Number of words at 13 months
In a spinoff to my post on walking, I was reading on BabyCenter's July 08 boards that some people's DC have 60 words they listed broccoli, tire, all done, mickey mouse....etc...
My DD says Mama, Dada, Hi and Yeah...I don't really like to compare, but 50 words

Re: Number of words at 13 months
My son didn't have any consistent words at that point. Mama, dada and baba (bottle) were used when he felt like it. He had a verbal explosion around 15-16 months and gained a bunch of words. By 18 months he was stringing 2-3 words together.

Re: Number of words at 13 months
Seamus has sort of had a word explosion as of late
He will be 14 months on the 22nd
He says mama, dad,hi, bye, papa, nana, TT (my sister Teresa) cat, dog, frog (that is what he calls his lovey),blue, red, ball, all done, more (his new favorite word), up,baba, car, moo, ice pop , elmo and a few others.
He is no where near 60 words though!!
He goes to daycare and I think he got most of the words from there. They go over animals, animal sounds etc everyday with flash cards so I think that really helps him a lot.

Re: Number of words at 13 months
Brody will be 1 in 2 weeks. The words that he says clearly are:
Mama Dada baba Pop (my father)
dog cat ball book
he can baaahh like a sheep and he can sign "more"
At 1, Ava said a lot more words.
As far as what you read, don't believe most of it...

Re: Number of words at 13 months
Ryan had between 50-60 words between 13-14 months and now at 17 months has a huge vocabulary. But I don't think that's the norm at all. My friend's son is 18 months and has a handful of words - maybe 15, but he's certainly not behind.

same with Landon. He has 25+ words at 1 year and I lost count soon after that. I am so amazed by his vocabulary at 15 months. But every kid is different. My nephew didn't say anything at all until he turned 2.

Re: Number of words at 13 months
At 13 mts he really didn't have a lot. Maybe 20, really. He said things like mama, dada, baba, bye bye (which he said dye dye) and yeah (dah) and no. By 15 mts he was saying a little more. But it wasn't until after 2 he had the big explosion and he must have 100's of words now!

Re: Number of words at 13 months
DS is 14 months - if he has 5 words then that's a lot.
He knows what things are, so I know he understands. I try not to think about the amount other kids have, because then I know I'd make myself crazy.

Re: Number of words at 13 months
At 13 months Kaydyn had two words (Dada and Please).
She has had an explosion since (she is 19 months) and probably says about 30 words or so and strings some 2-3 words together.

Re: Number of words at 13 months
DS is 14 1/2 months....he can (only when he FEELS like it ) say Mama & Dada.
But he knows the signs for: 1.more
2.all done
3. made up his own for good boy (when he does something like putting things away or stops when we tell him no...he pats his chest!!! so funny!)
So yeah....not anywhere close to 50 words....but he can communicate a few things to me so I am happy!!

Same. I find my DS is very much an observer...he watches and hten when he does things its with ease. Same with crawling, walking. He almost never practiced (never crawled backwards or rocked on all 4s, didnt cruise for long) then one day he was off crawling and same with walking.
Talking was similar, he wasnt a repeater, and he had a handful of words at 13 months. Then around 18 months HOLY COW, it just took off, with 2-3 word sentences and answering questions correctly etc. Now at 20 months he says and repeats everything. He amazes me at how much he can say and understand. 3-4 months ago he was barely talking, now he can count 1-11, sing twinkle twinkle all by himself, and knows some of his ABCs...
Dont worry I think your DD is right on track~!

Re: Number of words at 13 months
Abby can say: Mama Dada Kiss Uh-oh Up Down
Her receptive language, however far surpasses her ability to articulate and as well it should. She can follow certain 1-2 word directives such as:
"stop" "blow kisses" "Clap hands" "Hug"
and she knows what to do when you ask her "how big is the baby?" I even change the words to make them sound like I am asking the same thing and she will not put her hands up. She knows specific words.
RANT TIME:
It is pretty apparent that there is a range of amount of words that is appropriate for a child at this age to have. I think we all have to keep in mind that at 12 months, our DC's are still babies and though language continues emerge, if one child has 30 words and another has less, it is not of great concern and would probably not render a child as language delayed. I work with enough children with speech and language delays to recognize this.
The same could be said for any milestone. Now that Abby is one year old, the first question people ask me is if she is walking and they almost gasp when I say she is not. She is not delayed. She is within normal range for her age and if I am not concerned, then they should not be either. Then they proceed to tell me that their 99th percentile 30 pound 6 month old can recite Hamlet's soliloquy while walking backwards on a balance beam.
Im sorry for the rant, but I know posts like these can make a parent feel as if their children's development could be delayed and I would hate to see someone feel bad.
By the way, Abby hates Shakespeare.

Re: Number of words at 13 months
DS is 17 months and only says "that" (when he points to something he wants.) The ped said it was OK and that he wouldn't be concerned until the 2yr. mark.

Re: Number of words at 13 months
Both my DC barely said a word at 1. DS is is now 15 months and he only says "mama" "dada" "uh-o" & "Nana" (for his big sis Hannah)
He makes sounds for "hi", "bye" and "thank you" but he's not really pronouncing the word if you KWIM?
He signs "more" and "all done" and shakes his head yes / no.
Jack understands everything I say and can communicate in other ways. I wouldn't worry about it. My DD didn't say more than 5 words until she was 16 months. At 2 she was saying 3 word sentences "daddy car work" and by 26 months she was speaking full clear sentences.

Re: Number of words at 13 months
My granddaughter Jaci just turned 1 on August 27th. She says: Momma (me), Mommy (her mom), dad, daddy, no, really, Avery (my grandson's name); map (picked up from watching Dora), twinkle, twinkle, baby, bobo (her paci), hi, bye, yeah, uncle, she calls my other daughter titi. She is not walking yet, but I think she will be walking by the end of this month. I wouldn't worry about it, every child is different. My oldest daughter could speak in sentences by 20 months, but my youngest daughter didn't start speaking in sentences until she was 22 months.

Re: Number of words at 13 months
Sydnie just turned 1 and understands way more than she can say. For instance, she can point to her ears, nose and belly when asked but only says about 5 words. She'll mimic what I say but only says about 5 words spontaneously. Like others have said, 12-18 months is usually the time frame for them to really start talking so it's too soon to compare or be concerned

Re: Number of words at 13 months
At that age, DS only verbally said mama and dada.
But he did have a bunch of signs that he was communicating to us.
milk more eat hat cracker cookie please thank you
He really didn't have a word explosion verbally until between 17-18 months.
