settings other than "auto"

Re: NPR: Nikon D40x HELP
what kind of lens is on it?
If it's the 18-55mm lens it will work on A (which is for Automatic... you should be able to change the apeture on the camera body)
If you have the 70-300mm or another telephoto lens, then it ONLY works in manual.

Re: NPR: Nikon D40x HELP
It's the 18-55mm lens that came with the camera. It is set to "A", but nothing happens and I cannot take any pictures.

perhaps changes were made accidentlly and you may need to reset the system. turn the camera on, press the menu button and on the custom setting menu click reset.
or...hold down the info and zoom in/out buttons simutalenously.
try both of those

another option is to go to the menu.. to the custom setting menu and click on FOCUS.
make sure it is on AF-C, AF-S or AF-A... any of them should work)

I'm sorry but this is false - every lens works on auto. I have this lens and always shoot on auto with it.
I would bring your camera in.....

Re: NPR: Nikon D40x HELP
On the lens itself, there is a switch for Autofocus. Make sure that is on the right setting too.

Where on the lens?
I already called Nikon...they think it's the auto sensor on the lens because it works on the Manual setting. However, I don't have another lense to test this out. There are no autorized Nikon dealers near by (only 1 in NYC and 1 in Cherry Hill, NJ). They suggessted I send it in to Nikon. I have tried calling several camera repair shops in my area, but none of them do repairs on digital cameras
DH wanted to get a new/better lens for the camers and he suggests we buy the new lens and see if that is the problem before sending it in. Of course, he wants the 18-200 MM lens and I really don't want to spend $700 on a new lens right now. Grrrrrr

It might as well not work for me on manual...because I don't know how to get a good pic on manual

Re: NPR: Nikon D40x HELP
Ok on DX lenses there is an "A" and an "M"
A = Autofocus M = Manual
STRICTLY for the lens' focusing mechanism
The camera must also be set to focus the same way, either manual or auto.
They both must be set to the same thing for the lens to work.
I'm not sure where it is on the D40x but on the D50 it's very close to where the lens mounts.
If the D40 doesn't have as a dial or an in camera setting, then I hate to say it but your autofocus might be damaged on that lens
ETA: Nevermind - I just found out that the D40x doesn't have built-in autofocus so you won't have that dial. Have you tried calling Cameta Camera in Amityville?

On the lens, it is set to "A". On the camera it is set to "auto", nothing happens when you press the shutter button. The flash pops up, but no pictures. If I switch the lens to "M", it will snap a picture...but I don't know enough about all the other settings to get that picture to be clear and in focus, which is why I always use auto!
I'm in NJ, so a store in Amityville won't help me.

Oh sorry - didn't remember you were in Jersey.
Ok so both are set to auto. Well, when the lens is set to manual that does not mean you have to shoot manual, that just means you have to focus manually. You can still shoot on Auto as a programmed mode. So if you turn the focus ring on the lens you CAN take pictures that won't be blurry. But something is still wrong.
Do you have any other lenses you can test with?

No, I don't have any other lenses. I was able to push the AE-L/AF-L button next to the view finder and the picture snapped...but it is still all blurry. I have tried to play with these settings, but unless I hold down that button, nothing happens. Even if I hold down that button, the pictures are all blurry. I have reset them all back to the default factory settings

OMG-this is bizarre. YOu and I are having the same problem with our cameras. Mine is doing the same thing. My camera when I push the shutter the flash pops up then nothing. sometimes I get one shot off but then nothing.
