NYC DOE Veteran's Day
Why are NYC schools open tomorrow on Veteran's Day observed? Absolutely disgraceful.

Re: NYC DOE Veteran's Day
I don't think it's observed Friday everywhere. I work in a place that follows federal holidays and I'm working tomorrow.

Re: NYC DOE Veteran's Day
Veteran's Day falls on Saturday I thought?
I know my bank is open tomorrow. I'll be working and most people I know still have to work. I was hoping for a 3 day weekend

I was surprised too. All NYC catholic schools are closed, as are all public and private on Long Island.

NYC DOE Veteran's Day
If it falls on a Saturday you do not have to observed it on the Friday but if it falls on the Sunday you must observe it on the Monday
This happened in 2005 and another year before that maybe 1996

NYC DOE Veteran's Day
I may be in the minority but I'm a teacher (not DOE) and see no reason to close schools if the actual holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday. Lot of places are open tomorrow (banks, businesses, etc.)

I’m a DOE teacher and daughter of a Veteran and I’m outraged that we aren’t observing the holiday.

Because Veteran's Day is November 11th and only officially observed on another date if it falls on a Sunday.

I was surprised to see this. Since alternate side parking is canceled because they are observing Veterans Day today.

I don't understand how a day off from school = observing the day. Our schools are open (and we have a large number of military families and a base near us). Yesterday my son's school had a long program where they invited veterans to come in to be honored. There were also assignments across the grades that were related to thanking our veterans for their service. To me, this is honoring Veteran's day, not a day off from school where the only thing the kids (and likely most school employees too) celebrate is the fact that they don't have school. Financial institutions and many other establishments are open today, I don't see why schools should be any different.

NYC DOE Veteran's Day
Because the Holiday is actually tomorrow, Saturday, when there is no school. If it falls on a Sunday, then it is observed Monday.

Re: NYC DOE Veteran's Day
The DOE sometimes gets the Friday (when the day is on a Saturday) and sometimes doesn't. It depends on the calendar.
This year, Lunar New Year is not during a break so they needed to give that day. Something had to give. If Veteran's Day was during the week I assume we'd be going further into June.
I was annoyed at first but it's a quiet day at my school. Lots of cutting esp. with the weather lol.

NYC DOE Veteran's Day
On the ORIGINAL DOE calendar schools were closed, they revised bc I think what a PP said about Lunar New year--except the DOE already has more days than we HAVE to have by law so they could've technically closed.

Re: NYC DOE Veteran's Day
I actually think that it is more likely that a child will actually observe the significance of Veteran's Day if they are in school today because it is likely the teachers will speak about it. I can almost guarantee that if they were not in school today they would not even give it a thought about why they aren't in school

So true. If you want to honor and observe it- do so tomorrow- on the actual holiday.

I agree. If DS didn't have school today, he would be having a playdate or making plans with friends. I'm sure the teachers are talking about it.

Exactly.
The holiday is tomorrow. What needs to be done today. Which is not the holiday
And yes Catholic schools are closed, however, they were NOT closed on Tuesday, when public schools were

NYC DOE Veteran's Day
I actually don't understand why schools would close today. I don't understand why they're closed on election day. Are kids voting?
I don't know a single adult who is off from work on either election day or Veteran's day. I guess some teachers are off, but that's it.
I'm so grateful that my DD's daycare is open on most of these holidays because I don't know what I would do otherwise.

My DD"s school is a polling place so they can't have the students in the school on election day when the school is wide open to the public. But Her teachers had a superintendent conference that day- they were not off.
